ilciumbia Posted April 5, 2016 #1 Posted April 5, 2016 Hello, I hope I am not asking an already discussed question, but I could not find an answer. If I setup a new XPENology NAS, can I add disks with data already present on them but not belonging to Synology NAS (i.e. an ordinary NTFS formatted HD) or do I have to start with clean disks (or format them)? Thanks!
cstout Posted April 5, 2016 #2 Posted April 5, 2016 Hi there, You can add them to the system but they won't be readable for data transfer. You will be prompted upon volume creation to erase all data on the disks installed. If you're looking to migrate data from single disks to your new RAID volume I'd recommend using a USB/eSATA enclosure to transfer data from the individual drives to the new RAID volume. Then, once transferred, you can add your drives into the NAS and expand your volume. Posted via Xpenology.us
ilciumbia Posted April 5, 2016 Author #3 Posted April 5, 2016 Haha! I thought so... Well, some extra work to be done then, but probably worth it... Thank you very much!
