How MIGRATE (and upgrade) from DSM6.x to DSM7.x with a Big Storage NAS --> method without backup.

Recommended Posts

For baremetal it was my method with APRL/DS3622 on 10 disks (20TB) working firstly with JunLoader under DS3617.

Preparation

1)    If your old SYNO Xpeno working OK, should be easy to migrate in a new DSM if you have your data in different Volumes and Groups . For reduce risks prepare volumes matching HDD, with Group/Volumes . Will be better if you have NAS Stored with 1Volume as small Group, 2Volume as middle Group and 3Volume as BigGroup

2)    Not necessary make a backup of 20tb!. Only Clone your old USB Loader 6.2.x (balena, ccloner) works perfect for that. Use properly USB stick (not card), and Unplug all Storage disks.

3)    Now, with your XpenoServer empty and your BigData stored unplugged, put only 1 new small HDD/SSD into for a new DSM 7.1 installation. (You can use (or not) new ID and password for this DSM creation. If you finish successful your new DSM7.1 by APRL by FabioB, and IP works perfectly, make a fast configuration and testing if DSM working ok. Now shutdown your DSM7.1.

Next step add your storage DISKs, and DSM will understand this process automatically as MIGRATION; but make it once at time, one volume at time. (The idea is to go connecting HDDs by Volumes).

Under turn off NAS.

4)    Add/connect/plug your first smaller Volume (that its was working Ok under DSM6.x, pls. don’t take out the testing HD/SSD that you used for create this new DSM7.1).

TURN ON your NAS/DSM7 and

5)    Upon booting, Assistant Synology will detect that there was a MIGRATION. There was no other option to follow, it asks you to “install the DSM7.1 .pat AGAIN”.-and Now you Jump into the Void! --> DO IT , in fact , will be not a new full installation, only sync MIGRATION with the .pat File that you made this APRL)

and

6)    in a couple minutes it “asked for permissions” to “MIGRATE” with options to get old files and settings -Voila!!!! It will ask if you keep test data from 7.1 (empty) or if you want to get-keep the old 6.2; CHOOSE THE OLD from 6.2 and you'll get back the same DSM name, ID and password, static IP that you were using before.

If this doesn't work, you can go back, put your old loader back in, plug in all your drives, and have lost nothing. If this works Ok you have a nice Migratrion sucessfull, shutdown again. Plug next Volume, and repeat the process. When finish it, you can delete and take out the HD who use for create DSM7. And now can enjoy a MIGRATION without backup.

((I hope this step-by-step tutorial helps someone as much as they have helped me in this forum to have a very good NAS))
