Hi all, I'am Franka, a female railroad signaling inspector in the Netherlands by ProRail.

Love to try out things with old PC's, laptops, phones and tablets.

And with all diverend sorts of OS.

Now I like to make my own Xpenology server.

I have a Synology DS211+ & DS212+ NAS, but I like to build an 4 bay server with 4x 3TB HDD (WD Red).

My system is an old PC with a Asrock 75M-HVS AMD cpu A4 3300 APU, 8Gb DDR3 ram.

Think it is a nice one to try Xpenology on, so.....

Hey everyone, name is Derek. I’m a nuclear mechanic from Canada.

I’ve been running a DS918+ for a few years now and just made an upgrade from 4 x 4TB drives to 4 x 8TB drives.  This means I now have 4 x 4TB drives that need a home.

So, being the absolute computer hardware enthusiast I am, I’ve built a b450 based mATX computer in a Thermaltake V21 case and I’m about to install Xpenology on it.  Once I’m running and syncing between it and my DS918+, I’ll be moving it to my secondary location.

This will be computer #6 🤣

Hello my name is Kostas from Greece.

My job is related with hardware (sort of IT engineer) so i would say i'm a hardware junkie!

Also for many years i was on the extreme overclock scene, went to some competition of Asus, Gigabyte, oc events, demonstations, excibitions etc (my profile at hwbot.org https://hwbot.org/user/mortisboy/ )

I'm so happy i found this community and that was randomly as i was searching for new 12TB HDD's for my custom NAS!

I'm coming from OMV (openmediavault) that served very reliable for about 4 years now, but it was time for upgrade to a new version, i had 2.3 and now is 5.5.

But this had to be done from scratch, so i was tempted to change to something else and then i found this wonderful community!

What a great job you've done here people, my congrats to all who've been involved on this, the development of xpenology is magic, there's nothing better to build your own NAS storage with hardware you select and have "no limits" on storage and under the shiny and functionality of DSM.

I did a lot of reading and managed to do a clean install of DSM 918+ on Jun's 1.04 loader with absolutely success . The only thing i'm having is some improper shut downs approximately at 6-9 hours of uptime, but the pc is not restarting is rock stable, the DSM itself is restarting, i believe maybe is the usb stick that overheating, but sure i will find some solution in the forum.

Greetings from Greece

Kostas

Hi my name is Thijs from The Netherlands.

Have a couple of RPi's running Domoticz, Volumio, Octo-Print etc.

Just replaced my Synology DS710+ for a DS720+.

DS 710+ Was running with 2pieces WD20EARX from day 1.

But during my trials to see if we can get it to run DSM6, the boot loader is giving me issues.

Have to look throught the forums to see if we can restore the orignal bootloader and make a backup !

After this the fun will begin, trying to see if we can get it running on XPEnology.

Kind regards,

Thijs

Now I am build using Xpenology DS918+ using my OLD PC(i7-7700K, Gigabyte z270,)

I did not know anything about NAS but now with the help of Xpenology community I am building one.

Hi all,

I just joined this forum. I'm living in Scandinavia. I have successfully installed DS918+ on my NAS and also the latest update worked instantly. Thanks to all information on this forum I was lucky to get the installation to work directly. I'm using my NAS with Roon and Plex. They work as I hoped to. No issues at all (so far)!

Happy Holidays 🎅

Cheers,

Carl

Hi,

I’m Max from Germany.

since were back in lockdown here till at least end of January I have a lot of free time as a Student so my plan is:

-buy a cheap PC on eBay (Fujitsu Esprimo P410 E85+ with Intel P. G2020 @2,9Ghz (~40$))

-buy a few (cheap) 4TB HDDs.

-use it as an Hyperbackup for my Raid1 DS218 (with 2x Ironwolf Pro 8tb)

what do i need to look for?

Greetings

Hi everyone,
I'm an technician and systems support in electronic manufacturing company in UK. Also I'm web developer with specialisation in managing databases (MS - SQL, Postgres, MariaDB). In my history I had great opportunity to work as beta tester of AmigaOS 4.0, as also as writer to Amiga paper magazine.
Since Amiga period, I earned lot of experience on many platforms - mostly Linux based environments.
Since few years I'm interested with network drives. Beginnings were not easy. My first file server was installed in Linux based satellite receiver (Dreambox), than I moved to home server, than I installed DD-WRT and FreshTomato routers with HDDs. First real NAS project was with Raspberry Pi 4.0 and OMV/NextCloud. After short time I bought a bit rusty NAS from Synology DS509. Finally I landed here - with Xpenology on my old/new Microserver N54L.
I'm believer Christian, husband, father since ... long time :). I'm sceptic about unproved theories (like evolution or about origins of Universe), I like trumpet music, electronic music.
Hopefully this is enough. :)

