Seems now that I can only boot USB from within Bios?
better either get that Disk 7 out test/reformat/reinstall or replace it then click (repair) again?
Wonder if I just put Disk 9 in it's place?
-
Disk7 is now available to become a hot spare?
but is still shown as "System Partition Failed, Normal" in HDD/SSD
and System Health/Storage Manager wants to do a repair?
-
Further info Disk 7
Storage Manager / HDD/SSD :
System Partition Failed, Normal
Storage Manager / Logs :
Disk 7 Had 26 events in May/June 2021
13x I/O errors
9x An I/O error occurred with the hard drive
3x Trying to reconnect to disk
could this been a sata cable connection issue?

Hi
DS3615xs - DSM 6.1.7-15284 Update 3 with 8xHDD's in raid5 with HDD9 as spare
HDD7 totally disappeared from my system
as my PC case is hard to access I left HDD7 in situ & did a repair with HDD9 as hot spare
... took about 8 hours & all came up good
but on reboot a few days later HDD7 has re-appeared causing:
"! Attention - System is healthy.Failed to access the system partition. Please repair it by clicking the following link.(Repair)"
As the "System is healthy" & I don't know HDD7's reason for doing a Harry Houdini
.. if I Shut Down .. remove HDD7 .. & reboot will all be back to normal?

Storage Manage -> RAID Group -> DSM Help ( within my system)
````````````````````````````````````````````````````````````````````````````````````````````````````````````````````````
I used this as a guide to Expand
To expand the size of a RAID Group
You can expand the size of a RAID Group by replacing existing hard disks with ones of larger size or by adding hard disks.
Note:
To expand a RAID Group with 3 TB or larger disks, make sure your RAID Group was created using DSM 3.0 or later.
To expand a RAID Group by replacing existing hard disks with ones of larger size:
You can expand a RAID Group by replacing existing hard disks with ones of larger size in the following RAID types:
RAID 1
RAID 5
RAID 6
RAID 10
RAID F1
Associated volumes or iSCSI LUN on RAID Group for single volume or iSCSI LUN will be expanded automatically. Please follow the steps below:
Turn off your Synology NAS. You can skip this step if your model supports hot-swapping.
Replace one hard disk with another of larger size.
Turn on the Synology NAS and repair the RAID Group.
Repeat step 1 to 3 until all hard disks are replaced with ones of larger size.
The system will expand the RAID Group automatically.
Note:
All services of Storage Manager will be temporarily stopped during the expansion process.
You can only expand the hard disk when the RAID Group is in Normal status; otherwise it will cause data loss. If the RAID Group is in Degraded status, please repair it first.
To expand a RAID Group by adding hard disks:
This function is applicable with JBOD, RAID 5, RAID 6 and RAID F1 types of RAID. To do this:
Select the RAID Group you want to expand.
Click Manage.
Select Add Disk.
Follow the wizard to complete setup.
Note:
The RAID Group status must be Normal.
For RAID 5, RAID 6 and RAID F1 types of RAID Group, the hard disk size must be larger than the smallest disk in the RAID Group.
The status of the selected hard disk must be "Initialized" or "Not Initialized".
````````````````````````````````````````````````````````````````````````````````````````````````````````````````````````````````````````````````````````````````
So assumed I could use this guide to change Raid Type
To change the RAID type of a RAID Group
To change the RAID type of a RAID Group, there must be available hard disks installed on your Synology NAS. Currently, the following types of RAID change are supported:
Basic to RAID 1 or RAID 5
RAID 1 to RAID 5
RAID 5 to RAID 6
Add mirror disk to RAID 1
Please follow the steps below to change the RAID type of your RAID Group:
Select the RAID Group you want to change.
Click Manage.
Select Change RAID type.
Follow the wizard to complete the process.
Note:
A RAID Group's status must be Normal before its RAID type can be changed. Otherwise data loss will occur. If the RAID Group is in Degraded status, please repair it first.
To change a RAID Group's RAID type, enough hard disks must be installed on your Synology NAS, and the size of the new disk must be larger than the smallest disk in the RAID Group.
The status of the new disk must be "Initialized" or "Not Initialized".
The RAID type of a RAID Group with multiple RAID Arrays cannot be changed.

