  1. My HP server gen 8 runing XPEnology DSM6.1.5 has been running well for the past 2 years, but now have an issue with the loss of my biggest drive 4tb due to bad sector issue.  Yes I have lost some data which I can live with. All drives are in raid 1 which is OK for me.  I have removed the bad drive and replaced it with a spare 500gb drive until I get a new 4tb drive, the drive has been formatted and appears in storage manager / HDD and shows it is working ok but has not initialized next to it and does not appear in storage manager / volume.

I am surprised that I am having this issue when I had no problem setting up the system a few years back, can anyone help, and point me where I am going wrong.

Any suggestions would be very welcome.

Look in; Control Panel > File Services > SMB > Advanced Settings (button)

You can set SMB versions, WINS, master browser etc.

I found SMB under control panel - programs and features - turn window features on or off - SMB 1.0cifs file sharing support, is this the correct file?  There is a lot of information on this subject so I tried turning off SMBv1 and adjusting DSM to accept  SMBv3, still no luck, so have put it back to how it was. I believe the adjustments to SMBv3 is more secure. Still no luck with resolving this problem.

check the versions of windows running on the 3 machines, possible that an update has changes the network discovery/browsing features. You could try resetting them as well. Another test is to ping the server IP and dns name, both should resolve but if only the ip does, then there is a dns/name resolution issue on the PC

Have checked all my PC's and they are all on the same version, also have done the ping test on both host and ip, all OK.

Any other suggestions to this very frustrating problem, all would be welcome.

  4. Ok, have changed the name on both the DSM and my PC, and stopped the computer browser, but the problem is still there. If I click on network, the server appears in media devices and other.  I have tried 2 other computers and the server is on the network and works fine, so the problem is on my PC. As already stated I have reinstalled windows 10 but kept apps and files. Anyone got any other suggestions I could try?

  5. For some reason, my DSM server is no longer visible in file explorer under network. If I use my laptop it is visible and can access some folders. I have even re-loaded windows 10, and for a short while it appeared, but when I next logged on it was missing. If I click on This PC there are some DSM media apps visible but no sign of my DSM server or folders.

Does anyone have any ideas on how to resolve this problem?

Can you post dome screen shots.

The screenshot does not show the problem, but I will try to get a better view.  But if you go into control panel/admin/permissions there is a list of all my folders, the majority are ticked read/write the only folder that is greyed out is the photo folder, and that is the folder of all my uploaded albums are in. so it appears not even admin does not have access.

Have you assigned the correct permissions in photo station, this can be done per album or in Settings/User Accounts

I think so, I have no problem requesting upload from my DSM, either from my PC or mobile, but trying upload directly from my mobile I get the above message. I have noticed the photo file was greyed out on one of the permission settings, so suspect this could be the issue, but how to rectify is a mystery.

  8. I have recently upgraded my hardware and trying to get back to the same packages as before. I am having problems with Photo Station if I take a photo on my phone when I try and upload it to photo station I get the following message " No albums available for uploads. Please make sure your account has permission to upload to this album"  I have gone through settings and have ticked all the right boxes including user - advance and ticked enable user home service.  Anyone had any experience with this package or had this problem, any help would be appreciated.

  9. It makes no difference which browser I use, I keep getting a warning message when I log in. " This connection is not secure. Logins entered here could be compromised"  I have tried using the DSM connector app, Ip address and my domain. When I click on further information it refers to the DSM certificate but could be something unrelated.  This is a new issue for me which I have never had before, previous set up prior to upgrading my hardware was fine.

Anyone had this problem, who could help with a fix?

i tried to explain both option (keeping new installed system and updating old system) - looks like i was not successful  with it, maybe i should have split it better in to scenarios?

Your post was a great help to me, the difference between my old set up and new was minimal, the important aspect was that it was still 6.1, which it was.  All the hard drive. apart from one are fine, so a little more work to get that sorted and I will be up and running.

    Thanks again

to know how the system works helps a lot

on a dsm system every disk contains a 2 GB system and a 2.4 GB swap partition all 2 GB partitions over all disks are in a raid1 mdadm raidset, same goes for the 2.4 GB partitions, the space behind that is free to use for user created raids

if you set up a new system with 2 new disks and install dsm and after this you insert 3 older disks the older system and swap contain different system and the only way is to overwrite the old system this step of creating/overwriting this 2 partitions ans making them part of the existing raid1 is called initialize, the user created raid partitions behind system/swap will remain untouched by dsm and if dsm recognises it as raids it should show up, so if the 3 added disks in the old system where a raid5 set of 3 disks the data of that raid should show up

if you want the system of that 3 disks "updated" you should insert them alone and boot with the new loader, it should be shown as migrateable in synology assistant, if you upgrade to the newer dsm and also update the plugins there is a good chance to keep the configuration (at least part of it)

the plugin configuration is stored on a user created partition (dsm will not install plugins if there is no data partitions created)

Appreciate your help, decided to bite the bullet and went for the online image update, and you were correct it did save some of my settings, but from my original setup, not the new one. Still it did not take me long to get it up and running, experienced gain from my second setup helped me through.

  12. Have just tried to add a couple of Hard Drive from my earlier XPEnology set up to find that DSM wants to download a new image, I naively thought it would accept the drives or incorporate them without a new firmware. My question is after spending a lot of time setting up a new bare metal system, will I have to start from scratch, or will DSM save my settings, or would it be better to format the drives.

Any guidance would be very much appreciated.

  13. Trying to get my new server access outside the home network. Have activated host name and all working using port 5500, as 5000 already being used.  But i am getting a connection not secure error, which is stopping me access with my mobile DS photo app. I have tried using port 5001 which the port was made open, without success.

What am I doing wrong, any ideas?

  14. I have followed the tutorial, and got to the stage where I connected using (find.synology.com)  But there was no option to install, I created an account and the system is working fine from just the boot up disk. But clearly this is not correct as the pat file has not been used. Anyone else had this problem, and is there away to resolve.

    any guidance would be great.
