  1. A quick question.

Do you know when Synology give out source codes of DSM 6 to community? By the rules they would have done it, right?

Probably somewhere between the time hell freezes over and when pigs will start to take to the air. [emoji14]

On a more serious note, I hope someone sues the sh*t out of them!

Apparently they are releasing the source code when version 6.0.2 drops. That's apparently their source code base.

What do you mean by 'drops'? They're currently at 6.0.2.8451, I think. So, you mean they'll release it at 6.0.3?

At least it's good news they're releasing *something*. I hope they'll do it soon! Thanks for the info.

    Oh really?

I thought they were still at 6.0.1.

Information I had was that 6.0.2 was going to be their source code base.

  3. I have a problem with the serial number.

In syslinux.cfg, I put one from http://quickconnector.orgfree.com/index.php or from the excel sn generator

synology assistant show me a blank serial. But the mac adress is ok.

packet center and information center tell me serial is blank

    Did I miss something ?

    I had the same issue.

    Change sn=xxxxxx to custom_sn=xxxxxx

    Then it should work.

  4. Awesome!

I have USB devices showing in my baremetal install! Woot!

One thing I have noticed though - the Serial number doesn't show in 'Info Center'.

EDIT: I got the serial number working by editing the isolinux.cfg file and changing sn=XXXXXXXX to custom_sn=XXXXXXX

    All working now!

  5. It's not hung.

That's just as far as the console goes.

Open a browser to find.synology.com or use Synology Assistant and you should be able to discover it on your network.

    oh really?

because with DSM 5.x I see all post messages till the login screen

    Yeah, that's right.

This bootloader is a little different.

  6. I edited and removed the sound card, no use for it in hp gen8

Settings got saved this time; why did you made a 100 Gb hdd ?!? 16 or 20 Gb are more than enough for install...

Not a big issue, but I wanted to use my ssd drive as datastore, and I only have like 30 Gb free on it.

Thanks again, finally working on esxi

Edit: What version did you converted ? From 12 to 10 or from 11 to 10 ? I want to try and make one myself, with a smaller install hdd.

Edit2: I did it, from version 11 to v10, with a 16 Gb drive; it works, I tried this conversion yesterday and it didn't work, because the boot disk was SCSI not IDE I guess.

Here is an ovf with only 16 Gb drive, no sound card, 2 Gb ram and 2x2 cpu.

As posted above, after import enter vm settings and check the drives, IDE and non-persistent for boot and SATA persistent for the first drive; you can add a new drive (only SATA) now or later, after the config. Use webui to modify the vm settings and add drives, vsphere can't add SATA.

Big thanks to oktisme and haydibe

    Hi m8,

    i'm trying your VM.

I just changed CPU cores from 4 to 1 because I don't have so many cores available.

I just start the VM after deploying OVF and let it run, but it hangs on "booting the kernel".

    any hint?

  7. Got DSM6 baremetal booting however external USB devices do not show. The console says the SCSI disk has been attached but it doesn't bring it into the DSM Ui. Bummer.

  8. H! All

I have DSM6 running on ESXi6 with SHR-BTRFS. Just noticed that my USB3 external drive is not being recognized by the sytem. And also my MFC Printer hooked up to USB3 is no longer recognized. However, in control panel under INFO, they are both 'seen' as connected USB devices.

    Any ideas why?

    TIA.

That's why I had to revert to DSM5. My USB drives weren't showing and I need them for my photos backup job.

I could see that the drive was passed to the VM but DSM couldn't see it. I tried both USB2 and USB3 emulation but still didn't work.

  9. Man, you're on fire Dynax. I will test the latest img in baremetal today. Between running baremetal and on ESXi, what are the main advantages of each? I would assume the only reason to go with hypervisor is to run multi environments but there is probably also a noticable performance hit vs baremetal, correct? Also, why not go with the latest esxi 6? Looks like Chege had good luck with it.

@Chege: which img did you use?

I had it working on ESXi6 as well. However my CPU didn't support vt-d so I couldn't pass through my disks to the vm and I didn't want to create volumes using my disks.

I didnt use an IMG to set it up though. I used the ovf files backbon page 7. It worked great (except for quickconnect). Everything else was working wonderfully.

@substorm - interested to hear how you go with Dynax's boot IMG on baremetal.

  10. So I installed the DSM 6 directly to the PC, which I use on DSM5. Everything works fine except for the ability to create something other than SHR. But that's okay, I do not need another disc format. Thank community.

What hardware do you have, Specifically NIC?

What .img did you use on the boot USB?

Also, What is 'Everything Works'? QuickConnect, Community Packages, etc?

  11. Sorry but I'm getting a bit confused with all the different responses. Can someone confirm that everything works in a baremetal setup as long as the hardware (mainly the NIC) is compatible (brtfs, volumes mounting, SHR, updatable os, packages install, etc.) ?

If it does, can I politely ask to write a step-by-step instructions including the proper img and pat files to download?

From what stout has said, He has baremetal DSM6 working. This includes btrfs but only with MANUALLY mounting the Volume first (this would need to be done at every boot). It seems he has official packages installing however I'm not sure about community ones.

Perhaps @cstout could post his steps including the .img and .pat files he used to get his working?

I have a similar machine at home that I might try with - providing enough of it works.

