Hi,
Is it possible to update from DSM 4.2-3211 to DSM 4.3-3810 using the DSM Update function of the DS Control Panel, or do I need to use the package from here (and presumably install it in the same way as I did the original 4.2-3211 ?

Many thanks - just got time to spend with my server again now and found that I am somewhat outdated!
EDIT Or should I be going for DSM5 now? I'm thinking not DSM5 as that is still at BETA, even by Synology ?

On another note:
Do the front USB's work on the 54l in the synology software?
They do on mine, note I'm still on 4.2 though if that makes any difference.

The issue is most probably your hardware. See, Video Station transcodes the video into a supported format, in case of the web player it means MP4, and in case of the desktop app, well, I'm not sure, but that's quite limited too.
For this exact reason I do not use Video Station, but installed Plex Media Server, and it works perfectly. My hardware is an HP N54L, standard build apart from storage.
When you say "your hardware", do you mean the N54L itself, or something else?

You can install Trantor's 4.2 3211 build, it works fine, needs almost no after-editing.
You should also get the modded BIOS. It helps a lot and speeds up stuff.
But I would not use Plex if I were you. Direct playback from SAMBA is a lot faster, especially for MKV. For low profile, I can get good 1080p playback on DLNA/WebPlayer with low profile MKVs, but almost nobody makes those now.
Hi, and appologies as I know this is an older thread, but you say about NOT using Plex, and instead using direct playback from Samba.
How do you stream the media to the TV without using Plex? I tried using the built-in Media Server (on theDSM) but it didn't seem to work very well.

Ok, so now I can use Plex to stream via DNLA to my TV, but how do I play those same titles on my android devices and Win PC's ?

EDIT I was hoping to be able to just 'stream' to my Android devices, but it seems that you need to use a paid for app? Also there doesn't seem to be anyway to test it first

Hmm, ok thanks, I'll take a look at the Plex Media Server then. I must admit I am quite confused as whilst the video is skipping and jumping unwatchably, looking at the resource monitor on the server shows that almost everything is idle (processor shows 0 - 1% use, memory is 6%, network and disk have very occasional spikes of activity, but other than that it appears to be almost entirely at rest...)

Does the 'Video Station' package have any known performance issues?
If I run Video Station on the server, and then either;
a ) Access it via http://server-addr/video so that it plays the video in a webpage
or
b ) Use the DS Video Android application to play the video (whilst connected on the same LAN)
The video is jumpy and the sound is incredibly stuttery. If I browse to the file directly and 'open' it to play it the video plays fine without any issues.
I think it must be to do with Video Station, but I don't know how to determine what the issue is

How can I check for possible malfunctions in the code?
Start in the same way as darkest_star; press the power button and look for an event. If none the install the module and try again. Work your way through darkest_star's steps and see where it stops being the same.

As it sounds like a useful thing to know... how do you backup your configuration?
- Cheers IF you haven't read the manual or help pages and never done backups, do not touch anything and just pray that your server works.
If something goes wrong, come back here with ash on your head and cry about your losses.
Thankfully I'm still at the playing-with-hands-on stage of learning my way around the DSM, so nothing too much to cry about, just trying to learn as much as I can before placing my life onto it I think I will have to succumb to it and read the Synology DSM manual

I am running 4.2, repack 1.2, baremetal install on an HP N54L microserver.
When I fired up to management console today (on my Win7 PC with IE10) and started the "File Station" application I received the following Java warning:

Is there anywhere a manual for dummies for updating xpenology 4.2 to 4.3 on a microserver N54L?
I don't want to loose any data or settings ... thank you.
Back it up first.
Backup yo some other location.
Verify that both backup are good.
Make an extra backup of your configuration only.
make a new USB flash drive with updated DSM, update MAC and SN on it if it has been modified before.
Reboot from new Flash drive, use synology assistant to find the server and install new .pat file. If there is warning that volumes will be overwritten STOP and cancel.
Verify what settings are still there, if not - restore them from your configuration backup.
Pat yourself in the back and get some beer to reward yourself for a good job.
Post your success story here.

Hi not sure if this is the correct place or not, but would it be possible to integrate the power button handler for the HP Microservers as discussed in this thread: Power off from the buttom(sic). Although what is discussed there works, the implementation uses a complete rebuild of busybox, renamed as the kind contributor that did it didn't want to risk messing anything else up in the busybox pack. If it was integrated then this shouldn't be an issue? - Thanks again

So which is the command that has been setttled on that should be called?
I am unclear on the difference between "syno_poweroff_feasible_check" and "syno_poweroff_task", although I understand both are better than calling the standard "poweroff".

