Hi,

I’m getting a cheap optiplex from eBay with 8mb ram and 180gb ssd. Plan to get a 16tb disk and install DSM 7.2.1 with arc. From a balance point of view between compatibility, easiness and performance. Would it best to use bare metal, VMware under windows 10 or proxmox?

thanks

and why do you need virtualization?

In any case: using Windows + VMware + DSM is the worst solution. Well, 8Gb RAM is not enough for virtualization

Was thinking virtualization from simplicity. Windows are already installed and I was thinking it would be a simple solution to install VMware and test DSM. What would be the best solution?

Main usage is media storage and cloud backup.

use baremetal and the simplest bootloader - Arc.

If you want to protect yourself from data loss in case of a disk failure, then you need to use at least two disks for data (RAID SHR).