Hello everyone.  I am located in Tucson, Arizona.  I am old(er).  I started off running a bulletin board system (BBS) on an Apple II+ platform back in 1985 - anyone remember 300baud dial-up modems?   Watch "Halt and Catch Fire" series on Netflix.  Since then, have been very involved with technology, but not an expert.  I am a HAM radio operator - got my license in the early 90s.  Currently work at home with a full Ubiquiti network with an Untangle firewall that I configured myself.  Been playing with several RaspberryPis, home automation, DAKBoard, PiHole, and purchased a Dell R710 for tinkering and learning ESXI.  After successfully updating the R710 to all the latest firmware *boy that was fun*, I spend several months configuring several VMs on ESXI and experimenting with each.  I just blew that all away and ordered an LSI 9211-9i SAS card to try TrueNAS Core for a bit.  Also interested in making XPEnology work on this R710 hardware.  I am very willing to learn.

Hi all,

I am a lecturer at Plymouth University. I understand HDD technology but haven't explored the intricacies of NAS, yet... I have a crashed Volume on my Synology NAS and I am trying to understand why it happened and how to fix it. I am trying to find out if it is due to Timeout mismatch due to the drives using SMR. If I am able to recover the data do I need to bin the drives or can I change a setting to fix it?

Generally, SMR drives will work (and should not be responsible for a DSM volume crash) but write performance will be particularly poor.

If the volume is crashed and not the Storage Pool (the array), it's an unresolved problem with the filesystem, not the drives.  If you want to pursue this further, post a question in an appropriate forum so we don't clog up this one.

Hey, I'm Kef and I'm a statistical analysist/data scientist.

Looking at building a XPEnology nas to primarily use to back up data from my PC and laptop but not sure where to start. Completely new to NAS.

Considered buying a synology but have  majority of the parts available to build a second PC to use a NAS and not the funds to buy a synology.

I'm interested in building pc's but have limited knowledge on using linux systems, coding outside statistical uses and languages, and anything more technical although I'm hoping to expand my knowledge.

Would love some advice on whether my hardware is suitible and where to start and what loaders/DSM would be best to use in easy to understand noob format.

Hey everyone, I'm a tech minded law prof who knows he's been tempting fate by not having any sort of reasonable backup for a whole ton of stuff. The prices just always seem kind of unreasonable (he says as he discounts entirely the value of the stuff he could lose), but XPenology looks like an interesting alternative. I'm thinking about either installing on a Lenovo Stick 300-01 (Atom™ Z3735F Processor (1.33 GHz 2MB)) with 2gb ram and 32gb internal storage (emmc) or on an idle HP Compaq 8200 Elite (i5-2500 @ 3.30GHz, 3301 Mhz, 4 Core(s), 4 Logical Processors, 8gb ram). I'd prefer the stick, but then would need to run a USB hub (it's usb 2.0, not 3.0) for drives and network connection (it only has 802.11n). The 8200 Elite is just larger than I'd like to have laying around. I think I have some other boxes in the basement. I should go look. But anyway, for now I'm off to the FAQ and the tutorials to see about whether this is worth doing or whether I should just bite the bullet and get a manufactured NAS box (Newegg's having a sale, of course).

Wish me luck, and thanks for the resources!

USB connected drives are not suitable for DSM.  It can be made to work but it's problematic and hacky (not that XPEnology isn't already hacky - but more of it).  So you really need a platform with enough direct-connected SATA ports for your drives to properly have a go of it.

Greetings to the whole community. I write from Rimini, Italy, and I am a very recent Xpenology user. I installed, with the help of a friend, Xpenology version 6.2.3-25426 on an HP NAS for use in a home network. With the help of this community, I hope to be able to make the most of Xpenology. Thank you for welcoming me and I hope to get to know Xpenology better.

Greetings Everyone,

I'm from Nevada, USA and I enjoy building, customizing, modding and just about everything else PC related. What I haven't done yet is create my own NAS and I aim to do just that. I hope to get some good advice and direction from this community it seems there are some members with quite a bit of knowledge. I hope to achieve my goal as I enjoy the Synology DSM OS, but their hardware is a bit out of my price range for now.

I want to build a NAS capable of holding 8-10 3.5" drives. My only goal with this NAS is to use it to backup all my other devices and then send that data to a cloud backup. So I am not needing anything really powerful and no one will really be accessing the data.
