Is xpenology a stable choice? why the hell synology doesn't makes a comercial version of their OS? It all boils down to what usage you will have of it. I can't comment on which particular VM is better but I think that if you virtualise the OS is because you are planning to have several other OSes running along although with 8Gb of RAM that might be pretty tight. By having the OS bare-metal you can natively take advantage of the available hardware. Personally I am running on a bare-metal and use Virtual BOX for testing purposes but other people use VMs as their primary machine and it works fine too. A google search will probably yield some answers as to the advantages of virtualisation, regardless of the OS your are virtualising. DSM is known to be stable and the reason they don't have a commercial version is probably the same as to why Apple doesn't commercial their OS to be used in other hardware platforms. Perhaps it's also because lots of DSM's OS is based on non commercial code (GNU) but that's just me hypothesising! Commercialising their OS would destroy their business model. Don't forget they are a hardware based company. Edited November 24, 2016 by Guest

Polanskiman Posted November 24, 2016 Share #4 Posted November 24, 2016 Does Virtualbox runs flawless on DSM? any caveats? i wanted to run two VM's one for DSM and one for Opnsense, with two NIC's pass-through I can't tell you that it runs flawlessly as I just use VBOX for testing purposes but so far all I have used it for works without a problem. VMWARE ESXI or Hyper-V might be more professional though. I'll let the pros chime in as I am not experience enough with VMs.
