nounours18200 Posted November 24, 2021 Share #1 Posted November 24, 2021 I used the latest version of Download Station (3.8.16-3566) under DSM 6.2.4-25556 Update 2. My problem is that Download Station (DS) does not use my VPN, and consequently presents my real IP address on the Internet. The VPN is NordVPN and I have created the VPN profile by using the ".ovpn" file import method. When I select the VPN profile and click on "Connect", there is no problem and the connexion is established. I have checked the dialog box "use the default gateway on distant network" and I have disable IPv6. But back to DS, the IP address shown in the "Tracker" tab is my real address , it is not hidden by the VPN. What can I do ? Thank you very much for your help,
billat29 Posted November 24, 2021 Share #2 Posted November 24, 2021 If you check Control Panel>General, the address under "Default Gateway" should not be one on your local network. It may say (VPN) after it. Preferred DNS server should also be an address on the VPN network above not on your LAN. When you go to Network Interface you see an entry for the VPN with connected time, IP address on the VPN network and values for both bytes sent and received. If you are not getting that, then the connection is either not being established with the VPN server (not logging in?) and/or you have some parameters wrong. I use another VPN and it was a long long time ago, but I think I just used the Create>create VPN profile under Network Interface to set up my connection and it just worked. Thank you very much for your help, This was one of the main reasons i dumped DS, because there was no way to flow DS traffic solely to the VPN. One solution could be install a virtual instance of DSM to just have DS be behind a VPN or Docker! There are great torrent containers available that you can use your VPN with and not boggle down the rest of the services that depend on internet in DSM. nounours18200 Posted November 25, 2021 Author Share #4 Posted November 25, 2021 (edited) Citation This was one of the main reasons i dumped DS, because there was no way to flow DS traffic solely to the VPN No: persons are succesfully using a VPN with Download Station, so it is possible @ billat29: Citation If you check Control Panel>General, the address under "Default Gateway" should not be one on your local network. It may say (VPN) after it. Yes it looks OK, here are the values I have: Panel->General->Default Gateway: 10.8.1.1 (VPN) Citation When you go to Network Interface you see an entry for the VPN with connected time, IP address on the VPN network and values for both bytes sent and received. It looks also OK, here are the values I get, Control Panel->Network->Netwok Interface: VPN-NordVPN connected, Connection time: .... IP adress: 10.8.1.7 Gateway: 10.8.1.1 Now back to Download Station, I use a the following permanent download link to know the IP address exposed by the NAS: http://ipmagnet.services.cbcdn.com Tracker Tab, I get: URL Status http://ipmagnet.services.cbcdn.com IP: 194.127.172.80 If I go to https://mon-ip.io in order to know my public address I get: 86.241.144.201 If I go to http://ipmagnet.services.cbcdn.com I get: FYI, the address you've accessed this page with is 2a01:cb1c:8072:fc00:d5:b227:724d:61a9 which looks like a IPv6, so I don't know if I am protected by the VPN or not ????? billat29 Posted November 25, 2021 Share #5 Posted November 25, 2021 I am pretty sure that it is working as you want. When you say "If I go to https://blah blah" don't you mean that you did this on a browser on your PC? And unless you think you have routed your PC through DSM acting as a gateway, it will show your public, non-VPN IP address because that is the route the PC will take. I went to those addresses and that is what I found too. However, when I copied the magnet link to create a download task for DS, then I got the correct VPN address shown. nounours18200 Posted November 25, 2021 Author Share #6 Posted November 25, 2021 (edited) Citation When you say "If I go to https://blah blah" don't you mean that you did this on a browser on your PC? When I go to https://mon-ip.io, yes I enter this in my PC brower When I go to http://ipmagnet.services.cbcdn.com , I also do this from my browser PC, but I don't know if the displayed address (2a01:cb1c:8072:fc00:d5:b227:724d:61a9) is my real IP or not, because it looks like an IPv6 address ! I also believe that you are right (it seems to work), but I must be sure: is there a way to know the IP address that the NAS shows when it is downloading ?? at least if I could know the Country of the IP address, then I could be sure that it goes through the VPN, because the NordVPN server is located in the Netherlands. billat29 Posted November 25, 2021 Share #7 Posted November 25, 2021 (edited) First of all it is definitely working. You also turned IPV6 off on your NAS so we can feel confident that any network access your NAS makes is going through your VPN using IPV4. In the posts above, the external IP of the NAS is 194.127.172.80 which if you look up on one the" find my IP" sites turns out to be in the NL. You leave the download entry in DS permanently. It never downloads anything and when you look at the tracker entry it will give the then current external IP address of the NAS. This may change slightly. But if it changes to look like the address that your ISP gives you (86.241.144.201 in this case) then there is something wrong with the VPN connection. All the information on IP addresses that you have found while browsing from your PC say great things about the external address of your PC (or rather your router) - not the NAS. As your PC is not connected via the VPN it will always show your local connection to your ISP as that is what it is using. And 2a01:cb1c:8072:fc00:d5:b227:724d:61a9 is "real" as it is the address of your PC (not your router) on the external internet. nounours18200 Posted November 26, 2021 Author Share #8 Posted November 26, 2021 Citation First of all it is definitely working. Very good Citation In the posts above, the external IP of the NAS is 194.127.172.80 which if you look up on one the" find my IP" sites turns out to be in the NL. True (I went to such sites, and I also saw Netherlands) Citation And 2a01:cb1c:8072:fc00:d5:b227:724d:61a9 is "real" as it is the address of your PC (not your router) on the external internet. How can we compare this IPv6 address: 2a01:cb1c:8072:fc00:d5:b227:724d:61a9 with an IPv4 adress like: 86.241.144.201 ? Thank you very for the help you have already provided me with... billat29 Posted November 26, 2021 Share #9 Posted November 26, 2021 I think if you have got to this point then you can either say "It works!" and move on to something else or if you are keen to understand a little more, then it is time to look for some network primer articles which will do a much better job of explaining all this than I could.