My Volume is Raid 5, it was at 81% usage - right now it's expanding from 7 to 8x 4TB hard drives (84%@50Hrs)
2 hours ago, IG-88 said:synology help also shows it as possible
the UI appeared to show that raid 5 -> raid 6 was just as easy as expanding .. but I assumed this would need raid hardware
9 hours ago, flyride said:it can technically be done via command line
I'm not command line nor technically savvy

Can I change from Raid 5 to Raid 6 without any major issues?
my system DS3615xs - DSM 6.1.7-15284 Update 3
hardware - i7 3770K/P8Z77-V pro (8 sata board)/8Gb ram with 1x LSI SAS 9201-8i
8x 4TB hard drives in raid 5 & 2x 250GB SSD's cache (at present 6 sata's go to MB & 4 sata's to LSI card)
I wanted to add an extra (9th) 4TB HDD for the extra parity, but I've read somewhere that raid 6 needs to run off hardware raid & whereas raid 5 can run off software raid ?

finally got the two 225 rpm fans (Hyperborea) up over 600 rpm by using bios, they exhaust top-back & back
but had to put a diode & a splitter to slow up the two front intake fans (Gentle Typhoon), this got them down to about 900 rpms
ambient is 21°C & HHD's 25°-27°C idle

swapping out the Q6600/GA-P35-DS3P/4 Gb ram for a very lightly used i7 3770K/P8Z77-V pro/8Gb ram
All went great .. the system is now a lot snappier
only problem is noisier fans that will either work at about 225 rpm or 1550 rpm and nothing inbetween .. I'll look for a manual controller

In the DSM's Control Panel / General / Thermal status .. it has always had a dot & normal highlighted in green,
and hovering the mouse over it always shows 40 °C/ 104 °F .. doesn't matter if the CPU is idle or busy
So is there any way to get any live or real temperature of the CPU etc?
and would it show or indicate anything if the CPU or MB etc got hot or overheated?

Thanks
I used "usbview.exe" from Windows Kits Debugger for the VID & PID
1- Did a image backup of my Kingston Data Traveller bootloader with Alex's "USB Image Tool"
2- Mounted image with "OSFMount"
3- Only edited the VID & PID in the grub.cfg file using "Notepad++"
4- Burnt image backup to new Samsung Fit Plus 3.1 with "Win32 Disk Imager"
Everything is working good
I'm now swapping out the Q6600/GA-P35-DS3P/4 Gb ram for a very lightly used i7 3770K/P8Z77-V pro/8Gb ram
the i5 4690/Asus Z97-K got taken by OMV

Thanks .. I'm running DS3615xs Jun 1.02b loader; DSM 6.1.7-15284 update 3
I've been using a Kingston Data Traveller 3.0 for a few years now and I just want to have my boot loader on a different USB stick
so I was just trying to work out how to or when to change the VID & PID ?

if you change the usb to a different type you would need to change the vid/pid in the grub.cfg (1st partition) to the new one's vid/pid
I did a image back up with Alex's "USB Image Tool" .. to but can't work out how to change the vid/pid in the grub. is this done after Win32DiskImager?
Also I couldn't do an image backup with Win32DiskImager?

For anyone researching this the answer to my questions is YES
I removed them from the M/B's sata
connected them in any old order through the LSi SAS 9201-8i card
They showed up fully working
-
Is it okay if I disconnect these hdd's from the M/B's sata & use the LSI SAS 9201-8i instead ?

I'm thinking slipping the drives out & into a newer set up ... in the same order 0,1,2,3
Using the LSI SAS 9201-8i, the original hard drive order "0,1,2,3" wouldn't be the same
is this going to work ?
-
If I put all my 4Tb raid drives on the LSI 9201-8i & left the 2 cache ssd's on the motherboard would I get faster read & writes?
Also how hot do these cards run at ? .. my infrared thermometer shows about 60°C on the heatsink on the underside of the card & about 48°C directly above it ?
I might have to reseat the heatsink with new .. would arctic silver do, or should I use a thermal adhesive pad ?
-
I didn't hit Ctrl C in time .. and it just loaded up showing LSI with the ssd that I connected on the way to login
appears to work perfectly .. the extra ssd shows up, etc 🙂
I don't need to hit Ctrl C on boot as it's a non-raid 9201-8i ?

Results might be a bit late but ..
the 2 Gigabyte sata connectors (GSATAII : 0 / 1) show up as disk 7 & disk 8
as for allocation, disk's 1 through to 8 can be used anywhere, I put 2x SSD's in raid 1 as cache in disk's 1 & 8
disk's 2 to 6 as raid 5 & disk 7 is vacant

power management / sleep problem with 918+ and to avoid this the driver used is lacking some important features like s.m.a.r.t. or showing the serial number of the drive
I'm staying with 3615xs so are these issues only with 918+ or with 3615xs as well ?
also I found an LSI SAS 9201-8i so would this also have the same issue as the 9211?
and if I get the 9201 would it be essential to update the TI mode firmware as it's already in TI mode?
Thank you
