Just been looking at this mobo for my new build here is a review http://www.servethehome.com/supermicro-x10sdv-tln4f-review-platform/

Not cheap by any means but looking to use as a plex / camera x 4 / VM server

 

Any comments would be appreciated: is it suitable or overkill for my requirements might drop the VM side.Do i go for a i5 or i7 build suggestions for my requirements much appreciated

Way too overpriced for what you get.

You can go socket 1150 with a relatively cheap bord.

I would suggest core i5 or better.

True, you come 2 ports short but you can solve that with a PCI-e sata / sas card.

I have that motherboard actually. If all you're going to use it for is for a nas/plex server, brantje is correct, its overpriced. I use mine for ESXi, and have Xpenology as a VM (passing HBA to VM using VT-d) My other VM's include plex, windows media center running MCE buddy, some test VM's, (Domain Controller/ DNS etc, minecraft server for the kids). If you wanna do a decent amount of virtualization, then this board's value proposition is signifant. (128GB of ram supported vs 16gb (on most ITX board, 32gb is supported by the platform itself, IPMI, 45 watt vs 85W on the core i5) also significantly higher passmark score - https://www.cpubenchmark.net/compare.ph ... 5B%5D=2507

 

Again, if all you're doing is running plex and camera's I wouldn't recommend it, unless your "VM Server" requirements have some VM's that actually require some decent CPU.

Thanks for both replies, i think you are both right i can get better for less, i was looking for a low thermal unit with plenty of sata ports, but was seeing units that lacked cpu grunt until the board i mentioned above but to many greenbacks. So i think the board you mentioned or similar with a pcie-16 sas-sata (LSI 9211) as mentioned else where. This unit seems to fit the bill, trouble finding a unit that has been flashed, might have to follow this tutorial https://linustechtips.com/main/topic/104425-flashing-an-lsi-9211-8i-raid-card-to-it-mode-for-zfssoftware-raid-tutorial/ although it does mention using specific hardware. any other info i need or is it a go?

Just buy a pre-flashed 9211 new on Ebay. They sell them pre-flashed in IT mode with the P19 firmware =)

 

Please also note that if you go with a socket 1150 board you'll need to use a really low profile cooler (the Noctua's are great for this)

Thanks Diverge, i have changed my build slightly as main board a bit expensive. Took redpineapples suggestion and ordered a standalone raid card and looking at the cooler he suggested as well. thx RP your knowledge has saved me loads of time.

I have the same motherboard and case. I run ESXI on mine, and have multiple VM's using the hardware.

How are your temps idle and under load with the nsc-800?

It's running ESXI w/ 2 VM's powered on right now. Xpenology, and WIN 7 for WMC.

 

ESXI is reporting CPU use @ ~225-250MHz, w/ an occasional spike to ~600MHz.. so basically the VM's are idling w/ little activity.

 

I started up a plex movie that was transcoding for a few minutes, and the CPU temp toggled between 60-61C.

 

edit: it's not a thorough test, but it's all I can do from work, teamviewing into desktop. Also, it's in my oil burner room, so the ambient in there is hotter than normal.

Thanks for the reply! I have the u nas nsc-800 and have a chance to purchase the d-1540 board at a great price but was concerned about heat issues with such a small enclosure. Sounds like it would be just fine with proper cooling.

 

Did you repace the case fans or do any other upgrades to help with cooling?

I think I'm using the 2 stock exhaust fans. But have a noctua fan on my CPU. I forget the details offhand, I know I posted them somewhere but can't find them.

 

The temps might run a little high under extreme loads, but it's nothing the cpu and board can't handle. I also have a linux VM in there, and have compiled android without any overheating issues (nothing shut down).

I made an home server and lab with this hardware 6 months ago. I use Esxi with 4 vm (2 linux, 1 windows and a synology). I have 6 HD in raid 1. I bought a U-NAS NSC-800 for the box and a Raid card LSI like Diverge. The motherboard has a small fan. I have no heal hardware issue. The temp of the cpu is arorund 55°C, Hard drives : 34-39°C.

It's a great hardware this motherboard works like a charm 24h/24 !!

That's an awesome product to be used for virtualization and currently I'm trying to buy 3 of them to lifecycle my homelab but they're quite pricey.

I definitively consider this an overkill for XPEnology and don't recommend it unless you're filthy rich :lol: or actually use it for more than a NAS VM

A full Lenovo TD340 server Quad core Xeon with 8 hot swap bay RAID was just $1000 (i just picked one up back on Feb for a VMware server.)

 

This supermicro motheboard board cost almost the same as a fully funtional server you just need to unbox and power on.

You're comparing apples with pineapples.

The lenovo server does not have 10G networking and the processors are not even closer to 45W TDP.

Remote console (iLO/BMC) is also not included.

And this motherboard is actually a mini-ITX, so it will fit a case 2 to 3 times smaller than the lenovo server.

Price paid is relative to quality; what's available; what you want; and funds available.

My recent build (replacing a Synology DS1513+) used a Supermicro M'brd with Intel Xeon E3-1241v3 LGA1150 CPU.

System has ran flawlessly from day one. Automatically downloading TV shows, etc and providing home backup for all local PCs.

Why not have a look at responses to "What Hardware are you using" forum to get a look at a good spread of system configs.
