what version did you install? and what about usb support , wol, hdd hibernate?

I have the n54l and i'm installing it right now.

if you could, that would be great.

thanks

Hi!

I'd also like to know how you got the hd's to spin down when idle as I've had no luck so far...

So, like the chap above, I'd like to know what version, extra libs etc you used..

Thanks!

Che

This is the DSM version i used. https://drive.google.com/folderview?id= ... sp=sharing

Here are the steps i used in my install, please let me know if it works. I will also try to duplicate my install on a different HD and usb stick to see if i can get everything working again. Also, i have only tested disk spindown without extra packages installed.

1. Change the Mac adress buy editing grub.conf located on the USB drive. viewtopic.php?f=2&t=910#p4226

2. Activate the WOL setting on your Ethernet adapter. viewtopic.php?f=2&t=665&p=3463&hilit=synoinfo.conf#p1919

3. Modify synoinfo.conf and replace S99ZZZ_Shutdown. viewtopic.php?f=2&t=665&p=3463&hilit=synoinfo.conf#p3312

4. Eject USB drive when system is booted. Disks should now spindown after preset time.

thanks man. that did the trick. i'm not sure what step 3 and 4 does?

is it for disk hibernation?

have your n54l froze with synology yet?

No problem, step 3 is for WOL. I mentioned step 4 because that is the only way i have been able to get the disk to spindown.

Morning gents

Massive thanks to the community for getting Syno on a ProLiant.

I bought a DS212j for testing purposes, fell in love with the OS so got the N54L on the promise of slapping DSM on.

Currently running 4.1 but about to put on 4.2 from https://drive.google.com/folderview?id= ... sp=sharing

Anyway, my question is not about how to put it on or unlock hardware features but instead the cloud based programs within.

I'd like to run DS Audio on my android phone but it looks like I need to register the Syno device in order to get a login ID. Is there away around this or is this the limitation of putting DSM on a Proliant?

If it's not possible, anyone recommend any alternative? I use Google Play at the moment but it lacks a "view by folder" category and I'm more of an explorer user rather than a library. Finding tracks via artists/albums is more of a struggle than by folder.

Thanks peeps.

Synology registration is free and convenient dynamic DNS service. You can use any other supported DDNS services instead to find your DS from the internet and forward appropriate ports on your home firewall.

I have a few questions - I've been trying to do the above but no luck.

How do you edit the file on the USB drive for step 1?

How do you add files for step 3?

As an alternative, you can run Plex Server on your Syno and port forward an open port on your router.

I'm streaming my entire Audio/Video collection flawlessly to all my mobile devices.

The easiest way is to use Winscp. You will have to login as root using the same password for the admin account

Hey,

I am glad to have You to ask for solutions to my fiddelings.

1. WOL on my new N54L worked right out of the box (4.2 - 3211 Microserver Version) but, after a while, lets say 30 minutes, I can't wake it anymore. Does anyone can give me a hint what is the matter here?

2. Opposite to my PC, my ESATA port does not work. I dont even get it as an internal port. Is that normal and has to be fixed by changing the port number?

Thanks a lot!!!

I've built a few boxes using N54Ls and so far they are working great!

However, I was just sent this link and I thought I should share:

Well , if anything looks to good to be true...

A few weeks ago I surfed past this site -http://www.xpenology.com-. I had an old WHS lying around, and well I like to tweak computers , so I gave it a try.

After some tweaking I found my old WHS was running as a real Synology NAS ;D ;D ;D ...

Nicely done I thought.....:gack:

Well you guys probably allready know where this is going...

It turned out I installed A gaping backdoor on to my network, and they got in....

I have no idea how long they have been looking around or what they did, but it scares me.

Pretty scary IF it's true but that's a big IF. This guy goes not say which build he's used. I've tried to get to the xpenology site to see if anything was posted there but it seems to be down.

Although it's pretty unlikely this is true, I thought that I should investigate/post all the same. I've checked my own firewall monitors for the last week. My two newest SynoloHacs x.x.x.190 and x.x.x.180 are not making may calls to the outside world. I would have expected more traffic if there was a problem but I've not yet tracked down all the places it's tried to reach.

I am not worried about this, I personally doubt there is a security issue with running DSM on non-syno hardware. I'd suspect that guy got hacked via some other unrelated method.

If there is some sort of trojan or root kit in this then we're all fcked  however, I keep a close eye on network traffic going into and out of my network and haven't seen anything that would cause me to worry. I don't expose any network ports from my HP N40L to the internet anyway. If it was root kitted (hey anything is possible!) then yeah I'm not likely to see anything dodgy using the tools on the box anyway.

For now I am going to continue enjoying DSM on my HP N40L! It is awesome.

Hi, is anyone using NFS exports on their N40? I tested with the VMware image and the NFS worked fine. On the N40, the exports show up but cannot be accessed. I've tried editing the exports file but still no joy-settings the same as the way I set up on the VM. The only difference is that I'm running the N40 DSM image instead of the generic one.

Can anyone help? Everything else is working perfectly.

Thanks in advance.

I am having the exact same problem. The NFS-shares show up in XBMC and on my Windows machine, but they are not accessible because of rights. I set up my NAS following this wiki.

When I ssh to my Apple TV with XBMC running:

atv@crystalbuntu:~$ sudo showmount -e 192.168.178.9
Export list for 192.168.178.9:
/volume1/video *
/volume1/photo *
/volume1/music *

All seems well..... But when I try to access it via XBMC, the log says the following:

I read on this forum this article, but no luck following those instructions. Is NFS just broken on the ported DSM on an HP N54L? Are more people having this issue?

I got it installed now with the 250GB HD but when I added another 2TG HD it won't let me format it!

Do I need to put the drives in before I install XPEnology (hope not)

thanks again.

Several USB keyboards have worked for me so I suspect keyboard support is pretty broad.

Thanks for the help.

I got it installed now with the 250GB HD but when I added another 2TG HD it won't let me format it!

Do I need to put the drives in before I install XPEnology (hope not)

thanks again.

You can add drives after the initial install.

Does the new drive show up in the BIOS messages during boot or in BIOS setup?

OK I got it to format and it says all is ok

I just put 60GB of files to test they are all there but in storage Monitor it says only 240MB has been used.

I must be doing something wrong but what it is I can't find out.

Got to do it from scratch and see that helps.

I am used to synology as I had a DS211j.

Ok using the files from here https://drive.google.com/folderview?id= ... sp=sharing it's up and running

Does any body know if I should install the 4.2 modules posted by Nighthawk?

thanks

I've got this running on my N40L and it works great other than a couple of issues.

  1. After installing Nighthawk's modules I lost the ability to see my USB printer that is connected to my N40L (worked fine before that).
  2. Installed Nighthawk's modules to get my USB UPS working, still can't see that.
  3. My SiL3132 PCIe eSATA card doesn't work

Otherwise, its working great. Flashed a hacked BIOS and I can use the 4 internal "hot swap" bays as well as a hot swap bay I have in the 5.25" bay. I still have 2 more HDDs I'd like to attach but I will be happy if I can get just one attached (they are in a Sans Digital PM eSATA tower).
