BunyaminS Posted September 15, 2016 Share #1 Posted September 15, 2016 (edited) Hi There, I was a proud owner of a Synology 216+, but the lack of power and the overpriced higher models pushed me to build my own NAS. Now I already have a new build in mind, but unfortunately I can't find some good advice on the MB and CPU in combination with XPenology(some Russian topics excluded). The only thread mentioning the MB H170i is: http://xpenology.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=2&t=18689&p=70144&hilit=h170#p70144 The base components for me will be: Intel Core i7-6700T 2.8GHz Quad-Core Processor (35 watt TDP) http://ark.intel.com/nl/products/88200/Intel-Core-i7-6700T-Processor-8M-Cache-up-to-3_60-GHzAsus H170I-PRO Mini ITX Motherboard (DDR4, M.2 and Dual gigabit support) https://www.asus.com/Motherboards/H170I-PRO/specifications/ My questions are regarding the SATA compatibility, my motherboard supports: 1 x SATA Express port, , Compatible with 2 x SATA 6.0 Gb/s ports1 x M.2 Socket 3, with M key, type 2242/2260/2280 storage devices support (both SATA & PCIE mode)4 x SATA 6Gb/s port(s) Q: Will the integrated M.2 storage be supported? Q: Will the SATA ports be compatible with XPENOLOGY. For the curious ones, this is my build (I already own the SATA drives) http://pcpartpicker.com/list/y3dTYr Thanks in advance for the time and answers!! thoughts/feedback on anything is appreciated. BunyaminS Posted September 16, 2016 Author Share #2 Posted September 16, 2016 Done a little bit more searching and found: http://xpenology.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=2&t=7564 Hopefully I can do a review after I install XPenology for those who want to buy the same chipset. mattail Posted September 16, 2016 Share #3 Posted September 16, 2016 I have the same CPU with an Asrock MB. Works well with xpenology. Can't comment on the SATA ports.
Toy Posted September 17, 2016 Share #4 Posted September 17, 2016 That's way too overkill for a NAS Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
BunyaminS Posted September 18, 2016 Author Share #5 Posted September 18, 2016 @Mattail, Good to hear that the CPU works well, didn't receive my product yet. Cant wait to get my hands on it @Toy, This will also be my media server. With 7 users streaming media (1080p/DTS and possible transcoding) via PLEX this will get the job done, furthermore I won't need to make any changes any time soon (HD Expanding excluded). BunyaminS Posted September 23, 2016 Author Share #6 Posted September 23, 2016 UPDATE: First I tried to run DSM 6.0.1-7393 to see how stable it was, my advise DON'T DO IT YET!!!!!! Ridiculous CPU burst, shifting interface, DLNA recognize (by smart TV's) not working. Now I installed version DSM 5.2-5967 and I am very impressed! Quickconnect - CPU Cores - Dual Ethernet (bonding) works like a charm, all SATA discs including M.2 (SSD) works great. an full HD 1080P + DTS streaming (with transcoding) uses +- 20% CPU, enough power to run all kind of extra things on the background!
