I'm not sure what your setup is but I run my NAS on esx 6.5 with my lsi -9211 passed through and have no issues.
I'm on the latest loader and running DS3617xs (latest DSM)

My "live" system currently runs DSM 6.0.2-8451 update 9 via ESX 6.5. This is with Jun's v1.01 loader for DS3615xs.
My data drives are connected to my LSI2008 based HBA flashed to IT mode and passed through to this VM.
Yesterday I created another VM but this time based on the DS3617xs using Jun's v1.02a2 and created one virtual disk as a test. It is running DSM 6.1.1-15101 update 2. So far so good. No issues. No time bomb errors. Installed some apps as a test. Will try this for a week or two to make sure there are no issues and then create a new VM with the same settings and pass my drives through.
Currently on my "live" system, volume1 is setup as SHR. should this migrate ok to the new 6.1.1 based VM?
Cheers,
James

I dont advise to migrate to DSM 6.1.1. There is problem with migration on esxi vm. Before you do that with live system do some tests with migration first. As far as i know all users doing migration on esxi reported brick system, including me.
Sorry I should have been clearer. I might a clean install of DS3617xs using Jun's v1.02a2 with my existing data drives.
**I have now moved and the system is up and running.

I have the LSI 9211-8i passed through via ESX. Works flawlessly.

Is there a better way of hiding the boot drive on ESXI or should I still add rmmod=ata_piix to the list of parameters?
Edit: Doesn't seem to work. I've tried both ata_piix and rmmod=ata_piix as extra arguments
Did you ever manage to hide the boot drive?

I've built a few now. Used a Node 304, an 804 and my current on is in a Define R5. All great cases.

I see that version 5 is out. Any news on on getting this new release working?
Does anyone know of a guide on how to build an app? I wouldn't mind seeing how it all hangs together.
Cheers,
J

Have you put together a machine? Are you just looking for OS install instructions?

Sorry should have added, plex runs great. Also have plexconnect running.

Hey
I've just completed the same thing. I had a DS412 but this just couldn't cut it so built my own. Was going to install OMV (Open Media Vault) until I came across Xpenology.
Anyway here is what I used
Fractal Designs Node 304 case
i3 4150
Gigabyte H97 board
4 x 3TB HDD's
Corsair bronze 500w PSU
8GB Kingston Memory
Hope this helps

Thanks for your replies. Yes it would be to add Plex into the equation. Also with the opportunity to add more drives later. Just curious to know whether the onboard LAN (RealTek) would be supported etc.

I currently have a DS413 which servers my needs well apart from not being able to do Plex transcoding. I am thinking of building a NAS around the following components and would like any advice or even if these parts are supported.
Silverstone DS380 Case
ASUS H81I-Plus ITX Motherboard
Intel i5 4570T (35w)
8GB or 16GB RAM
looking for recommendations for a cooler/heatsink, PSU and maybe even replacement fans for the case. I will like to keep this as quiet as possible. I already have 4 X 3TB HDD's.
Thanks in advance,
James
