Qi-Ze Huang Posted January 30, 2018 Share #1 Posted January 30, 2018 (edited) Hi everyone, Here I have Dell PowerEdge R415. I installed 4 HDDs in hard drive trays and 1 SSD in DVD caddy (taking original optical drive off). I booted it with Jun's loader, successfully installed DSM6.1.4 and built RAID 6 with 4 HDDs. At first, I hope to use SSD as cache. But DSM won't recognize SSD (5th drive) in DVD caddy. However, SSD's seen in BIOS. I logged into DSM's ssh console and checked dmesg. I found no messages related to fifth drive. Any suggestions? Related pictures are attached below. And dmesg log file is here: dmesg-log.txt Picture1 - SSD is connected through "SATA E" cable. b0fh Posted January 30, 2018 Share #2 Posted January 30, 2018 I am only guessing, but I suspect that port may be set (or only allowed to be changed from) ATAPI mode instead of AHCI mode. If it can be changed, it should be addressable in the BIOS.
IG-88 Posted January 30, 2018 Share #3 Posted January 30, 2018 chipset sata is usualy 4 or 6 ports so i guess the 5th could be a additional controller for the odd and there is no driver can you post the output of lspci?

Polanskiman Posted January 31, 2018 Share #5 Posted January 31, 2018 Looking at the specs of that machine it only has 4 SATA ports. That 5th port is on a different controller as mentioned by IG-88 and is meant for the DVD. Run any live usb linux distro (ubuntu, xbuntnu....) you like and run this: lspci -k | grep 'Kernel driver' Post the output here.

Qi-Ze Huang Posted January 31, 2018 Author Share #7 Posted January 31, 2018 Thank you for all your replys and help. I booted Dell PowerEdge R415 with Ubuntu Server 16.04 as advised, and the attached file is the log @Polanskiman asks for. Now I guess I missed the driver "pata_atiixp" and don't know how to configure that in DSM6.1.4 yet. b0fh Posted January 31, 2018 Share #8 Posted January 31, 2018 You don't really want an SSD tied to an ATAPI or IDE mode port, performance will not be very good if it works at all. I would buy a cheap sata controller instead. Check these forums, there have been a few posts.
