Hi, I'm not sure if this is the correct part of the forum, but here we go:

I have set up an XPenology server. I used version 5.2 because it's simple to set up and as far as I'm aware I don't need any additional features.

My problem is that I have a large number of IDE/PATA hard drives that I want to use in the system. I've compiled and installed the correct modules and they seem to work fine in the system until I reboot. Every time I reboot, the IDE drives are dropped from the configuration. They still show up in the storage manager, but their status is changed to "not initialized" and they're dropped from the raid volume. It happens with all drives attached to both IDE controllers in the system.

How do I faut find this?

It looks likes your ide drives are somehow losing their DSM partition information

Can you give some more information about your mobo/ide controllers and number of drives

Did you try 5.2 loader 'as is' and your IDE controllers to see if the built in modules covered your hardware?

You could look at your dmesg raid/drive output for the various scenarios ('as is' 5.2, your modules added, after reboot with lost array) to compare and see if there are errors in the disks/drivers and raid build process and system partitions

The motherboard is an Asus P5Q SE, with a core2duo cpu and 4gb ram. I've recently used the computer for a different purpose, and it is perfectly stable on windows 7. I have however replaced the PSU with a more powerful unit due to the number of hard drives. I have checked memtest86+ since then and got no errors. Only a short run though, but on the motherboard I first used I got serveral within the first minute, even though DSM seemed stable.

The on board ATA controller is a Marvell 88SE6102

In addition I have a highpoint HPT370A controller

There is also a SIL3114 SATA controller in the computer, but no drives attached yet.

Neither of these were covered by the built in modules, so I built my own modules for them (by cross compiling from an ubuntu virtual machine on my windows 7 work station), and set them to load at boot by placing a file in /usr/syno/etc/rc.d

There may be a couple un-neccessary modules being loaded, due to migration from a different motherboard, and I may have forgotten to remove what is no longer needed.

Yesterday after posting I tried upgrading to 6.02, to see if it would solve the problem. The bootloader however does not support my network interface (Atheros L1E) it seems, so I'm back to 5.2 for now.

these ar my results from running dmesg(right now there are no drives attached to the Marvell on board ATA controller, and the HPT only has drives on one of its two ports). It seems that the connected ATA drives are ATA 13.0 and 13.1 this is after reboot with resulting ATA drives dropped from array:

The lost interrupts and chs errors might point to some hardware configuration settings needing changing.

For diagnostic purposes I'd suggest stripping back the system and do a set of tests for stability, then add on more components;

Disable onboard parallel, serial, sound

Disable onboard sata/pata

Remove the SIL card

Boot/test the HTP card with drives - I'm presuming you have setup the HPT as a jbod, IDE master/slave are all correct etc - and jumpers on the drives match etc

Check the dmesg and see if there is any change.

If stable then enable the onboard pata and retest etc and see if it 'breaks' at any point.

As an aside, your total potential drive capacity with all controllers seems to be 16 (6+2+4+4), presuming again that you have altered the drive configuration in synoinfo.conf to match.

I entered the BIOS and disabled everything I'm not using, and it did not help. I then tried googling the error message, and realized I was having an IRQ conflict. I then enabled PNP OS in the BIOS, and the error is now gone. Apparently Linux will try to allocate IRQs regardless of this setting, so you have to make the BIOS stop assigning IRQs, or you'll end up with IRQ conflicts.

I believe the problem is solved, but I have not yet had time to do any testing. On to that now :)

Thanks for your help, I was about to give up on  using the PATA drives.

EDIT: yes you're right about my setup, it is currently limited to 16 drives, and I've edited the config file to allow for up to 20 drives. I intend to start with 12 drives or so, and keep the SIL controller free so that I can migrate to SATA disks as the old PATA drives die. At the point when I have 2 PATA drives left, I'll replace the 4port PATA controller with another SATA controller.

It appears I was being too optimistic. To give it a proper test, let the system rebuild the degraded array using the two disks attached. I left it on all night, and the next morning it had crashed. web interface down, telnet down, and I could not even log on at the server itself.

here's the dmesg from just after the following boot:

As far as I can tell this doesn't show any errors regarding the PATA drives? Is there a log file that I can look into?

Did you strip back the number of drives for testing? ie only 2-4 connected to the HPT?

If you have a lot of drives connected, check the power supply can deliver whats needed on the 12v/5v rails continuously, (noting that the dmesg says some drives are needing full power mode)

Also, a possible dumb suggestion, but if the drives can be set to master/slave, with jumpers, do that rather than 'cable select' mode

well it's a 750W PSU, currently running 8 drives (6 SATA and 2 IDE as shr2), a low power consumption GPU and a mid range (in terms of power consumption) CPU. It should be enough. I guess I should get hold of an oscilloscope to check for ripple, but I find it strange that it only happens on IDE devices.

There's still a few things left to try, but it would be great if there was some way to make the system log what happens, since dmesg only shows the last 3 pages or so...

I guess I should try out the SIL sata controller, as it's also on the PCI bus. That would determine if this is a IDE issue or a PCI issue.

I was not aware of cable select being a liability, trying with Master&slave now :)

PSU should be ok then

I use winscp for running command windows and it allows better handling of the full dmesg output to copy etc.

Have you tried just creating an array with the 2 ide drives only maybe create two jbod single volumes on each drive and see if that survives the build/reboot, then delete and create a 2 drive volume etc.

If this works, but things go bad once the sata drives are mixed in, maybe this points to a conflict somewhere. Also I wonder if the different udma modes might somehow be involved with different drives types.

As an aside,  mask out the USB drives in your config, probably totally irrelevent, but another variable, seeing that the boot drive is being mounted I think.

winscp is much better than the telnet client, thanks for the advise!

I tried making single volumes on the IDE drives, and they're still dropped at boot. I tried pulling both PCI cards, re-enabling the onboard IDE, create two single volumes. Those are also lost if I reboot.

It seems the main problem may be that the PATA modules are not loaded yet at the point when it starts assembling the raid arrays. I've been loading the modules using a script called S05disks.sh in /usr/syno/etc/rc.d

I'll try renaming to S00disks.sh now assuming that the scripts are loaded alphabetically, and we'll see if that helps. There's also a feature in the bios to disable moving PCI adresses above the RAM. I'll try that as well.

How do I mask out the IDE drives? Is it in the same file that I enabled support for more than 12 drives?

If you a loading your pata modules with a script, you are probably correct that its not loading 'in time' before the array build starts. You could look at compiling your drivers directly into the 5.2 loader so they get installed/loaded 'at boot'.

Regarding drive numbers, as far as I know DSM orders drives based on bus numbering and resource allocation of controllers and an IDE drive is no different to a SATA when it comes to config so you edit synoinfo.conf as usual for your quantity (max = 24), 0x0ffffff etc
