USB drives for storage (?)

I have an old MiniX https://www.amazon.co.uk/MINIX-Mini-HD-PC-D2550/dp/B00CPNTH54 and a bunch of usb (500Gb to 1TB) drives lying around.

Before I decide to do the setup, would anyone please confirm:

Can xpenology be "forced" to use usb drives for storage?

Has anyone done a similar thing or are there any workarounds?
