Hello good morning!!
I want to set up a NAS and first I had thought of a Synology, but seeing the prices I was a little scared to tell you the truth!
Browsing Google I got here, but looking at the forum a little, I see that it is somewhat outdated over time. Is it still possible to mount an XPenology today? Is it easy to do or will it take many hours/days? Is it really going to be cheaper for me?

Thanks and regards.

Hello to everyone, i am from Portugal and i'm 39.

I am an owner of a Synology Nas DS216+ that i use for surveillance with one camera

now i wanted to add more cameras and found out that i need to have licences, and not they are not cheap

searched for a dedicated nvr and even bought one, not synology, but once more, limited in number of cameras, so i started to read, search online, and found out this OS, xpenology

i must say that i do like what i am reading...

need to say that recently i won an f2-423 from terramaster and want to try to turn it into a dva 1622 and in that way can have my dedicated NVR with video output to my tv

thanks

Hello guys!

This is Adem. I'm an IT specialist. I am NAS noob at all.

I own DELL R320, I tried several free NAS OS's but xpenology's "Synology" seems very cool, but a bit complicated 🤪

I want install on my R320 "Xpenology" which has 4x6TB Seagate SAS Drives, RAID5, PERC H710 Mini (Embedded) Raid Controller.

I just try with @fbelavenuto 's Automated RedPill Loader (ARPL), unfortunatelly without success "No Drives detected" issue.

I would be happy to get a few suggestions from experienced members, how I could solve the issue.

Regards

cheers

Hi! How did you managed to boot from emmc module? or used usb boot?

I have a naming problem with emmc drive. Linux find it as mmcblk0(p1-p3) but the script is looking for mmc(3) drive.

Hello I'm Nico, French Guy.

I have a DS415play and very happy with.

I was looking for a new DSxxx+ series, but the price was too high, so I decided to build a low cost pc with 2nd hand parts and install Xpenology on it.

The pc is now finished, power consumption optimization is done, stability test as well & Proxmox is installed.

I'm now looking how to install Xpenology.

My Idea at the end is to run 1 instance of Xpenology for plex, photo, transmission, synchro,..., 1 instance for a mail server and maybe 1 instance for TOR relay.

and be able to test the DSM upgrade safely.

I still have one open point on HDD, between passthrough, raid in proxmox or raid 1 from the motherboard controler or a mix of that.

Thx to all of you for the wonderfull job done on that project

Hi Everyone,

I'm new to this forum but not completely new to Xpenology.  In the past I had a HP ProLiant MicroServer Gen8 but decided to upgrade to a Synology DS918+ 4 bay Nas back in 2019.

I am still a newbie though as my knowledge was limited back then and unfortunately it still is limited.  I messed up my server when I tried to upgrade from DSM version 5.? to DSM 6. That is when I realized my knowledge and skills where not that great and I was better of buying a proper Synology Nas.

Anyway, full circle I now need to set up my old HP ProLiant MicroServer again so I can do a backup of my Nas to repair 'file errors.' And, yes I do know I should have a backup already but as I said my knowledge is limited and I seem to learn these things when things go wrong.

There are a few new ways to build a NAS now. All are a lot simpler than it used to be. ARPL is the easiest, but TCRP and M-Shell are also quite easy to use.

Thank you very much for this.  I will look into and read up on each of these suggestions. I am sure that your knowledge will prove to be very helpful to me as I work my way through this.  Thanks again.

Thank you, I decided to try ARPL and it installed after a few attempts (operator error) and is now running on my HP ProLiant MicroServer Gen8.  I have just started the process of backing up my Synology Nas to this new build and it is currently working beautifully (fingers crossed). I really appreciate your help in setting me on the correct path and the Xpenology Community in general and of course Mark Star for writing and developing the Automated RedPill Loader (ARPL) and his You Tube video which I found to be very helpful.

Success! Backup completed after approx. 5 days then another 4-5 days to restore the data onto the new Volume. Thank you again Rojoone2 for your help in getting me started and lesson learnt I am going to keep the backup for a "just in case" scenario.

Hello everyone !

I'm an mechanical engineer. I have basic knowledge of IT/coding.  I'm new to the Xpenology/Synology experience ! I really enjoy the learning experience and the DIY side of the Xpenology. The reason why I started this is because I found TrueNAS hard to set the way I wanted. English isn't my mother tongue, I'm trying my best to be readable :)

I own a laptop ASUS ROG for gaming, an old DELL R720 rack server for VMs and testing, an old HP G1 Tower with a current "NAS" that is just 3 drives shared over smb and a plex server on top. I just bought some stuff to start my xpenology journey :

MotherBoard ASUS P8C WS

Intel(R) Xeon(R) CPU E3-1245 V2 @ 3.40GHz

16Gb RAM DDR3

LSI-SAS9300-16i IT mode

5x2Tb WD enterprise

1x6Tb WD RED

Fractal Define R5 (it's a really silent case)

So far I have tested on my ESXi (R720) the Tinycore-Redpill (DS2422+) from @Peter Suh entirely on a VM with vdisks, remote access over my domain, email alerts, 2FA for users, Drive, Photo, PLEX, Tailscale and Docker.  (https://github.com/PeterSuh-Q3/tinycore-redpill)

I am starting to build the NAS like this :

  • ESXi 7u3
  • DSM with passtrough both SAS (9300-16i have 2 chips so 2 SAS to passtrough ?!) and front case USB passtrough

Install of ESXi is pretty straight forward as I already done it for the R720. Starting and installing DSM with TCRP works (but I don't have the sames options as I had on the R720, maybe it's the passtrough) Setting the disks is my task now and I'm kinda stuck. I managed to make it work with fisrt disk starting at position 1 in the DSM GUI. but 2 days ago 1 disk failed (only in DSM, It works otherwise) then I unplugged the wrong drive because disk4 wasn't my 4th drive anymore. My setup was : SataPortMap=088 DiskIdxMap=0C0008

I started again from scratch. I now have a working ESXi 7u3 and a bootable TCRP.

See you around

Hello fellow enthusiasts,

I own 2x Synology RS815+ and 1x Synology RS815+RP. They use the Intel Atom C2538.

SYNOLOGY has arbitrarily cut off my ability to update the DSM to 7.2.  I want to use 7.2+ for Container Manager, Docker, and other 7.2+ features.

Oh, the RS815+ is too old they say!

But the RS818+ uses the same processor, but CAN upgrade to DSM 7.2!

So I have joined the forum to find out how to hack the RS815+ to accept the RS818+ firmware, or, alternatively, install xpenology on an original synology device! How silly is that! Anyway, whichever route works, the forum seems to be full of friendly helpful people, glad to join.

Hello to all guys. I am newbie here and a newbie guy in IT work. I just learn the basics atm in a private school ( trying to learn a most things it's possible. I like network profession in computers) so in this 3 months that I am in school I learn a lot of thinks like win server, some basics in Linux OS( Ubuntu) and now my professor say to me that you can see NAS( Synology) os with lets say not very official way in you VMware machine ( I have a VM pro run in my PC).There I make my testing with windows server 2022. In active directory domain services, network share, storage etc. But now this land's ( Cloud word NAS Synology) is new for me. So the question is if I can install in my VMware any version of NAS to work on it, and see this world with my own eyes and work for some time. I don't care if it's trail and end's in 30 days like windows.

P.s I want to thanks all of you here in this community who you give some of your time to respond to this topic.
