  1. I've got a SuperMicro Superserver with a 1230v2, 32gb RAM, LSI SAS 2308 in IT Mode and 8x Hitachi 5K3000's, ATP USB SLC SSD for ESXi.

Xpenology does run natively on this box, but this machine is overkill. I want to virtualise everything with ESXi 5.1

I have SSD's on hardware RAID for datastore, but can't really find a nice elegant solution for Xpenology for my storage array, I have managed to make a VDI from the IMG, but not sure how to make a proper VMDK for ESXi.

I do hope more work continues for this as 4.2 would be amazing as a VM with VT-d passthrough SAS controller

  2. @freddiep Have you tried fixing WOL by following the replies from viewtopic.php?f=2&t=665 ?

Yes. That works brilliantly to get the MAC correctly programmed. I can get the server to start with a WOL packet from my server. The issue is the shutdown or startup (not sure when the BIOS is being written..from my tests I believe it's only happening as it closes the server down soft). So I can issue the shutdown from the GUI, watch it turn off, then send the WOL packet to start it up. What I notice is that the date then is reset to 2009 in the system and NTP fails to work anymore (messing with it sometimes locks the server up). SSH in to the server shows me the incorrect system date. So sometimes a bootup with wrong date, sometimes an invalid BIOS profile, and sometimes a wiped BIOS... Mostly the latter two. hwclock doesn't link to the device, so I'm not sure where it's doing the write to BIOS configuration. I was curious if anyone had noticed it, and maybe..just maybe modded the system to not mess with it. I have to admit I only noticed this when I configured WOL, so I am not sure if that did not cause this. I have noticed a lot of posts on the topic about shutdown causing BIOS reset, but again..can't tell if they were doing WOL hacks first or not.

My BIOS is also reset but fortunately for me, I have no issues with the whole system. Probably because of my Gigabyte MB and its dual BIOS?

Most Gigabyte will do that, but just wait and it will recover from previous settings if you leave it and do not press buttons on re-boot!

  3. Mac OSX does the same thing on some PC's, but that's due to power management/sleep. Wonder if it's linked somehow too, might be worth looking on hackintosh forums. Maybe there is a kernel switch or grub command you can use.

  4. synology's opensource package for kernel 2.6.32 contains the sources for synobios kernel module... not directly compatible with 3.2.30 and no support for bromolow but handy anyway!

What is the issue with Bromolow boards (I have one) Also does anyone know what chipset the real Synology uses? I know the CPU is Sandybridge but I cannot find out what chipset they are based on.

  5. Hello,

I have some PCI-E card who are supported by XPEnology :

    - Asrock 2 x SATA3, PCI-E 1X, chipset by Marvell

    - One generic card 2 x SATA2, PCI-E 1X, chipset SIL3132, SATA port multiplier

    - Asus U3S6 2 x SATA3, 2 x USB3, PCI-E 4X, chipset SATA by Marvell

    - Another generic card 2 x SATA2, PCI-E 1X, chipset JMB363

    MsX

    Cheers for the reply,

    Is this under build 3202?

  6. Some Gigabyte boards do the same, but they will boot of the last known good BIOS config.

Have you tried to flash newer BIOS? is there a write protect jumper on board or BIOS setting?

  7. My nas's wattage can be seen in my signature. I never measured it in idle, standby, etc. I was too lazy.

By the way, why would you need a beast like yours to hold some TBs as a nas?

Which beast are you referring to? The AMD or the SuperMicro Super Server?

  8. I'm running the DS3612xs_3202-Repack build, obviously like most energy efficiency is a concern, there seems to be no function within the Synology OS too see what CPU speed is reported or any energy saving methods.

Looking via the terminal running cat /proc/cpuinfo there is no power management listed and always displays the CPU as max Mhz,

I have tried an AMD FX 6300 and a Intel Xeon E3 1230V2

I'm trying to get my hands on a kill a watt type device but these seem pretty rare in the UK and only cheap devices exist.

Does any throttling go on via the Synology OS? i.e. PowerStep or AMD Cool and Quiet?

Looking at reviews of the DS3612xs the idle wattage is over 100watt! on a Sandybridge i3 (3200?) which seems high to me, do they not use any form of throttling at kernel level?

  9. All,

I'm running DS3612xs - DSM 4.2 build 3202 And it's absolutely perfect with the AMD 970 Chipset, I am using all 6x 6gbs SATA connections.

    As per this post: viewtopic.php?f=2&t=555&start=140#p3464

However my case has 1x hotswap bay on the front (Coolermaster Silencio 550) which I would like to use to take my drive to another house for back ups.

Can you recommend any cheap PCIe 1x SATA Cards or chipsets (Pref 6gbs) that are compatible with this build, don't need any more than 2x SATA Ports.

    Thank You

  10. This is a fantastic project, keep up the good work!

I wrote "TheBay" BIOS for HP Microserver series, to enable AHCI, but I have put that on hold at the moment till I get an N54L.

I found a perfect hardware combination for this version over the weekend and built a box running 4.2 an hour or so including assembly.

I can confirm the ASUS M5A97 LE R2.0 AMD AM3+ works perfectly and very cheap £55, it has 6x SATA 6gb/s, compatible Realtek NIC and even USB 3.0 support works perfectly!

    CPU I used AMD FX6-6300 6 Core (95w Tdp) £100

Also this board supports ECC Unregistered/Unbuffered RAM

Running 7x Hitachi 5K3000 2TB's and really happy with performance, I just added an Intel Based HP HP NC360T Dual Nic which I can confirm works perfectly!

I have also added a HP NC360T (Intel) Dual NIC (PCIe 4x) which is supported out of the box

This all works so well I am selling my SuperMicro Superserver with E3-1230v2 and 32gb RAM with LSI 9207i (LSI2308) and dual redundant PSU. I was using ZFS/Solaris but much prefer the Xpenology for home use.