  12. Yes, but the whole server is only £20 more than buying the CPU on it's own. Also, you can fit more drives in the T20 - 2x 2.5" in the optical bay and 4x 3.5" in the normal bays, plus there's space to add one 3.5" or two 2.5" drives in the floppy drive hanger. There's also room to add an internal drive rack if you have some DIY skills.

I have 2x 2.5" drives as ESXi datastores and 4X 3.5" drives passed-though to DSM. All I had to buy was a couple of SATA power splitters.

If only the T20's were available in Australia. I'd hand over my cash right now! Haha. MN

Instead I'll be having to do a custom build.

  13. Has anyone been able to create a SHR volume with this?

I don't see the option. I'm forced to create a raid group and cannot just create Volumes from the start.

    Is this normal?

I was able to create the SHR using PCIe passthrough using 3-3TB SATA drives and 2 64 GB SSD drives I used for cache.

Can I ask what sata card you have for PCIe pass through?

Also, did you have to create a RAID group first before creating the Volume?

It seems I have to create a raid group and then can create a volume from there. But there is no SHR option.

I just used a cheap 4-port marvell card. No I did not have to create a RAID group. The volume manager wizard created the SHR.

Can you link me the card?

All I can find are over $100.

  14. @Backslash - I think you have to select the 'quick' option when setting up the volume. You only get offered RAID with the custom option.

    That's odd.

I don't get the choice. I have to create a raid group and then volume second.

Did you use the ova/ovf or install manually with the ISO?

  15. Has anyone got external USB HDD's attached to their DSM6 on ESXi?

I can't seem to get mine to mount.

I've added the USB device into the VM settings but it doesn't mount in the DSM interface.

  16. I owned these two case before, and I highly recommend U-NAS NSC-800. It's quiet, well built, and much better ventilation. the fan system in the Silverstone DS380 doesn't pull much air, and hard drives becomes very hot with this case.

    Hey wenlez,

Where'd you get the u-nas case from? I've been searching for one for a while now!

  17. With DirectIO Passthrough vSphere hands over complete control of the disk adapter to the VM. Any disks attached to the adapter can only be seen within that VM.

RDM is similar, but at the disk level. So I think you could map the 2nd RAID array to a vmdk using RDM - However, I've not tried this, I went straight down the DirectIO route as I had an existing SHR array to migrate from a physical installation of DSM.

    Hey berwhale,

Any reason I wouldn't be able to create and SHR array with DSM6?

When installed I don't get the option to choose SHR. I am forced to create a raid group first and then volume after that. But irs only standard raid groups I can create.

  18. Thanks for the replies!

So the general gist is that if I want to move my disks to a physical Symbology server (or to another physical Xpenology BareBones server) I need to use RDM or Pass through. And if I want SMART data I need to use Pass through.

If, however, I plan on staying with ESXi for good virtual disks are fine?

  19. Hi all,

I'm going to rebuild my server to be an ESXi machine and run DSM on top of that. I won't be running any other VM's except for maybe a home automation VM or something.

I'm trying to figure out what will be the best disk configuration going forward, whether I create datastores from the disks in ESXi, map the disks as RDM disks to the DSM vm, or buy a sata controller and do pci-e pass through.

Any insight into pros/cons would be great. Ideally I'd like to not spend any more money but open to suggestions.

    Thanks everyone!

  20. Good question.

I don't use SANs myself - i just have a single FQDN, which i use as CN

So i can just apply common sense: checking the access for the CN, but not for every SAN, would result in broadly usable certificates. Such a certificate could be used to spoof official sites. Would a CA support that? I doubt so!

Letsencrypt does not support wildcard cetificates... creating a certificate for *.example.com won't work...

edit: i missunderstood you... i am not sure if webstation is able to use example.com as a wildcard for *.example.com. just give it a try

    Okay cool.

Thanks for that. I'll give it a try without vhosts for the SANs and see what happens. I'm just trying to alleviate using port numbers in my URLs for various services running on DSM.

Now if I could only get vmware to allow me to add RDM disks I'll be set (I dont have a data controller).

  21. Was the same for me, until i activated webstation... After that things went perfectly fine.

Are you sure you added your dns name as a vhost in webstation?

    Ah. Maybe that's it.

Do I need to add a vhost for each SAN or just the domain name?

For example, do I need a vhost for mail.example.com;webmail.example.comDSM.example.com I'd these are in the Subject Alternative Name field in the LetsEncrypt wizard? Or do I just need a vhost for example.com?

  22. Is someone able to help me with Let's Encrypt? I can't get it working and not sure why.

It just tells me that it doesn't work and to log back in to the DSM interface.

    See: https://stefandingemanse.nl/how-to-use- ... ology-dsm/

    Hint:

[Create a port forward for port 80 from you router to the IP of your Synology NAS. I don’t know for sure but I think this is because of the automatic approval and is used for installing the certificate.]

Actualy letsencrypt creates a token, which will be tried to access via using the dns name you provided. If the token can't be accessed, the certificate doesn't get created.

    This is killing me.

I've got port 80 forwarded and have web station installed. I've also made sure I have A records in my DNS to point to my external IP address. But I still can't get the bloody thing working.

When I hit apply, It thinks for a sec and then says "The operation failed. lease login again to dsm and retry"/
