  1. It seems that the built-in encryption is folder level only, and you have encrypt existing folders. I am trying to find a solution where I might be able to encrypt the entire volume or disk, is there anything out there?

I searched for encryption in the forum, but for some reason it only returned one hit, and didn't find anything useful via Google either, lots of noise.

  2. I am currently running DSM 4.2-3211 on my N40L, I am ready to update it to DSM because of all the scares of synolocker. I've been looking at how to do this and want to find out what the most efficient way is currently. Before I move forward, I want to make sure I have an understanding what to do:

    1. Of course is backup data.

    2. Currently only Nanoboot has DSM 5.0-4493 bootloader. To install, I make a USB drive with the Nanboot DSM 5.0-4493 bootloader to boot (currently v5.0.3.1 x64)

    3. Boot into USB. Install DSM 5.0-4493 with sinology assistant and migrate my 6 drives into DSM 5.0

    Questions:

I have 6 on DSM 4.2-3211 (formatted by DSM 4.2), should I leave all the drives connected? And then use sinology assistant to install DSM 5.0-4493, and will try to migrate the drives in.

Additionally, does nanoboot recognize the correct mac address? Does WOL work for N40L out of the box?

Finally I had to manually adjust the head parking time to 255 on one my Seagate drives to ensure that there is not an excessive amount of head parking, will I have to do that again? Probably?

  3. There are not many discussions on how important ECC is in a XPEnology/DSM setup, anyone have any comments? I am aware that most recommend ECC for ZFS systems since it's so memory intensive, but XPEnology do not appear nearly as ram heavy.

  4. I've read through a number of the posts in this thread and it seems like VT-D Direct I/O works fine with a M1015 in IT mode, and the SMART status gets passed through to DSM is that correct? I have a E3 1240 and appropriate mobo to support a VT-D system and a N40L that is currently running DSM natively, I am deciding whether to migrate over to the E3 1240 and run other VMs on that box or stick with the N40L as a standalone NAS.

I am considering because I am getting new drives for a new array and deciding which route to go. Is the ESXI pretty stable with VT-D and DSM VM?

  5. I just wanted to see if anyone might know how the synology system determines to spin the drive backup and if it's controllable.

My drives spin down fine at the pre-determined time in the settings, however, once spun down, it sometimes randomly spins backup. I want to see what others' experience has been like on this subject.

    I have a HP N40L with 6 x 2TB drives, running on DSM 4.2 Trantor 1.2 repack

Otherwise it's working well...minus OpenVPN, I've wasted a lot of time trying to get it to work with certificates and haven't had any luck.

  6. Any tips on the commands I can use to browse the size of the folders? Been google and haven't found an answer. My knowledge is limited of command line linux. It was amazing that I was able to figure out how to disable the APM on my only Seagate ST2000DM001 in the box using VI.

I am at a complete lost how to browse and figure out the directory sizes of each directory, any help appreciated.

  7. not sure if this is a better thread than N40L one, but cross listing for better chance of resolving the problems.

I installed Trantor 1.2 on a N40L with 6x2tb with the modified Bios. Much of everything seems to work fine, but I have a couple of questions I can't figure out how to do:

    1. Wake On Lan (WOL) - I retrieved the MAC address of the built-in NIC from the Bios (other people suggested live cd) I am honestly not familiar enough with Linux to figure it out without more detailed instructions (but I am not afraid of the command line). I changed it using this guide http://xpenology.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=2&t=1353. It was updated in synology assistant, but I not sure what to do next. I saw this thread, but I don't know how to implement the transfer discussed in the 3rd post down in this guide by jasonwu http://xpenology.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=2&t=665

Any help or more detailed step-by-step guide will be greatly appreciated as I would like to be able to remotely Wake Up server.

    2. VPN - I have trouble setting up OpenVPN. I enabled on diskstation, set up the privileges, exported config files, installed open vpn client on a windows 7 PC, edited the config file as instructed, and it seems to connect but Fails Authorization when I try to log in any ideas?

I was able to get the cloud station working and it is syncing just fine, but not the VPN for some reason. FYI, I also have the Priviate Internet Access (PIA) client installed on my computer, not sure if that affects anything.
