G0ldr4k3 Posted January 19 #1 Posted January 19 Hello!! I have a baremetal machine with just arc loader and xpenology. It's a bit powerful computer and since I have 4 disks (currently working with usb boot) and a nvme drive (it's recognized but with limitations..example only read cache...) I would like to do this: 1 virtual machine with windows located in the nvme drive 2 half the drive for read/WRITE cache 3 boot from NVME is it possible? I currently using DS3622xs+ model.... is it correct for what I want' to do or not? my cpu is an intel i7 8700 with iGpu and usually I don't need transcoding...but sometimes could be needed, just to save bandwidth. I could buy some videocard (cheaper as possibile) and I would like to remain as free software as possible, I currently use emby but I'm not married to it.... the server's main goal is multimedia ...dream is access video and music from per various smart speakers but I don't know if it is possibile. thanks for every suggestions. Trabalhador Anonimo Posted January 19 #2 Posted January 19 I know that m-shell loader let you copy your USB to SSD and boot from there, but the other things i do not know. Quote
G0ldr4k3 Posted January 19 Author #3 Posted January 19 thanks for the answer. I am also open to proxmox or similar (free)...never used it but I can learn... Quote
blindspot Posted January 20 #4 Posted January 20 (edited) Hi. With proxmox you can have transcoding because you can passthrough gpu and other stuff like ssd, hdd, while in Windows with VirtualBox I don't think you can do that with gpu. Also you can install a gui and use pc in the same time for browsing, office etc. On my work pc I have installed a debian 12.5.0 netinst and then proxmox and a minimal gnome gui. It works very well from nvme drive Edited January 20 by blindspot Quote
G0ldr4k3 Posted February 18 Author #5 Posted February 18 this is not my only pc....I prefer a bare metal configuration. just for nas... but a virtual machine with windows could be good...for now the nvme has a ubuntu installation on it...just for playing with ollama...but in the future could be good have proxmox with windows, linux and xpenology ready to go....but I need to use it remotely. no keyboard or mouse are attached Quote

You can use the server configuration in the same way as mine (only replace ESXi with Proxmox if you are focusing only on free solutions): ESXi is installed on a 2Tb NVME disk, the BIOS is set to boot from this disk. All SATA drives (5 HDD + 1 SSD) are connected to a single SATA controller integrated in the motherboard and are intended for use only in the main DSM a VM has been created for the main DSM: the bootloader (Arc) is on a 1GB virtual disk. the SATA controller - passthrouth to the VM the iGPU - passthrouth to the VM USB port with connected UPS - passthrouth to the VM (ESXi is network-connected to a this UPS connected to DSM) As a result, DSM manages all SATA drives directly, just like in baremetal. ESXi and other VMs do not know anything about these disks and do not have access to them. All other virtual machines (Windows, auxiliary/test DSM and others) are created in ESXi using virtual disks hosted on the datastore (NVME) A discrete graphics card and a monitor, keyboard and mouse, WiFi and BT controller are connected (passthrouth) to one of the Windows virtual machines. This VM works like a regular PC. The free Jellyfin installed on the main DSM is used as a media server. Smart devices can be connected to DSM network folders or to a Windows virtual machine (for example, via bluetooth). Quote
G0ldr4k3 Posted March 9 Author #7 Posted March 9 it's very very interesting! just a question: how you create the 1gb virtual disk for ARC ? I installed an Nvidia 2060 card, can I use it for transcoding sometimes? essi and proxmox are definitely new for me... never used them! thank you Quote

G0ldr4k3 Posted March 11 Author #9 Posted March 11 I don't haver the license...I have to use proxmox.... Quote
