  1. Not that I know of. Try importing in ws12 jun's loader directly ( the alpha for 6.1). After importing do not start the vm, edit the settings to your preferences. Add a drive (on the scsi controller) for install save the settings and export. You might need to convert it before export, make it hw 10 or 9.

As a general note, I use my router admin ui to determine what ip is allocated to the vm. If I get on the pc today I'll try to make one for hw version 9.

We can setup a team viewer session if you want, pm me and I'll try to help.

  2. The hw 10 vm should work in esxi 5.5. I can't test but that's why I chose hw version 10 and not 11 or 12, many use the old 5.5.

In ws12 I can import and run hw10 version with no issues, didn't try the hw13 one.

    What hardware are you using?

  3. Has anyone got a working ESXi version for DSM 6.1 / details of how to deploy the bootloarder by Jun for vmware?

    viewtopic.php?p=92170#p92170

Use the one in my last post if you are lazy

nothing diferent about the deployment method, the same as 6.0. Get it and test stuff on it, I don't have the time to play with all the apps.

  4. You have to deploy from ovf

I got it up and running Thank god....

What vm did you deployed ? I ask because we have 3 in this topic. If it was mine I'll try to find out what was the issue and correct it.

    Edit:

Tested mine and there are issues when using web-ui to deploy the vm; that is strange because the export was done using the webui.

Using vsphere 6 the deploy works fine; but to edit the vm you have to use the web-ui (after deploy)

    Edit 2:

Here is one with hw version 10; deploy from webui works for me, I tested this one. It's the same vm, same user/pass.

  5. Clean OP, add link to Pokanskiman's tutorial and add download mirror.

DMS 6.1 uses updated kernel (3.10.102).

The kernel sources for 6.0.2 (3.10.77) has not been released yet so don't hope anything from Syno before months.

Like before no sources = no loader

    jun's v1.01 loader CAN'T support DSM 6.1 so DO NOT UPGRADE !

I've rebased the vendor changes on 3.10.77 to 3.10.102, seems still works.

Thanks; imported the vm on esxi 6.5 and installed 6.1 wit the .pat file from synology; so far all ok, didn't test further.

  6. Thanks for the detailed instruction in the pdf  I didn't tested the vm but everything should be ok. I recommend posting a separate link with only the pdf.

Here is an working DSM 6.1 vm, with Jun's alpha loader for 6.1

    https://mega.nz/#!dko1GTiL!8_lIQsUPbkPq ... iKepS2Nfe4

    user- admin

    pass- 123456

it is hw version 13, so only for esxi 6.5

I removed the serial port and one of the usb ports (it had two) and changed the controller from parallel to paravirtual before installing; 2cpu, 2gb ram, 16gb drive added for install (thick). It is up and running on an hp gen8 microserver, didn't had the time to test package functionality.

Edit: Deploy the vm using the old vsphere app; for some reason it gives some error from web-ui. After deployment you can use the web-ui to edit the vm settings, vsphere can't do that.

  7. As of yet, I have been UNABLE to get any of these suggested DSM 6 solutions working in any way, on ESXi 5.5, 6, or 6.5. I have no issues with the 5x versions though.

I always end up with some variation of "Failed to power on virtual machine DSM 6. Unsupported or invalid disk type 2 for 'scsi0:0'. Ensure that the disk has been imported. Click here for more details. "

Has anyone developed a bootable ISO for install yet?

I can provide a working 6.0.x OVA that I have remotely deployed to 6/6.5 ESXi, PM me for info.

I am a new user and can't PM. Would you mind sharing it with me via another method? Thanks in advance!

    Here you go: https://mega.nz/#!Vk40FCDT!r2ertz7Eyoeh ... W2p1GLgzfs

    just add drives and install

    details about it here:

Did you tried this : ?

    viewtopic.php?f=2&t=26952

  9. sorry for the late reply

    For the first attempt:

that screen is normal, you should be able to use (in browser) find.synology.com and continue with the install. If that fails to find the server, try the assistant app; if that also fails try to find all the ip's allocated in your lan. Do that with an app or go in your router administration page for a dhcp client list, you should find in there everything in your lan.

You don't need to choose the esxi option at boot, the loader starts with that by default (on my image), and with jun's you only need to select it one time, it always remembers the last option used.

    For the second method :

the zip from jun's (1.01) is here https://mega.nz/#F!18kB1BTB!1ft3N5Hnrcnqsneu0aQUkA

that is the link posted in his topic first post

it contains : ovf, vmx, synoboot image and synoboot vmdk

    -you edit his vmx

-put all the files on a folder in the datastore (use the edited vmx not the original one)

-from the esxi web client you register an vm usig the edited vmx

-at first boot choose the esxi option

If you need any help send me a pm, we can start a teamviewer session and I'll try to see what is wrong.