For the MAC address, to work around it for now, simply open the calculator on your computer and set it to HEX mode.
Add each of the parts of YOUR MAC address together, e.g. for the example 00223208D63C you do 00+22+32+08+D6+3C = 16E
Of the answer you use only the 2 righthand digits, so in this case 6E (drop the 1).
This is then added to the end of your MAC address when you edit the vendor file.

Sooo.. (just in case anyone is interested!)
I decided I had to find out the cause of the reboot issue, so I created a new USB boot drive with "SystemRescueCd" on it, tested it, and sure enough IT was able to reboot as much as it liked and not be lost.
So then I used the USB stick that I had been using for XPEnology and loaded that with "SystemRescueCd" as well... it booted fine from an "Off" cold start, but as per XPEnology would NOT be recognised on a reboot.
I've now taken my second USB stick, re-imaged that with XPEnology and I'm pleased to report that:
a ) It DOES now reboot and reload without a problem.
b ) The 'mount' command DOES now show my USB stick:
/dev/root on / type ext4 (rw,relatime,user_xattr,nosynoacl,barrier=1,journal_checksum,data=ordered) /tmp on /tmp type tmpfs (0) none on /dev/pts type devpts (gid=4,mode=620) /sys on /sys type sysfs (0) /proc/bus/usb on /proc/bus/usb type usbfs (0) /dev/sdq1 on /volumeUSB1/usbshare type ext4 (nodelalloc,synoacl) /dev/vg1000/lv on /volume1 type ext4 (usrjquota=aquota.user,grpjquota=aquota.group,jqfmt=vfsv0,synoacl)
So it seems ALL of my problems were related to this damn old 1GB HP USB stick I had laying around.
Weird thing is, the one I am NOW using is a very similar looking, unbranded, 1GB USB stick, with a another company name emblazoned on the cover.
Anyway, finally I might be able to make some headway with my server, I just wanted to update this thread so that ( a ) other people would know what was going on, and ( b ) If I am absent minded enough to try and use the HP stick again at some point in the future I might stumble across this thread again in order to slap myself!

EDIT Bah - I can't get into the UI because both IE and Chrome are reporting a problem with the security certificate...
EDIT #2 Got in, apparently there was a bad certificate on my machine that was blocking me access. Now to use the 'Restore' option

In addition to the above, (and perhaps related....):
I am running "XPEnology_DS3612xs_3211-repack-trantor-v1.2" on an HP Microserver N54L, but I CANNOT perform a 'reset'. If I select 'restart' from the DSM UI, then box goes down, goes through the bios, but then when it attempts to come back up it behaves as if the USB stick is not installed (just a flashing white cursor on the VGA output). If I physically power off, and then power on the box the USB key is seen at boot and all boots properly the way it is supposed to.
Is not being able to 'restart' a shortcoming of the trantor v1.2, or do I have something strange going on (and if so can anyone assist me in where / what to look at! - Thanks

Try mount command without any options. It should list all mounted devices. Found the one that matches your USB and take a note of the device name.

I only see /proc/bus/usb there that seems to reference "usb" in anyway, and (from the little I know of Linux) I don't believe THAT is the drive?

How do I 'start again' ?
I have been 'playing' with DSM on my microserver, but now I want to do a clean sweep and start again. I tried putting the image onto the USB stick again, but the server just boots up as normal.
How do I clear it and start afresh as it were? - Thanks

I found eject USB script on synology forum

Where it can be placed ? For auto-start after full boot.
p.s. right answer is:
1. create new script S99ZZZ_USB_eject.sh
with
sync; /usr/syno/bin/synousbdisk -umount sdk1; >/tmp/usbtab
2. copy it in the /usr/syno/etc/rc.d directory
3. give it the execute permission via ssh
chmod +x S99ZZZ_USB_eject.sh
4. reboot
Before placing this into an automatic script I wanted to test it on the command line first to make sure it would work for me, (and to see if my drives span down).
I've logged in as root, and then at the command prompt I've done:
sync; /usr/syno/bin/synousbdisk -umount sdk1; >/tmp/usbtab
However I receive the response:
Failed to Unmount USB device sdk1. Error Code: 0x2000
This would seem to imply that the USB disk is not mounted?
I have also tried replacing "sdk1" in the command with "sdq" which is present further up in the thread but that receives the same reply.
