yquzac Posted January 10, 2023 Share #1 Posted January 10, 2023 Hello, I am new to all this - I currently have an old Synology NAS - I recently purchased a HP GEN 8 with 16gb RAM paired with a Xeon E3 1220 . Now all was wondering if its worth running XPENOLOGY baremetal or in a Hypervisor. Many Thanks. yquzac
Orphée Posted January 10, 2023 Share #2 Posted January 10, 2023 (edited) It just depends on your needs. Will you need to run virtual machines ? If so, you may consider Proxmox VE or ESXi. if you don't need any virtual machines to run H24, you may go for baremetal. Both works fine as long as bios is configured as SATA AHCI.. Do not expect hardware transcoding with it, CPU is not compatible. You may want to use DS3622xs+ loader. yquzac Posted January 10, 2023 Author Share #3 Posted January 10, 2023 (edited) Thanks, just reading about fan noise etc and data speeds half in a vm , not sure if that still exists. No I have a dedicated gpu aswell. Thanks Just to add its E3 1220 v2 cpu Edited January 10, 2023 by yquzac

yquzac Posted January 11, 2023 Author Share #10 Posted January 11, 2023 (edited) This is my bench seems poor considering other results nemesis has. 358 Single-Core Score 1240 Multi-Core Score With the script that nemesis mentioned. It seems to only use around 15.45% of the CPU. 517MB of RAM is this normal? Using loader ARPL 1.03b Would running in a VM be better? Edited January 11, 2023 by yquzac No score
nemesis122 Posted January 11, 2023 Share #11 Posted January 11, 2023 How do you have startet this script in the task ....? I will test with my gen8 that has the original Xeon CPU the same as you
yquzac Posted January 11, 2023 Author Share #12 Posted January 11, 2023 Yes started the script as you've mentioned, ok thanks nemesis - is this the best loader to stick with ?
nemesis122 Posted January 11, 2023 Share #13 Posted January 11, 2023 (edited) for me in personal ARPL is the easiest way to install XPE and ARPL 1.03b is the last which is working for the gen8 in my experience form the arpl generation for me your result is not so bad pls note i have tested wit a xeon 1240v2 cpu in my gen8 this is not the orginal cpu it has much more power you can also test with Peters Mshell https://github.com/PeterSuh-Q3/tinycore-redpill/releases/tag/v0.9.3.0-1 here are other results with your cpu https://browser.geekbench.com/processors/intel-xeon-e3-1220l-v2 https://browser.geekbench.com/processors/intel-xeon-e3-1220l Edited January 11, 2023 by nemesis122 2
Orphée Posted January 11, 2023 Share #14 Posted January 11, 2023 (edited) I agree, don't expect to much performances with 1220L, as a reminder, it is a fanless CPU, made to stay cool temp... I replaced mine with a 1270 v2, but then you need to replace the fanless with a active fan system. with this : https://www.amazon.fr/gp/product/B08139CMZ5 in order to handle the CPU fan speed. I can't remember the radiator I bought, but it must be low/tight. Edit : it was a AKASA K25 AK-CC7118HP01 VENTIRAD Edited January 11, 2023 by Orphée
yquzac Posted January 11, 2023 Author Share #15 Posted January 11, 2023 (edited) Ok thank you everyone will look to replace CPU this weekend. Orphee what loader are you using I'm just new to all this and testing different loaders. Thanks Would there be any better off running in VM for better CPU score ? Just a thought Edited January 11, 2023 by yquzac Another question
Orphée Posted January 11, 2023 Share #16 Posted January 11, 2023 Everything has been already said here. If you don't NEED to run VMs, then stick to baremetal. Do you really think the need to reserve CPU and RAM for host while running only one VM will have better performances than running directly a baremetal ? I guess you did not really think about it and I must misunderstood it.... And I did not even talk about hypervisor security updates management...