  10. I made some posts a while ago with this image for an easy install on Esxi; from time to time someone has issues with the installation, so here is a topic only for Esxi installs, hoping that this will make the info easier to access.

    First :

    - This is Jun's loader 1.01 (thanks), I just changed the vm version and some settings in it.

    - The instructions for editing the grub are also from other users in this forum, can't remember their names now but many thanks to them too, for helping with the linux commands; if I manage to find their posts again I will add their names here.

    hw10-xpeno6-v1.01:

    https://mega.nz/#!Vk40FCDT!r2ertz7Eyoeh ... W2p1GLgzfs

hw10-xpeno6.1 - this is with 1.02alpha loader (thanks jun); dsm already installed, use this user/pass :admin/123456

    https://mega.nz/#!UpQgiYRS!yFQmPmuAqcdX ... sNVSWnKW70

Some users have problems with the 6.1 version, it can't get an ip; for me and others all is ok. Change mac/sn in grub.cfg if possible.

This is a hw version 10 vm, it should work on Esxi 5.5, 6.0 and 6.5; I used this ovf successfully on Esxi 6.0 and 6.5, mostly on hp gen8 microservers.

All you need to do after import is to add your drives and edit ram/cpu to your needs, then start the vm and continue with the install process. It will start with the vmware boot option automatically, and after the install you will not see the 50mb boot drive.

If you want to modify the grub cfg after install you need to set the boot drive as dependent or persistent before edit. But I see no need for abusing synology services, a free dns is all you need.

Here is how you can edit grub after dsm6 install (make sure the boot drive is NOT non-persistent for this to work):

    SSH into dsm and type

    echo 1 > /proc/sys/kernel/syno_install_flag

    mount /dev/synoboot1 /mnt

    /mnt/grub/grub.cfg

    umount /mnt

or for using winscp to edit the file with notepad++ (vi editor is not that hard, but...):

    1. Login using putty or any other ssh client with administrator account (usually "admin")

    2. You will be asked for a password. Enter the one for the administrator account

    3. You will get a command prompt

    4. Enter: sudo su -

    5. You will be asked for a password. Enter again the one for the administrator account

    6. You will get a command prompt root@...

    7. Enter command: synouser --setpw root your_new_root_password

For "your_new_root_password" please use the desired password for root account.

    Nou you can do

    SSH into dsm and type

    echo 1 > /proc/sys/kernel/syno_install_flag

    mount /dev/synoboot1 /mnt

login using winscp (user root and the password you set before) an go to /mnt/grub/ and edit grub.cfg Save and close editor when finished.

Get back to the ssh sesion and do

    umount /mnt

Shut down dsm normally (not from esxi cli or webui) and edit the vm setting - change the boot drive back to non-persistent.

Here is another way to install on Esxi using the same loader (thanks vrm42):

"Jun's loader works fine with esx 6.0.

    I did the following:

    - open .vmx file with a text editor and change hw version from 12 to 11

    - upload the files from the .zip to the datastore

    - don't deploy .ovf, instead, just open server IP in web browser and login to the esx web page

    - click on datastore and select register vm, select the .vmx file

    - now you can return to vsphere client, edit your vm as you like

    - I needed to remove nic and re-add a new one, don't forget to add an hdd

    - open console, start vm, select vmware install from boot menu (keep pressing down arrow from the start, loader is very fast)

    - open find.synology.com within your browser and install your nas (you need a dhcp server within the same ip segment)

    - after that you can update to update-9 directly"

Here is a link to Jun's post with this loader, with all the info for it:

    viewtopic.php?f=2&t=20216

    Edit - SHR on dsm6:

edit synoinfo.conf located in /etc.defaults/synoinfo. conf

    comment out / delete

    support raid group = "yes"

    then add

    support_syno_hybrid_raid = "yes"

  11. Is there any workaround to get the ESXI (6.0) install to work from scratch?

    See my post here

    viewtopic.php?p=82392#p82392

It doesn't use this tool but it's easy to deploy and use.

    Hi Koroziv,

I already tried your image while reading this topic and just tried it again. I always get "Failed to format the disk. (35)" error. I added different types of (virtual) HDDs SCSI/IDE and different controller types but I get the same error. I used latest pat from Synology.

having same issue, how did you resolv this?

i am guessing the PAT install tries to install on bootimage and not on the new added virtual hard disk / rdm ...

Again, this is addressed in 2.3. Will not provide any help to 2.2 as it is hard broke.

I have no idea what is happening; I used that for numerous installs on hp gen8 microserver (not all mine) and worked every single time with no issues. Here is an image with the boot drive and the instal drive, a 16 gb virtula disk (vmdk) created on the datastore; the rest of my drives are RDM's.

I just loaded esxi again just to verify it one more time.

It work's without any issues. I'm using a hp gen8 microserver. Others with gen8 and esxi also got it working with ease. What is your hardware?

