Volume damaged

jesss

Question

I´ve a Nas with DMS 5.2. with 4 disks in SHR.

After a accidental power faliure, at start it show NO Carpets, no any file. I can´t see any data of my 10 Tb !!!!

In Storage Manager/Volume says Volume1 Damaged, Status: Damaged; Capacity: 0 Bytes; Used: 0 Bytes; Available: 0 Bytes

But all the Disks (4x4 TB) are ok. I pass an E.S.M.A.R.T. test and says: Normal.

Disk 1,2,3 and 4 Status: Normal

I need help, please. Can I get my data back? How?

I know nothing about Linux, etc...

Thank you for the answer!

I´m not good with computers (I´m on my 60´s) and no idea about Linux. If this is the only way I´m afraid I would have to go it, but I see several problems:

I need to plug the 4 HHD in my PC + others empty HHDs to copy in the data, right?

If is like this I have not the empty HHDs and I´m afraid my mother board has not so many SATA connectors.

I was thinking that maybe there is a way to go in the Nas and "reactive" the volume without copy all the data in others HHDs...

Other question is that I have seen this:

https://www.synology.com/en-us/knowledg ... using_a_PC

Is this the same? looks easier...

You have to use a PC if you have your disks on a REAL synology NAS. If you have an xpenology, your disks are already in a PC, so all you have to do is follow the tutorial, create an Ubuntu boot USB flash drive and boot your xpenology from USB in Ubuntu. It is quite simple, even if you are in your 60s. Age does not make us dumb!!. The tutorial you link is very similar (more detailed and with pics), but you create an Ubuntu boot DVD and boot the PC with it. If you can do that better, go this way.

Thanks fjf!

Lets see if I understand you.

I have an Xpenology system in the nas.

So, do you mean I can boot the nas with a DVD (or USB stick I guess) with ubuntu ISO like they say to do in a PC?, and follow the steps of the link ( https://www.synology.com/en-us/knowledg ... using_a_PC )?

Just use the Nas like a PC. Then I have not to move the HHDs, only to plug some more to the Nas to copy the data there?

So, you already have a PC with the drives connected. Get an Ubuntu boot disk (DVD or USB flash drive, whatever you can), remove the flash drive you are using to boot xpenology, insert your Ubuntu boot disk and boot the PC. Then follow the tutorials and try to mount the RAID group; once you do that, you'll be able to read your files. Also, if you cannot read them, you should be able to run a fsck (file check) and try to repair it.

Go through it, take notes of the things you do and get screenshots of the computer response (https://help.ubuntu.com/stable/ubuntu-h ... ecord.html). If something does not work, come back here and show us what you did and what the computer answered IN EACH STEP you took. Then somebody with Ubuntu knowledge may be able to help you.

Finally, to avoid this kind of problem it is advisable to use an UPS: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Uninterru ... wer_supply

It seems the raid volume is damaged. Try the other tutorial?. If posting in an english forum, you should install the english Ubuntu; people will understand the pictures better.

I'll try the follow the other tutorial.

You are right with the language, but I installed in Spanish to make it not more difficult to me, then was done and I don't know if is it possible to change it to English without start all again from the beginning...

Is there anybody with Linux knowledge?

In the tuto i follow ( https://forum.synology.com/enu/viewtopi ... 6090ac5165 ) say that I have to use the app Disk Utility, But I can´t find it in Ubuntu 16, only Disk app but with that I can´t mount the volume.

Disk Utility was only in older Ubuntus or I´m doing something wrong?

Is there another app to mount the volume?

As I can not find the " “Multi-disk Devices” I can´t go on.

Thanks for any help!

I realize that "Disk Utility" now is "Disks".

I see the Volume "12 TB Block Device" /dev/vg 1000/lv

but I can't mount it. "Error mounting filesystem" >Error mounting /dev/dm-0 at/media/ubuntu/1.42.6-5644 command line ... missign codepage or helper program, or other error...

Any Idea/ Help?

You can try to run a file check with fsck (http://www.thegeekstuff.com/2012/08/fsck-command-examples/, using the terminal: https://help.ubuntu.com/community/UsingTheTerminal. I may be wrong, but simply "fsck /dev/vg 1000/lv" should do it. If administrator privileges are needed, add a "sudo" at the beginning and then input your password.

I am no expert. Do this at your own risk

Thanks fjf!!!!

I tried today again for lats trial before giving up, but this time it worked!

I test before with the comand you told me "fsck /dev/vg 1000/lv" and nothing change, but today I tried with "fsck /dev/vg1000/lv"

and then I could mount the volume and see all my data in their folders. Now I´m doing a copy of some of them to othes disk (but I have not more emty disks for the rest 9 TB!!!)

I wonder if can I start the Nas with Xpenology and then all will be there, or this is working only with Linux. Till I´m not sure I make nothing, now I can see and copy all the data!!
