  1. Is there such big difference between the US and Chinese firmware, aside from the language.

Lol, no, I just can't read Chinese and don't want to fuss with Chrome's translate function each time I go into the interface. If that doesn't bother you then save even more money and get the China models.

Edit: Oh! The timestamp is not in English...so unless your recording software is burning in a time stamp you'll have a non-standard date and time and it won't be in English. That was my biggest reason for going with the English firmware models. I don't like burning in anything to my stream. Too much load on the recording server. Instead, the camera adds the text and all the server has to do is decode and record the stream. Much less stress on the CPU.

PMSL think ill look for firmware or just buy locally, just want it straight forward and a £40 saving isn't worth the hassle

  2. 1 for Hikvision. Best quality (day and night) that I've come across for the price. As Threska960 said, look for US or International or you'll be stuck with a Chinese firmware. I own and have installed *many* Hikvision cameras and have been nothing but happy with them.

For $100 I'd look at these models:

    Hikvision DS-2CD2132-I (Dome Style)

    Hikvision DS-2CD2032-I (Bullet Style)

    Hikvision DS-2CD2332-I (Turret Style)

Prices vary on these models but I've seen them priced ~$100 on Amazon. If you're looking to buy in bulk there are some great vendors on Aliexpress.com that sell the English firmware models of these at excellent prices.

Thanks Cstout looking at these right now.

  3. HDD roaster ... cool or maybe not the right word. Noise should not be an issue for me.

As for price i think not a bad deal as same board goes upwards of $239 compared to you $208 here in rip off UK

  4. All of boards seems OK but I think it is not the best choice for your new NAS.

The price of these boards should be higher than $200 and the E3 v5 CPU should be more expensive and has more requirement for heat radiation.

In my practice, I used DELL R520 servers(2*L5520, 8G DDR3 REG, 6*2T HDD, 2*10G LAN) for ESXi matrix (more than 500 VMs) and use DIY NAS (G2120T, 4G DDR3, 4*1G LAN) for my private lab and decoding via Synology Video Center (2K source). So, a newest CPU (E3 v5) or fastest memory (DDR4) has no relationship with customer experience (or less obvious).

If your budget is more abundant, a better chassis and quiet power may be more important than a newer CPU or faster memory. :geek::geek:

Thanks Swanduron for your input, not sure why you are saying these boards should cost more. Are they not quality products and that better products cost a fair bit more. I have no need for enterprise class products like the dell. But their price does seem quiet reasonable, maybe I need to reconsider my build.

  5. Im just about to purchase a new server board based on the older C226 chipset and see that asrock rack have 2 more recent boards as below. I suppose my question is what is the likely hood that these will be supported in the near future or are they already. I did check the hardware support page but could not see any reference to the chips or am i looking in the wrong place ???? again.

    Many thanks

  6. Thanks Diverge, i have changed my build slightly as main board a bit expensive. Took redpineapples suggestion and ordered a standalone raid card and looking at the cooler he suggested as well. thx RP your knowledge has saved me loads of time.

  7. solid build overall.

Are you planning on going with ESXi?

I was hoping this might be possible, haven't ordered kit yet so room for man-over. Was starting to look at virtualization but no had enough time yet.

  8. As per subject

Looking for views on compatibility of parts overall

I know i can buy cheaper but ECC ram is more important for this build as is the ability to remotely check board via IPMI also adding LSI 9211 card via pcie 3 x 16 slot

    16GB (2x 8GB) Crucial Server Memory, DDR3 PC3-12800 (1600), 240 Pins, ECC, Unbuffered.

Intel Xeon E3-1231 V3, LGA 1150, Haswell, Quad Core, 3.4GHz Base, 3.6GHz Turbo, 80W, CPU, ECC Support

    Many Thanks

  9. Thanks for both replies, i think you are both right i can get better for less, i was looking for a low thermal unit with plenty of sata ports, but was seeing units that lacked cpu grunt until the board i mentioned above but to many greenbacks. So i think the board you mentioned or similar with a pcie-16 sas-sata (LSI 9211) as mentioned else where. This unit seems to fit the bill, trouble finding a unit that has been flashed, might have to follow this tutorial https://linustechtips.com/main/topic/104425-flashing-an-lsi-9211-8i-raid-card-to-it-mode-for-zfssoftware-raid-tutorial/ although it does mention using specific hardware. any other info i need or is it a go?

  10. Ok so I've had some time to look further in to this can somebody confirm I can use the synology version on the plex site link below

    https://plex.tv/downloads

Thats where I get my Plex packages from. You will probably need to adjust the security settings in Package Manager to allow you to install self or un-signed packages (forget which of those Plex falls under).

    Thanks

  11. Hi all looking to build a raid 6 system, im looking for peoples experiences as to hardware im not sure what to go with just yet and my searches dont give many usefully results

    Build so far:

    Case = Silverstone SST-DS380B

    Psu = 450watt Gold

    Harddrives 6 too 8 wd red 3tb

    So do i go with

    a) Motherboard with lots of mixed controllers on board (8+) " why this might be good "

    b) Purchase a dedicated raid card and build the array on this " Specific hardware recommendations and why"

Ps thanks in advance.... yes it will be doing some heavy VM work as well as plex and IP camera storage work