If you want start a TeamViewer session and send me a pm with the details, I'll join and try to see what is happening.

  13. To hide the boot drive in xpeno vm (esxi) go to vm settings and set the boot drive to non-persistent. Do this only after you finished to edit the grub.cfg if needed.

For bare-metal xpeno you need to have the corect vid and pid for your usb stick in the grub.cfg.

  14. When upgrading it will keep the ext4 that you used in dsm 5.2. If you want to change to btrfs you will lose your data so backup first.

If you want to test/play with btrfs clear one volume (move data to another volume), remove the free volume and create a new one instead with btrfs.

Btrfs is working with Jun's loader and I hope it will work on the 2.3 version of this tool. With my vm for esxi btrfs works because it's Jun's loader in it, I just made a vm that is easier to deploy.

Also the grub editing stuff is from other users in here, I just used it successfully and share it.

  15. ty! and this is needed in order to change the serial / mac in a file?

If you want to change mac/sn you have to edit the grub.cfg

Thanks to koroziv!!it Works changing grub that way. But I have some doubts... I'm running esxi 6.0U2 in my HP Proliant microserver Gen8 and I've a hardware raid controller PCIe card with 3 x 4Tb disks (RAID 5). When I'm adding disk to the dsm6, I don't know how to do the best, right now I'm presenting disks 3x1Tb in JBOD,btrfs in order to increase when neccesary adding another one 1Tb... I've tested to create only one volume with 3Tb and increase space later in the VM, but it doesn't work dinamically or I'm not doing right....any other idea to do this better way?? thanks

I can't share any advice on something I never tried, sorry.

I never used another controller on my hp, don't have one; my esxi days are done for now, running xpeno bare-metal. Maybe in the future I'll get back on esxi again, it's a waste of resources to run only xpeno on a xeon cpu and 16gb ram...

I used basic for my drives, each drive - one volume with its own shared folders. The xpeno vm only had a 16 gb partition on the datastore (ssd), the storage drives (4) - RDM to xpeno vm

Not saying it's the best way to do it, but this was my setup. I could remove the drives at any time and use them on my pc for example (ntfs) without losing any data. Or I could add them to another vm (RDM) for storage. That was the best thing about esxi, I coul test new xpeno and other OS's and bring the storage to them without issues when needed.

  16.

Thank you very much for the infos!

Do you have problems with slow data transfers to the hard disks connected to the internal sata ports with esxi 6.5 on a hp microserver gen8? I know that with esxi 6.0 there is a workaround by using the older sata-driver from hp for esxi 5.5 but I don't know if this currently needed at esxi 6.5

    Btw:

Thanks to all devs and all members who brings life into upgrading xpenology to a newer version! It begins to get better and better.

My favorite solution is to stay at my current bare metal install at my gen 8 with VirtualBox on top but this is only possible with the sources. So I must look around for other solutions.

I only used esxi 6.5 (custom iso made by HP) for about a week, didn't noticed any issues in this time. However, on esxi 6 the problems with the slow transfer appeared mostly when I run 2 or more vm's on the same datastore. While on esxi 6.5 I only had one xpeno vm running full time with a few other (also xpeno) for testing, a lot of reboots... so I can't be sure if the problem is there or not

My advice is to use esxi 6.5 as it is for some time, and only if you have problems to downgrade the hpvsa driver to scsi-hpvsa-5.5.0-88OEM.550.0.0.1331820.x86_64.vib witch was the latest good one for esxi 6. A lot of good info on hp gen8 and esxi you can find here :

    http://homeservershow.com/forums/index. ... /88-gen-8/

  17. Here is how you can edit grub after dsm6 install (if using esxi make sure the boot drive is NOT non-persistent for this to work):

    1. Login using putty or any other ssh client with administrator account (usually "admin")

    6. You will get a command prompt root@...

    7. Enter command: synouser --setpw root your_new_root_password

For "your_new_root_password" please use the desired password for root account.

Nou you can SSH into dsm and type

    echo 1 > /proc/sys/kernel/syno_install_flag

    mount /dev/synoboot1 /mnt

start winscp and connect to your dsm (user root and the password you set before) an go to /mnt/grub/ and edit grub.cfg Save and close editor when finished.

Get back to the ssh sesion and do

    umount /mnt

It is easier to edit the cfg before install, in win10 just write on the usb stick (after writing it using winimage or rufus); for older windows you have to mount the image and edit the cfg before writing to usb stick. You can try to create a new usb and switch the one you have working on the current install to avoid using ssh, if it's not working just plug the old one in again.

For esxi users: use osfmount or vmware workstation to mount the vmdk boot image and edit the cfg.

  18. This is nuts... I have update 6 on baremetal with no issues

    dsm6u6.jpg

I have friends who use esxi and also updated without issues; give some details about the hardware you use, method and loader used, nobody can help if you don't give any details.
