mazay Posted January 16, 2017 Share #1 Posted January 16, 2017 I'm going to build a computer with 3 hard drives for DSM 6.0. Is it better to take the motherboard with Raid and create RAID on MB or create RAID using the DSM and buy MB without RAID controller? 0 sbv3000 Posted January 16, 2017 Share #2 Posted January 16, 2017 DSM uses software raid so my understanding is that its generally better to have any mobo or add on controllers set to jbod/it/non-raid and let DSM do the rest. I've never done this myself, but if you have a hardware raid controller and create an array then I think DSM would see a single 'large disk' , which might be limited in capacity. Also, I'm not sure if XPE has 'raid hardware drivers' as opposed to 'chipset drivers' so if you create a hardware raid, you might not see any disks in DSM. Non-hardware raid also means its easier to move drives between hardware.
