Cr4z33 Posted January 29, 2018 Share #1 Posted January 29, 2018 I was planning to add an additional volume to my custom built NAS to avoid to use too much my 4 SHR RAID hard drives. Unfortunately I've ended all the available SATA3 ports. I therefore thought about using a USB3 external 1TB (mechanical) hard drive, but I wonder if it would work without problem when using it for Synology Surveillance System and for its records? Polanskiman Posted January 30, 2018 Share #2 Posted January 30, 2018 It's not possible out of the box because external drives cannot be made volumes since DSM does not manage external drives. There is a work around that is explained in the following link but it seems old so not sure if that would work with the current DSM 6.1. and honestly I would not advise it. http://82.100.88.27/wordpress/?p=5 There is another option as explained here: https://forum.synology.com/enu/viewtopic.php?t=77947#p293164 and detailed here: https://forum.synology.com/enu/viewtopic.php?t=129503#p493831 The other option is to simply change your HDDs for bigger capacity.
