  1. Soo I was digging around and found a German post on this board with this link. It was pretty neat and I thought it would be great to get the QNAP OS working. It looks more polished than the synology code and they seem to lay out a bit more information about the hardware that is used which could be useful for our home usage. I'd love to get this working bare metal on my Gen 8 microserver since it would allow for video output. I really want to have a NAS with the option to use it as an HTPC. To some it's asinine but to me it makes sense. I might just go buy a QNAP or Synology but why not play with the OS first? It would be epic to get this type of OS set up in such a way that we could easily add linux drivers for our own consumer grade hardware.

  2. The only image I have is alpha5. I still don't know how to update a zimage. If you'd like me to test alpha10 please send me a password. I've happily filled out the form but still haven't really got anywhere using alpha9 due to the zimage. I'm attempting to test baremetal gen8 microserver. I never tested alpha5 since I figured I'd update to the latest first. However, if you insist, I can test alpha5 and report back in order to get the password. While I appreciate your desire for feedback, I think simply requiring the form to be filled out before should suffice. There is no need to force people to work with you, we all support what you are doing and want you to have the greatest success.

  3. I just submitted the google docs form to get permission to download the alpha7 image. I only have the alpha5 right now as well and ran into the same issue. I realize this is alpha but just supplying regular .img files would make everyone who's trying to test this have a much easier time.

  4. Please forgive my noobiness but I'm trying to understand this zimage thing and it's not making sense to me. I've installed linux and i'm trying to find out how to update the old boot image with the new zimage but I can't quite figure that out. From what I gather the old boot image is a filesystem not a traditional image like a .iso.

I have been trying for hours just to see the contents of the old alpha boot image with no success.

On the flip side, I have figured out how vbox guest additions share folders work with a mac.

  5. I was having trouble with sabnzbd and folder permissions so I tried to do a simple reboot. Now I can't login with any usernames through the web UI. The webserver thing from synology works but none of the other services I've installed are working except SSH. No sabnzbd, sickbeard, headphones, etc.

If there's any way to fix this without killing my entire installation that'd be great. I have full SSH access although I don't know what I should do to fix it. Any help is appreciated.

    I'm running baremetal on a gen8 microserver.

  6. There's a new firmware update that brings the fans down to 27%. Still nowhere near the 6% you're likely getting with this method. I flashed it and it works okay. I updated through iLO since I didn't have an OS and it went smoothly. I used the file named CPQJ0612.B69. It was a bit of a pain to extract using my mac but that's all I have handy at the moment so I've uploaded the file to this link if anyone wants it. https://drive.google.com/file/d/0BwdOXjhCCqWcUXhXcDJqRkxsNjQ/edit?usp=sharing

For what it's worth, I wasn't able to get past the ram limitation issue with ESXi 5.5 from the HP website. I haven't tried any other configurations.

  7. Da fuq happened to my original post?

I've been peepin' this board i Just discovered today. An older socket but I could snag an i5 cheap on ebay that would fit the job.

Also, is ECC memory important for this build? I'm kinda looking at building this with the intention for synology but potential to run FreeNAS or something else should this not pan out.

Edit: here are the links I was looking at.

  8. What an excellent and comprehensive reply. I'll give it a thorough read and see what I come up with. I'll post results. If you say we can get HDD's to spin down, then I'll be in good shape. Getting a GNOME environment running sounds ideal although I have no idea where I'd start with that.

Thanks a ton! I'll reply here again once I've figured out what I'll be doing. I've got a laptop that's got a cpu comparable to the G1610 so I'll test it out with plex streams and see how she handles it.
