System instability , memory issue?

Question

Posted

Hello I recently build my first diy nas and installed DSM 7.2.1 using latest arc loader.

CPU: Intel N100

Memory: Crucial DDR5 16GB CT16G48C40S5

The system always boot fine but may only work smoothly for a short period of time ,sometime hours with the longest being 4 days. Then it would become unresponsive where i cannot access the 5000/5001 port or any of the docker service i am running, it will just keep loading with white screen. But strangely, I can see traffic in my wireguard app installed on my phone connected to WG-easy docker container running with the wireguard spk on my nas. After hard reboot the nas will work fine again. Sometime it may also run into some docker container error which require reboot to restart the container . the funny thing is, it wont soft reboot or shut down once the problem appear, it will stuck in the "system is getting ready" page for more than a hour. Again hard shut down is required.

I ran the memory test  for 3 times where the first two  pass without error but the third time return with "memtest failed err = 1". What is err = 1? I see most people encounter err =4 or 6. Is it confirmed that the memory is faulty even tho it pass the first 2 run?

Thanks!

I'm having exactly the same issues as you. I have Intel(R) Core(TM) i3-10105T CPU @ 3.00GHz. DS918+. 16 GB memory (8GB 2x. But different speeds). Although the system uses the lower speed RAM I thought it would not be an issue. SSH works and SMB as well. It is only quickconnect and port 5000/5001. This led me to suspect the issue with Synology software rather than a system hardware issue. I'm running Docker too. Trying to mitigate the issue, I just converted one of the SSDs from storage to SSD cache for volume1 trying to see if it would make a difference. I was searching for a memory test so I came across this post but I'm not sure where the problem is.

I sometimes try to watch Plex but it becomes offline and after 20-30 minutes it comes back. Based on what I was reading somewhere that if there is an issue with memory, Synology will use swap and that might cause it. Not a 100% sure but that's the most logical explanation. Let me try to do a memory test on my system and get back to you.

I tested each module and both together. Pass.

My best guess it is a software issue at this point. I'll do dmesg next time this happens and get the logs.

I was the poster, for me, it was the memory stick. I also used memtest86 multiple time , it all pass except one time failed with single error and i thought it was just soft error. Then i boot the nas with window on a usb and use OCCT to do memory stress test which reveal hundreds of error. You may want to try it too.

Can you provide steps on how to do that?
