I got it to work now with Vstation 2 and QTS 4.2 beta.
I converted the 5565 image with:
qemu-img convert -f raw -O qcow2 XPEnoboot_DS3615xs_5.2-5565.2.img xpe.img
Created a new VM with the xpe.img and using realtek NIC and created two SATA drives
Once I booted up I saw all the init scripts start up and synology assistant found my new device.

Do you have a place to dump your VM so I can try on my TS-451? I was never able to make it work.
-
I have a TS-451 with 8GB of Ram and I tried to get xpenology to work in Virt Station. Unfortunately it seems to kernel panic and I don't know why. I can launch xpenology from the command line on my Mac using qemu and play it in vmware fusion but just not in the qnap.
I really like Surveillance Station in DSM and wanted to run it inside QTS virt station but maybe someone else can try..
-
Wait.. correct me if I'm wrong but you can't just update DOT or major revisions of DSM since the kernel is updated as well. The only reason this still works is because community folks have packaged this up to support other devices and defeat DSM protection. They actually have to bring over the modules from older versions of DSM to defeat the security protection. What you guys are seeing is the security protection unmount your filesystems. You won't be able to fix this yourself.

DSM 5.0 4493 update 4 had been released, anybody successful updated?
worked for me using the usual:
sed 's/flashupdateDeb/flashupdateDeb1/' /autoupd@te.info > /autoupd@te.info1
-
Isn't this biggest issue right now the security mechanism put in place that no one has defeated? Basically some kernel modules from older versions have to be brought forward and merged into the newer code/kernel. It's worked OK so far, but at some point we are going to hit a wall of incompatibility between the old and new.
-
what daemon was compromised and what versions? how do you know this?
-
I just powered down. Synology will not bail out xpenology of course.
-
4493 was just released. remember don't update until nanoboot is updated in case the kernel rev was changed
-
Does ESX have the concept of "snap-shotting" you can go back to a previous state if you screw things up.
-
I'm not sure if anyone has tested to see if maybe it is just a serial number check? I own a Synology NAS, and I gave my ESXI Xpenology the SN of my offline real NAS and the MAC of my offline real NAS, and it seems like features such as the buildt in dynamic DNS etc all work for me.
Did 4482 work for you as well on your VM of DSM?
-
Yes, but it is more strict now.
what check does it do to know if its real or not? could a pci table file be changed to trick it into thinking it’s a real synology?
-
FUCK SYnology!. damnit I dont have a screen to see what goes on with my gnoboot.. i just boot it from usb and thats it.. i dont have the luxury of a vga monitor.. So i cant see anything going on and if its going to unmount my shit then fuck this update. right when i thought everything was ok.. its not.. bastard updates and risks.
Synology doesn't owe you anything & no one is forcing you to update. Just be glad that the previous version is working thanks to Gnoboot & Trantor.
If you want a hassle free experience buy a real Synology!
I own a real synology! duhh.. but i built one with more storage and bays, however if its going to be unsecured then thats a big problem. I am greatful, but knowing my data is at risk isnt cool, henceforth why i say fuck synology for releasing updates like microsoft every TUESDAY!..
What does Synology have to do with the recent CVE's they fixed in 4482? They rely on several open source packages like SMB, curl, etc that they don't even work on. Be thankful they incorporate the fixes so quickly. I wouldn't lump them in with microsoft that has a web browser they haven't fixed.
The CVE's are:
Fixed a security issue of Windows File Service to prevent remote attackers from obtaining access. (CVE-2013-4496)
Fixed several security issues related to cURL. (CVE-2014-0139, CVE-2014-0015, CVE-2013-6422)

what about giving us real machine noobs some love with DSM 5.0?
I'm running gnoboot directly on my n54l without VMware. Runs fine.
-
AFAIK and from my experience, DSM won't know anything about SMART data even when using SCSI passthrough. For me this was a deal killer. I thought for the $240 the n54l can be had for the in US that it was low enough of a cost to be a standalone service.
-
worked mostly great on my n54l. almost nothing was lost and crashplan still worked after I upgraded java to v7.
having trouble with owncloud after the move from sqlight to mariadb in DSM5. myphpadmin doesn't work either.
Can you please tell me if Push Notification is working for you?
It's not. It was working with one iOS device in 4.3. Not anymore.
Somehow the forwarding is working behind my pfsense firewall.
I don't use either of these services, so its not a big deal. I use email notifications for problem alerts.

Anyone try 3810 update 3 that was just released?
-
Is it possible as long as the update doesn't include a kernel update then everything will work fine?
-
Hi,
I am new to Xpenology and am still in a phase where I am trying this build on test machine. However I couldn't figure out why exactly do we need this ?? In general Trantor's 4.2 is running fine on my network and no issues so far. Why do we need to change the MAC addr.....Could you please explain a little bit. I couldn't find an answer in the original forum either....Sorry for my ignorance....
[/attachment]
honestly you really don't. 4.2 works great.
The MAC in synology matching your actual server MAC is for WOL support.
-
do i dare try an in place upgrade of your 4.2 ds3612xs build?
-
What is the security issues with 4.2? I thought it was just enabling DoS security protection defeated all the firewall rules?
As long as you DID NOT enable. Main Menu > Control Panel > Firewall and QoS > Security > enable DoS protection
Your firewall rules should work fine.
That being said, of course you have your NAS behind a nice firewall like pfsense and you are only port forwarding the ports you want to get to xpenology.

I personnality switched to OpenMediaVault. XPEnology is a great project, but I can't let a non-updated OS with security issues running on my network.
Interesting. Hadn't seen OpenMediaVault. I might be willing to switch but I have drives of different sizes and SHR is really a brilliant solution over RAID5. Also, I'm enjoying the surveillance station so I'm not sure how I would replace that if I ran OpenMediaVault. Run something like motion?

IS there a way to install this version directly into ESXi without having to compile items (I have no clue how to compile components of this or any other OS) ?
yes. one of these images even comes with a vmdk or a vdi that can be converted to a vmdk.

It's working now with Vstation 2 and DSM 5.2 beta. Realtek nic. Convert the image first.
qemu-img convert -f raw -O qcow2 XPEnoboot_DS3615xs_5.2-5565.2.img xpe.img
