Remote access

Hi,

I have just installed XPEnology on a HP Microserver Gen 8 and am wishing to use the Synology mobile apps (e.g. DS Photo) to access the files on my NAS.

However, it is asking for a QuickConnect Id or an address.

What is the easiest method of gaining remote access - using 3rd party DDNS or obtaining a QuickConnect Id - which I presume will require reinstallation with a generated serial number and MAC address.

Thanks.

TBH the quickest (best) way in my opinion is to do the following.

1. Go register your own domain (so you own it....) costs about 10.00 a year

2. Modify your A record to to point from your IP address to your domain

3. Enter your domain name in, and it will reference your A record allowing you to connect without needing a 3rd party

4. .....

5. Profit!

This is what I've done, as I've elected to not run a DDNS or 3rd party tool.

**please note**

If you have a home internet connection you probably don't have a static IP. As a result you may need to adjust your IP manually every so often (mine is about once every 4 months, but YMMV). You could always pay for a static IP if your ISP allows for it.

Another option is to go with something like DynDNS (paid product) - http://dyn.com/dns/

That's why you use DDNS, so DSM actumatically updates your domain record, if you IP changes

If you go with this method, you also need to do port forwarding in case you are behind router.

You can use free services like:

https://www.changeip.com/ Good choice of domain names and no login required every X days to keep the account active. Their control panel takes a bit of getting used to as it's far from intuitive.

https://www.noip.com/

More options: https://smartdns.com/blog/60/5-best-free-ddns-providers/ and here are some more https://www.keycdn.com/blog/best-free-dns-hosting-providers/.

You don't need to use paid services like dyn.com!

OK, So I have used No-IP.com and set up a DDNS, configured the DDNS in DSM (External Access) and set port forwarding in my router (BT Homehub 5).

I am now able to access my photos using DS Photo from my mobile outside of the LAN, but when I try and use DS Audio to access my music outside of the LAN it fails giving "The DiskStation is no longer connected. Please login again"

It will connect if the mobile is connected to the LAN via Wi-Fi.

One thing I'm unsure of, is that I have not had to specify any port numbers in either DSM nor in the router.....is this correct?

I bought my domain from NameCheap.com, they support DDNS A record update, somebody wrote a DDNS update plugin for that and I've used it before, not bad.

Now I am using my router to do that DDNS update (pfSense), my previous router RouterBoard also supports a custom script to update it.
