  1. I since updated my server to version XPEnoboot 5.2-5544.5 and it seems to have knocked off my USB dongle which previously worked fine.

    Also, I've noticed their is much more lines of code in both 'rc' files that i previously edited to get my dongle working the first time around:

    /etc/rc

    and

    /etc.default/rc

    The old code looked like this at line 310:

    NET_DRIVERS="dca e1000e i2c-algo-bit igb be2net ixgbe tn40xx"

    And we previously changed it to this at line 310 which made it work before:

    NET_DRIVERS="dca e1000e i2c-algo-bit igb be2net ixgbe tn40xx mii usbnet ax88179_178a r8152"

    But now the 'NET_DRIVERS' line is now located at line 324 now, but looks slightly different, like this:

    NET_DRIVERS="dca e1000e i2c-algo-bit igb be2net ixgbe ${I40E_MODULES} tn40xx ${MLX_MODULES}"

    The update also removed the file which we added to the /lib/modules/ directory

    r8152.ko

    I've since put that file back and also tried to add the line of code that we previously added before (line 310) but at the end of line 324 like this, but it isn't working and im not even sure if its right.

    NET_DRIVERS="dca e1000e i2c-algo-bit igb be2net ixgbe ${I40E_MODULES} tn40xx ${MLX_MODULES} mii usbnet ax88179_178a r8152"

  2. It would be really useful to add the hardware your running Xpenology on when posting on update versions working or not, it would be of great help those of us who have not yet updated to decide if it is safe to update our particular hardware based on other users experiences.

    I want to add my Thank You to the guys who have spent their valuable time and effort in bringing this very useful software to us and for free, I for one appreciate it.

    I agree, It would be extremely useful to everyone to be able to list our hardware in each post.

  3. Can anyone tell me why when I connect my Netgear WNA1100 Wireless-N 150 USB dongle up to my server it seems to find the device okay, but when I use the inbuilt WI-FI menu on the server the device permanently says Wireless 1 - Searching....

    wna1100_wireless_n_xpenology.jpg

    The device works okay on Ubuntu, Windows 8 and Windows 10 still, it seems to be on the list of compatible Wi-Fi dongle list too.

    Any ideas?

  4. Hi Trantor

    So to recap, USB 3 to ethernet adaptors do work in Xpenology with the code mods specified?

    I am looking at running xpenology as a VM in esxi, will the code mods still work in setting up the adaptor for use in DSM using normal esxi usb pass thru or would I have to pass thru the usb 3 controller on my G8 microserver with VT-d to get this to work.

    cheers

    I used this on Xpenology with the method that Trantor suggested; my USB3.0 GB dongle now works on a HP N40l Microserver.

  5. I'm with you....

    The effort that has gone into making XPEnology is appreciated.

    The interesting thing (at least for me) is that this has been an interesting jumping point - or gateway to Synology products.

    After playing with it for a while, I've upgraded my parents from a D-Link NAS to a "real" Synology 2-bay device.

    I've also worked with a few friends, and recommended Synology devices on their networks.

    I've also started to look at some of the real Synology devices for home use - to replace my XPEnology box.

    Considering the "value" I place on my data - I'm not opposed to spending money on a supported platform.

    For my "data" NAS - there is a very good chance that I'll go this way within the next 6 months.

    For my secondary NAS (that I use for Plex and transcoding) - I wish that Synology would release something with a bit more horsepower.

    I suppose that this is where there is a decision point:

    A larger NAS that can support multiple RAID volumes, and an external PMS box might be the better way to go. (If a bit cost prohibitive)

    LOL - have to love first world problems.

    Same for me, I've always used QNAP devices personally but since using XPEnology I've already started recommending Synology to family and friends as an alternative. As Xpenology goes, it may effect a few Synology sales here and there short term, but I'm pretty sure it will enhance Synology's brand and sales in the long term.

  6. :ugeek:

    Hello guys, I wanted to thank you guys here on XPEnology. I used windows home server v1, windows home server 2011, windows server 2012 essentials, lubuntu, ubuntu and lastly freenas.

    I would never paid the money synology charges for one of their systemsm, thank you so much for making this possible.

    +1

  7. I'm assuming its not necessarily the safest option in most cases to simply hit the update button on our boxes due to the type of modified software that we're using.

    So could someone please shed some light on the best way to update from (DSM 5.2-5565 Update 1 to DSM 5.2-5565 Update 2).

    I don't see an update file for 'Update 2' on XPEnology.me website, is their a reason for that?

    Is it safe to use the official update method which is detected by my box?

    :grin: Thanks . . .

  8. I'm not sure if you understand this correct - or maybe I don't understand your question. :wink:

    The USB stick emulates the boot-prom in a real Synology device.

    A real synology device is useless without any harddrives - and so is XPEnology.

    Without any harddrives - no XPEnology.

    When installing the pat-file from Synology, it is installed on all harddrives in the system, to make the system more robust. There is nothing you can do about this.

    Nice one mate, I understand you loud and clear.. Thanks :smile:

    FYI:

    I was just expecting the installation to be similar to FreeNAS; with FreeNAS you can simply plug a USB stick in your machine and use that as your primary boot drive, regardless of whether you have your main storage disks installed or not. I made the post on the forum as I was curious as to whether that method could be used on this platform, but if you're saying this is how the genuine product behave then im fine with that.

    - How does it work when im installing apps, will they just take up room on my storage HDDs, along with the systems configurations etc?

    - Will they install across any drive I insert, or just the first ones?

    Thanks for your time buddy, enjoy your weekend. :grin:

  9. Hi guys, can anyone tell me if its possible to install XPEnology directly to the internal USB stick on a HP MicroServer n40L and have it always boot from there instead of my 3.5" internal SATA HDDs which its currently doing (or so it seems).

    1) Is it even possible?

    2) Has it been done by anyone else on here?

    3) Would a 32GB USB stick be large enough (if its possible)?

    Thanks.
