zylstra Posted November 29, 2018 Share #1 Posted November 29, 2018 I recently purchased Synology's DS218+ and found that it is too loud for my tastes. I would like to build a quiet, fanless, diskless NAS that is able to use Synology's DSM. I was thinking of simply buying the new QNAP HS-453DX, installing SSDs, and calling it a day, but I would like to use DSM instead of QTS (for no reason, as of yet). I will be using my NAS for streaming music to Sonos, recording two surveillance cameras, and backing up my PC, and maybe serving some websites. Ease of installation is of extreme importance to me (but apparently not as important as complete silence : / ). What hardware do you recommend for a fanless, diskless NAS to run DSM with XPEnology? Logic Supply? ZOTAC? ... Apparently I don't quite understand performance requirements of a NAS vs. a server or PC. Why is the DS218+ so much more expensive than computers with similar CPUs and RAM?
