One of the settings allows you to hibernate or put the hard drive in a sleep mode when not in use. Does one exist or can you create a status widget for the hard drive to indicate a couple aspects including whether it is in stand by or actively spinning. Why dont you enable hibernation logs in control panel, that way you have a record of spin down?
