Schedule Backup with external HDD

jokerigno

Question

Hi all,

I'm an happy xpenology user (DELL T20) and till now I used to backup mu xpenology using a external 1tb hdd.

I noticed that sometimes it works and sometimes it don't work (without an apparent reason) so I'm looking for a different solution.

I've googled around but found nothing good enough for a lazy man like me.

Do you know if exist an external hdd dock station that can allow schedules for power on/off so I can schedule backup and then switch off hdd automatically?

Or If my idea is too mad can you suggest me your best practices?

Thank you in advance!

I've not tried this myself, but you could look at editing the hard disk settings in synoinfo.conf to fool the system into thinking the usb hdd was an internal drive. That way you just create a volume on it as a local backup target and it will power up/down as set.

Why do you not search on the synology site for a usb drive wjich is compatible?
Then the USB drive will automatically power up and down ...
Worked for me with a  mybook essential for a long time, before I replaced it with my old 411j
Thank you!

It seems that all WD external HDD are compatible with DS 3615xs(my xpenology).

So how to automatically plug in and out HDD for scheduled backup??
