How to build and inject missing drivers in jun loader 1.02a

IG-88

Recommended Posts

Ok just confirmed via mac address lookup that is it intel 82573V gigabyte lan. Bios also says enable/disable intel lan.

So why would this not load up in juns 1.02b LZMA version? I did not try 1.02a, Also Keep in mind I tried to replace the standard LZMA (because 1.02b changes the way the partitions are setup from 1.01). I tried to change the LZMA in 1.02b in the second partition on the USB by using AccessData FTK Imager. I could not use OSFMount because it could not lock the drive & thus save changes. I tried with admin rights also same results so I switched to using AccessData FTK Imager which loads all paritions at once and allows you to save each separately. Perhaps the way this was done could have corrupted the partition or something else but that seems odd since it loads the img fine & I tried it twice. I am on a windows 8 machine doing this but have access to OSX and a ubuntu mini install. The ubuntu I tend not to use because its so new to me.

Here are a few questions:

1. Do you have any tricks to using OSFmount?

2. Is 1.02a better to use then 1.02b?

3. Is there another driver LZMA I can try with 1.02b? I could not find any besides the HP 1 mentioned. When I tried to use the 1.01 version it of course did not work since its different kernel. I could not find any others except the one for the HP server n36l-n54l.zip but that does not include VIA_PATA but did include my Intel LAN. Its the only LZMA I am aware of outside the original included with juns loader which wont load my lan.

I hope this is clear IG-88, in my previous posts where I said realtek I meant INTEL.. THANKS FOR THE HELP AGAIN. I think I just need a new LZMA with VIA_PATA and the INTEL LAN. THE n36l-n54l.zip could be the base for this since it has the correct lan driver. I'm willing to try more testing of this again with your suggestions.

when loading the img file make sure to uncheck the read only!

the 1.02b image is definitely better and has more drivers included. you can't use older LZMA with this version

Ya I've been doing that its mentioned in Polanskiman guide.. The issue seems to be once the drive is mounted windows won't let anything lock the drive. So I am forced to abandon the changes. AccessData FTK Imager does not have this problem, but I was worried cuz using a different app sometimes has issues of its own. Thanks though..

you can also do it on OS X to edit the grub file using disk utility. open the img first and than mount it doing it this way you won't be able to do anything with LZMA but you can edit grub.

So it will mount the image and I can change things and re-save? Sweet ill give that a try..

1. Do you have any tricks to using OSFmount?

osfmount asks for elevated rights by itself to run with administrator rights

just open the image, selct 2nd partition, ok, unckeck read-only, ok and there is a additionl drive letter with the content /extra.lzma)

afair the same a writen in polanskimans howto

2. Is 1.02a better to use then 1.02b?

using 1.02b is better, it fixes a problem that after a major update (6.1 -> 6.1.1) with a complete pat file 1.02a did not load the drivers from the extra.lzma so the system was not working anymore

no need for 1.02a and 1.02b does only contain 2 additional driver compared with 1.02a the r8168 (realtek gigabit driver from realtek website, r8169 is the one delivered with the linux kernel) and mpt3sas.ko (for newer lsi 12Gbit controller?)

as the one for the hp systems is working for you i could repackage the extra.lma from this and put the pata_via driver in

you would just have to exchange the extra.lzma before creating the boot stick and of course using the old/fist 6.1 pat file (15047)

OK yeah I did that all correctly it just won't lock the drive and thus won't let me save the img. I think AccessData FTK Imager is working so ill stick with it or switch to disk utility on the mac.

I've tried to repack that LZMA myself but could not find the VIA_PATA.ko recompiled for the kernel in 6.1, so i'm stuck there. Do you have a link to an updated driver pack for 1.02b that has the VIA_PATA.ko?

Sure here is the link to my main board specs:

https://msi.com/Motherboard/945p_platinum.html#hero-overview

Its not a super popular board even at the time that I bought it. I wish I had gone with asus but its still working and I figured out a way to dual boot Xpenology and kodi. This xpenology box is my backup to my main 6TB NAS.. so its not turned on a lot. I run it via schedule.

Also IG-88.. When I was running DSM 6.0 I could not get proper shutdown/restart as soon as I get the driver for VIA working that will be my next thing to overcome, any ideas about that? Or could it be that DSM 6.1 will fix this? I had shutdown working in 5.2 but it did take some tweaking if I recall.

Will do, hope it loads.. thx much!

UPDATE: It did not load the VIA driver again. Same problem as 6.0.2? Any ideas?

I confirmed that AccessData FTK Imager saved the changes to the image. I used OSFmount to see that the extra.lzma and the grub.cfg were written correctly. Its something with the driver, it simply wont load. I get into DSM via find synology and it says no hard drives. The network driver is loading up though, so that's something.

as the network is running, can you have a look whats in the log why it does not work?

I know this is a dumb question, but where is the log? On the USB or inside DSM?

the log is in dsm (its the same as with every other linux, like debian or ubuntu) use putty, ssh session (maybe ssh has to be activates in dsm web gui, control panel, terminal & snmp) , in ssh session login with the admin account, "dmesg | grep -i via"

instead auf via you can serch for other words like usb, sda or eth0, depending what you are looking for

"dmesg | more" will list all and with space you can go page wise, strg-c if you want out before you reach the end

https://www.tecmint.com/dmesg-commands/

there should be something about pata_via as it's in the rc.modules were the "drivers" to load at boot are in

Sweet that makes sense, just like osx.

Just had an idea, could this be a driver ID issue? IE my chipset is not in the driver index and thus it wont ID it to load, ive seen that before in windows. Perhaps its happening here, thoughts?

Ill report back after I get into SSH of this box, trying to install DSM 6.1 now.

IG-88.. Here is the output. unknown symbol, could it be that it did not ID the hardware correctly?

UPDATE: Looks like the issue is also faced in Spanish section see:

module loads to late in the startup process, seems to be the issue.

with "pata_via: Unknown symbol syno_libata_index_get (err 0)" i was more thinking there is a problem between the running kernel and the module loaded, as both where compiled with the same source (15047)  it might be that sysnolgy modified some drivers (or driver classes) and others did not received that mod (because they never intended to use them), it might be possible to search in the kernel source for syno_libata_index_get but as i'm not a c++ coder there is not much i could do about it

ohh no, maybe Jun can help with this since it seems pretty high level.

beside i'm just guessing, pata drivers are not that importand, pata/ide drives have limited capaticy afaik the biggest drives ever produced had 750GB, most people use 2-4TB drives or evven bigger

I know its actually the controller I'm interested in because I have a few IDE drives but also sata to IDE adapters that allow me to use 1tb drives with this via raid controller. So I have 2x 650gb IDE drives and 2x 1tb drives that work with sata to IDE adapters on this via controller. The board also has 4 sata ports but they only support unto 500gb drives which is odd, since the via can handle larger drives with the sata to IDE adapter.

i would expect this to be a driver issue, did you try a >500GB drive on the sata with 6.1? if the sata's are detected and have a propper driver the i would expect them to work with drives bigger then 500GB

The problem is i have to many sata drives and just a few IDE, so the mix works we'll the way it is. If I was to move the 1tb drives to the sata controller id just end up with the 500gb drives on the IDE. So it really does not matter. This is my secondary nas, I have a newer machine that I expect better support on. This one is simply duplicate critical files for disaster recovery.
