angel038 Posted July 11, 2024 #1 Posted July 11, 2024 Hi there, I actually have a Synology DSM under DSM 7.2.1 U5 with ArcLoader. This is setup in a Dell Optiplex 7010 configuration i customise to fit under a standard tower, its a i7-3700 with 16Go RAm. I will upgrade my setup in replacing the old Dell Optiplex 7010 with a Dell Optiplex 7050 motherboard to have a better configuration intel 7th gen processor, DDR4, nvme onboard. With this upgrade i wish migrate to Proxmox and build a Synology vm, but, is it possible to keep my data from my hard disks installed, if i mount my hard disks in proxmox in passthrough. Thanks Quote
Flasher Posted July 22, 2024 #2 Posted July 22, 2024 I would have the same question: what is the best process to migrate a bare metal installation to a proxmox VM, while retaining all of the data and settings. Quote
angel038 Posted July 22, 2024 Author #3 Posted July 22, 2024 I made the tricks, After install my proxmox server, i found a video explaining how to create a vm with arc loader, then, i mount my HDD in the vm and they were recognize by Synology DSM, i juste had to click on recover, my DSM work as it was in the original baremetal. The video for the vm is here: and to link my hard disk to the VM, i use this kind of command: qm set 100 -sata4 /dev/disk/by-id/ata-ST10000NE0008-2PL103_ZS5072LJ one command for each disk Quote
Depechie Posted January 8 #4 Posted January 8 Hey @angel038 I also have a proxmox setup with Arc loader in a VM. But now with loader version 1.4.* it is stated to change the bootimage... not sure how to do that with the proxmox setup. Do you have any pointers? Quote
shibby Posted January 9 #5 Posted January 9 (edited) @Depechie Your current bootloader image is attached as sata0, right? So detach it, download new version of arc loader, attach as sata0 (qm set ....), run VM, prepare new bootloader (select model, version etc) - all those steps are the same as a fresh install. After that open web browser, connect to you NAS IP. Wizard will detect DSM installed on drives and allow you to "migrate" without losing you data. Edited January 9 by shibby 1 Quote
Depechie Posted January 9 #6 Posted January 9 Great thx for the detail! Indeed the image is attached to sata0. Quote

If you are using Auxillium Arc Loader, you can install a companion app called Arc Control. Same will be available from Auxillium discord channel. You can do update of the loader from the Ar Control app. Very easy and simple. No need to touch the sata boot loader disk Quote
