asheenlevrai Posted August 3, 2021 Share #1 Posted August 3, 2021 Hi Is it possible to migrate an install running 1.03b (3617xs), DSM 6.2.3, onto a new rig that is compatible with 1.04b (918+)? Or do I need to setup DSM 6.2.3 on the the 918+ and then copy the data from the 3617xs? (I don't have the required disks available...) Both current and future CPUs have not more than 8 threads. Thank you very much in advance for your feedback. Best, -a-
flyride Posted August 3, 2021 Share #2 Posted August 3, 2021 Yes, if you boot with a fresh loader, you will be asked to migrate install and DSM will be overwritten, along with any non-GUI customizations you made to the root structures. 1 hour ago, asheenlevrai said: I don't have the required disks available... This implies you would be doing this without a backup, if that is true it is a Bad Idea. An installation error can easily overwrite your array (at worst) or have to repeat the install because of a compatibility/configuration problem (at best).

I understand your point and you are perfectly right. Thank you for the heads up In my case, the disks contain the backup from another DS. Thus loosing the backup data during migration would be inconvenient but not necessarily dramatic since the original data are present on the other DS. Thanks a lot -a-

I have no idea what this means. I guess this means I didn't do any such customization.
flyride Posted August 4, 2021 Share #5 Posted August 4, 2021 When you install DSM, it goes to the base filesystem (anything that is not in a /volumeX tree). Any modifications you make to that filesystem are overwritten clean in a migration install, aside from the DSM settings in the GUI that are copied.
