  1. Hi al,

I have an issue with my HP ML350P GEN8 server which is quite a nice machine for virtualsation and usage as mass storage device based on its slot.

I want t use the raid controller as passtruth so tht Xpenology can manager my disks in raw mode also providing smart status etc.

I am using ESXI 6.5 and first enable HBA mode on the P420i controller (which means passtruth disk and disable raid), than i install june loader a vmware.

Adding additonal CPU's + the PCI card ass passtrtuth device. Immediatly when i start my VM the CPU Fans go up to 100% and dont go done when i shutdown the VM. Only solution is to reboot the entire machine.

Anyone else a clue or seen this problem ?

  2. Thank you Dutchman,

can you describe how you would do this?

    Thank you....

Basically you can just use the standard instruction of synology.

    https://www.synology.com/nl-nl/knowledgebase/DSM/help/DSM/FileBrowser/mountremotevolume

    Change to en-en for English

    So

    1) share folder on the qnap

    2) mount to synology

    Keep in mind:

    1) you must have a volume in DSM to mount this folder to

    2) you can only mount, not use it as disk

If you want to have a disk shared TI dsm isci link could be used but I think that's far away from way you want

  3. I did try and change the two drive to AHCI but it would not allow me to change them. What is odd is when i was using this same setup as a Freenas box it could see all 6 drives just fine.

If these 2 disk act as a raid you must create a volume on the mainboard raid controller and than the volume will be visible as drive in xpenology.

Raid = create raid on MB use the volume in DSM

    AHCI = DSM control's all

  4. https://www.synology.com/en-uk/beta/DSM61RC/ReleaseNotes

I was taking a look at the 6.1RC version of DSM and noticed something strange in the downlaods area. There is a PAT file for "VirtualDSM" . Does this have anything to do with what we do here on Xpenology? Did they create a universal PAT file for VMs? I guess this is wishful thinking but who knows. Any ideas?

It's to have an synology VM within synology I guess

  5. Hello,

I am needing help with an issue i have run into after building my XPEnology box. I have 6 SATA drives in my box, 2 show up as SATA in the BIOS and 4 show up as AHCI in the BIOS. When i am trying to create a new volume in DSM i am only seeing the 4 SATA hard drives that show up as AHCI. Can someone explain how i can get all 6 drives to work with XPEnology?

    Parts List

    Lian LI PC-Q25B

    ASRock FM2A85X-ITX

    AMD A4-5300

    Corsair ValueSelect 4GB

6 HGST Deskstar NAS 3.5 4TB Hard Drives

    Thanks

change them to AHCI mode in the BIOS ?

  6. Hi all,

My Bare Metal DSM5 is running fine (and so thanks to everybody here, specially coders/testers) based on Asus P5Q Pro, Dual Core E7500 etc.

    I have 5 drives currently (10K for system, 2x1.5TB, a 4TB and a 3TB) plus CDROM for booting.

I'm running about 100 Watts at the wallplug. Is there anything I can do to get this to drop significantly.

Less bigger drives for sure but part that obvious thing?

Change to a HP Gen8 ? Would that really get me less energy consumption?

I didn't manage to run properly the Intel script for power saving either.

    Thanks for your input.

    Best regards,

    Thibsie

start with a different processor, that one has alrady a high TDP of 65 watt.....

Further how many memory slots do you use ? Lesser = lesser power consumption.

Smaller drives ? i dont think so.... small or big all drives need to spin and need power for that. If you want to safe money there take a look at SSD's or shutdown/idle the disk during not needed hours.

change to HP gene 8 only makes sence if u use the xeon low power processor otherwise all result will be same

  7. if we always need to select it, is it possible to make it default?

on junes loader with ESXi image it was standard selected every time.

We will have to wait for 2.3 release to see how it is, but just as mindset:

    - If the grub config by ovf deploy is not already selecting the right lane we need to do that manually

    - The standard boot order in group can be edited so that it will be the same at every reboot

so Yes and Yes as answer for your question

  8. Leut der aktuellen Beschreibung für 6.02 Installation, kann man das in June auch schon machen.

    - OSFMount to modify the grub.cfg file within the loader's image. This is not strictly necessary as Jun has made it possible to configure what needs to be modified via the Grub Boot Menu.

ja... lese aber mal bitte weiter....

Bei June must du in de grub config hacken, by quicknick hast du per SSH ein config terminal modul was nog mehr kan

  9. i have a question about the grub menu

upon boot you can choose baremetal or esxi

do you need to choose esxi when you have an exsi system? or only the first time on install?

or if you have exsi, do you always need to choose exsi in the grub menu upon boot?

    always exsi !

  12. Hi,

    I have a HP ML150 gen9 with a Xeon E5-2609v3 running DSM on Jun's loader 1.01.

But when i run cat /proc/cpuinfo it only shows cpucores:1 but it should be 6 cores.

    Any Idea's?

    Thanks for your help

Use search? Discussed already a lot of times hard limit of 6 cores!

  13. cant reproduce this, running on ESXi and dont have this behaviour.

i had 1 issue in the past which looked like this and entered my ESXi monitoring. Here i saw that my DISK latency was running on 100-12000 MS !!!!

Problem solved by providing the right power to my motherboard, somehow a connector was misse and my motherboard didnt get the power it needed to handle the storage controller as a result my disk latency was very high.

Place power cord == issue solved, latency < 20ms

  14. Guys,

These days I have seen a lot of (more then 80%) people who posted up here in this forum about their issues/ problems are running/ involving VMware ESXi. Unless you currently have trouble with your drivers what mostly forces you to switch to VMware ESXi. Why don't you just install XPEno directly to your bare metal and it saves a lot of headaches and time as well? I a year ago also tried to run VMware ESXi on my Nas, and a few months later I kicked it out. I definitely caused trouble on myself. All my Nases are now bare metal installed.

Yes, guys, please tell us justifiable reasons why your nas running on VMware ESXi?

    Thanks and cheers...

because my hardware has much more power and i want to use it for more solutions than just running a NAS ?

Very simple, i dont by an xeon system with 16gig of memory to centralise my stuff and waist it for an NAS.

If i would have old non-performing hardware i would use bare metal, but come one.... i will not put several machines in my home to fill space, i big ass system handles all welcome in the 21 century of virtualisation, i run:

    - automation

    - NAS

    - Domotica solutions

    - File interactions

    - etc etc etc
