trek102 Posted December 8, 2021 #1 Posted December 8, 2021 Is it possible after installing 6.2.23739 via USB stick and 2 HDs, to remove the USB stick? Does Xpenology need the USB stick inserted after booting? Quote
Pandadoo Posted December 8, 2021 #2 Posted December 8, 2021 Once DSM started, no you don't need to keep usb stick anymore because DSM is installed on hard drive(s) in the meantime, I think it's a bad idea to remove it since starting on DSM require a Synology valid serial number which is provided by the USB stick. If you reboot your PC, NAS or wathever, that will not boot on DSM. Quote
trek102 Posted December 8, 2021 Author #3 Posted December 8, 2021 ok. So USB can be removed for ongoing operation but need to insert for rebooting? Quote
Pandadoo Posted December 8, 2021 #4 Posted December 8, 2021 Exactly, it's required only to boot on it at startup. Nothing more. 1 Quote
flyride Posted December 9, 2021 #5 Posted December 9, 2021 FWIW, it IS required whenever a DSM update operation occurs and is modified by the update. From the perspective of a Synology ecosystem, it is expected to be present as it cannot be removed on a real Synology box. Quote
trek102 Posted December 9, 2021 Author #6 Posted December 9, 2021 ok thanks for pointing this out. But on an Xpenology there are not update operations so I'd expect this to run without Quote

Also there really isn’t a valid reason to remove it. Quote
