DSM6 setup not finding drives on DSM 7

mgrobins

Question

I'm stumped. Have a system running Jun's DS3615xs loader just fine.

I use Bare metal installs.

I've attempted multiple configs of RP for DSM 7.1.0-42661 and continually get drive not found (When drive attached to LSI-9211-8i HBA) or it seems ok, reboots and doesn't recognise an install if I connect drive to SATA.

Hardware:
supermicro x10sdv-4c-tln2f   - Xeon D-1521 4 core (Broadwell); 2x intel-x550 10GBe NIC, 6x sata, 1x M.2 PCIE, 8GB ECC RAM. VGA onboard (not HDMI, old style VGA)

LSI 9211-8i  (IT mode)

using IPMI to connect.

Bios Questions and testing:

1. Should I use Legacy or EFI Bios setup?

2. M.2 is disabled in Bios

3. I have tried builds with SATA enabled and disabled.

Tiny Pill testing:

1. Have tried DS3622xs+ and DS3617XS

2. Loads ixgbe drivers for NICs

3. Loads mp3s (cant recall name :P) for LSI/SCSI

4. Does not appear to load a driver for the VGA (and I cant disable it without losing my IPMI KVM visibility)?

5. Broadwell produces a satamap finding 6 ports, DiskIDMap 0000

(1 drive connected when on sata, 0 when on HBA).

I have tested manually adjusting this to 0 with SATA disabled, 1 when enabled, 6 enabled.

I am NOT conversant with the DiskID. Will test next using 1000 following Flyride guidance in similar problem thread I found

 - should I test using theDS1621+ since it forms a tree automatically?

Build steps (and result):

./rploader.sh update now  (ok)
./rploader.sh fullupgrade   (ok)
./rploader.sh identifyusb    (ok)
./rploader.sh serialgen DS3622xs+ realmac (ok I think? - see ? below)

At this point I edited user_config.json to add additional MAC for 2nd NIC - is this necessary?

./rploader.sh satamap (
./rploader.sh build broadwellnk-7.1.0-42661

On install I am using Synology .pat  DSM 7.1.0-42661 (includes update 1).   The base 42661 install is "Virtual" and offers no hardware specific versions. I'm unsure if this is a problem with the version and Tiny pill?

I'm using IPMI. I am not sure how to access the serial output for checking activity as mentioned in a few threads I've read to seek solutions :).

THankful for any guidance and corrections! I'll post up the compile result when I do my next test run.

As expected, it seems that vanilla ixgbe and PeterSuh-Q3.ixgbe were conflicting with each other due to double registration.

I will show you how to manually add mpt3sas.

Use myv.sh instead of my.sh as shown below.

./myv.sh DS3622xs+ realmac nocelan manual

When asked if you want to add a driver, answer Y once

On the screen to select the number of exts

choose

41) mpt3sas

If you answer N once to the question of adding the driver again,
We will proceed with the process originally performed by my.sh.

Finally, I want to check the list where mpt3sas ext is added normally.

Send a capture of
ls -l *load/c*/e*

I'm now up and running :) ... at least with a test disk.

step 2 is to see if I can get this functioning with my sata ports active as I'll need them soon :)

New TC image onto USB.

SATA disabled on NAS

HBA present with 1 disk attached only.

./rploader.sh update

./rploader.sh fullupgrade

./myv.sh DS3622xs+ realmac noclean manual

select driver 41

NAS discoverable in Syno assistant. Lists itself as "migratable" which is a new change.

Currently installing DSM 7.1.0-42661

I think we cracked it Peter!

Looking at this now... if I get it working I need to determine how to do this with the SATA drives active too. :)

Does this present a bug present in the ./rploader.sh that may need addressing (finding and loading of mpt3sas not working properly)?

alrighty... I'm now running with my migrated drives and settings.

SATA ports are active and show up correctly.

Syno backup for business is registered and operating again.

My only issue to fix is the number of drives that show (12) on the storage GUI. It would be nice to see the full amount I can be using and current ones above "12".

What does a person need to do to the builder when updating DSM? eg to go from 7.1.0-42661-1  to  7.1.0-42661-4

Thank you for your persistence Peter. Much appreciated :)

Congratulations on your successful installation.
I'm happy too.

Models based on Broadwellnk platforms such as the DS3622xs+ with more than 12 bays
It seems to be about RS4021xs+ (16 bays).

Model transitions within the same Broadwellnk platform will follow the same ext and environment, so migration will be the smoothest.

However, there is still the issue of DSM's power warning issue related to the use of dual PSUs.
This part is being improved with fabio, the ARPL developer.

If you need 16 bays, consider using RS4021xs+ as well.

ok cool. For now I think I'll stick with DS3622 and have a break from messing around :D . I foresee going to the RS option though as a good choice. I noticed you have done it for your own build? :)

Reference the update to -4 ... do you mean that I just do the DSM update and no change is required for my USB, or do I run a build command again on the USB?

Is "postupdate" required still for any updates of the DSM version chain?

I think you should have a pinned tutorial for your myv.sh tool. It is an excellent optioned piece of work - thank you for creating it :).

The RS model was not made for me to use.
It was just confirmed as one of pocopico's config models and completed the build.

If only 7.1.0-42661 update 1 is used, postupdate is not needed.
However, if you want to change from update 2 to 4
You definitely need postupdate .

Otherwise, you will be faced with the DSM recovery screen over and over again.

How to process postupdate with m shell
See help with ,/my.sh .

There is already a guide for myv.sh .
However, it does not have a very detailed description.
