You can install the dsm on the ssd, that's how I did, but you still need the usb stick for booting.

hi folks,
i wanted to buy this mainboard :
ASRock J5005-ITX
THE NETWORK CARD IS Realtek RTL8111H
STORAGE CONTROLLER :
2 x SATA3 6.0 Gb/s Connectors, support NCQ, AHCI and Hot Plug
- 2 x SATA3 6.0 Gb/s Connectors by ASMedia ASM1061, support NCQ, AHCI and Hot Plug8 GIG RAM
1 SSD 128 as system drive
1 6tb wd red as nas drive (maybe later raid setup)
i wanted to use the 918+ pat file.
could anyone explain me, how to install the dsm setup onto the ssd without booting from a usb stick ?
or if this is not supported, WHY ? because of UEFI things ? or else..
how to install the software correctly ?
i understood the following :
i need a pat file. i need a usb stick to boot from all the time ?
1000 thanks to anyone who could describe me in short words, how to install dsm on that machine ?
regards
danni
J4105 user here. In order to boot, you have to have the usb stick, no way to avoid that as far as I know. I failed to load 918+ for the hardware (keep crashing), but 3617xs does work.

- Outcome of the update: SUCCESSFUL
- DSM version prior update: DSM 6.1.7-15284 Update 1
- Loader version and model: JUN'S LOADER v1.02b - DS3617xs
- Using custom extra.lzma: NO
- Installation type: BAREMETAL - Asrock J4105
- Additional comments: REBOOT REQUIRED; Domoticz seems to be unstable under some situation, not sure if re-installation would solve the stability issues.

I don't need payed service from Synology, I only want to work hw transcoding on my J5005...
Again, hw acceleration needs a valid s/n. If you want to use it, you can buy a cheap or used synology nas even it is not the same model. No one will share their vaild s/n to you.

Hi mate, I think you misunderstood. He said he was testing ds3517 with 6.2.
I was asking how he was doing this.
I am testing ds3517 with 6.17. In my case I found the 918 is not stable enough to boot with 6.17 DSM and my j4105 motherboard, however ds3517 seems to do pretty good jobs.

I just tried the DS918p 6.2-23739 Update 1 on a baremetal ASRock J3455-ITX using Jun's 1.03a2 loader and after the automatic reboot, the update experienced a kernel panic.
Can you try the ds3517xs firmware? I am using the j4105 cpu and the ds3517 seems to be more reliable than the 918 for this cpu.

the (hardware) transcoding is about GPU namely it' about unsing intel quick sync video
thats what a lot people here after, having a cheap cpu with gpu and beeing able to transcode on the fly for streaming
That's it! Thank you for clarifying! For a system with cpu only, is it useful to activate the HW transcoding function?

i think you will need a valid SN for the specific model you have installed
imho a 3615 sn will not work on a 918+ to activate transcoding
but i'm not sure, have not trieed it, my nas hardware does not support transcoding
The transcoding in the DSM is powered by CPU, right? What if I have a gpu installed, is it possible to use the gpu for transcoding? Just a crazy thought...

usually a sticker on the backside of the system, there should be synology, the modell S/N:, MAC address and maybe "Made in Taiwan"
Thanks 88! Any risk if there are two DSM running with the same s/n but different locations?

thanx for u reply
i use a SN from DDSM,and write it into zhe grub.cfg
the SN work well in DSM6.1.7(v1.02b+DSM_DS3617xs_15284.pat),so this SN still a fake?
i will check the SN and try to change it,thank you!
Dude, you need a valid s/n, which means 正版群晖序列号 in order to make it work. At lease for the current 6.2 system it is true.

transcoding will need a valid serial number for a 918+ in grub.cfg
if you used the fake one that is in there by default its not activating the hardware transcoding
maybe this will give you the information you need to check this
88, just to be clear, no matter what version the DSM is, we still need a valid s/n for transcoding, right?

If you would use Plex or Emby, something to stream Videos, the software can encode these Videos to make the needed Bandwidth smaller, and some Cpus are able to encode these with hardware, what speeds the encoding process up
2I cannot tell right now since I need to get the valid s/n from my 216 first...

if you use a valid serial number for 918+ and videostation then you can check with "top"
I do have a 216+II but not for my recent build. Where to find the s/n in my 216+ii?

Does Hardware-Acceleration work?
How to tell whether it works or not? I did not hear about that before.

j4105 here. I built it on last weekends. It runs DSM6.17 without any issues. Just follow the tutorial and done.
Welcome onboard bro.
