Max no of HDDs in a Controller

Hello, i would like to know, besides the limitation on the platform choice.

Is there a limit of how many hdd s can be put in a controller.

I am thinking to use LSI 9400-16i but i read in the ARC Loader wiki that in a controller there can only be 8 drives.

Have anyone tried to put more than 8 drives in a HBA controller
