mat3 Posted August 10, 2016 #1 Posted August 10, 2016 I've successfully installed Xpenology DSM 5.2 in VMware 12. But when I create 3x10GB virtual drives and then create RAID5 Volume I only get 10,7 GB not 20 GB of useful space ? Any idea why ?
XPEH Posted August 10, 2016 #2 Posted August 10, 2016 10GB drives are way too small to be usable. DSM will take about 2GB from each drive for its own needs and some more for swap partition. On the larger drives it will be not as noticeable.
mat3 Posted August 11, 2016 Author #3 Posted August 11, 2016 I created them just for test. Now I've tried with 3x 500GB and I get 990,8 GB of RAID5. Looks like this is it. Thank you for you explanation.
XPEH Posted August 11, 2016 #4 Posted August 11, 2016 You are welcome. Now its more meaningful result. Other then an educational experience, there is no benefit to use DSM RAID inside VMWare with file based virtual drives. If RAID is required, create one on the host. Otherwise just use a single virtual drive per volume in your virtual DSM.
