RedPill - the new loader for 6.2.4 - Discussion

Did you think itt can work with a i7-8700 or i5-8500t ? Cannot test right know, but 8th gen is older than geminilake so...

the driver in all the  4.4 kernel source based system is the same, synology introduced the driver in 6.2.3 for 920+

we have some results and listing whats supported here

https://xpenology.com/forum/topic/28321-driver-extension-jun-103b104b-for-dsm623-for-918-3615xs-3617xs/

8th gen should work ootb with the driver synology delivers, up to 10th is partly proven with a patched driver and i just released new testing drivefor all cpu's up to 12th gen (code still the same, the id's are just mapped to the latest code in the old driver synology has)

if they release a jasper or elkhard lake system with intel qsv support (like a 922+?) then they will have to use a more recent i915 driver and we will presumable be able to have much better cpu support with that one

Understood. Thx for explaination. Basic img (without any driver) works with 918+ img on my baremetal (i7-8700). Not working with the same img 920+.

That's my previous question. You cannot use a cpu older than Haswell to be working with 918+. I was thinking that's the same thing with Geminilake. I cannot have serial port on this baremetal, cannot see what's not working

cant say much about something that was introduces in a development tree just a week ago, dont expect anything to work in that state - remind the forum branch we are in - dev-corner, imho there is no reason to even have a 920+ now, nothing new or extra with that

one of the reasons it might not work could be i915 firmware, in dsm there is only whats needed for that specific hardware, the driver in dsm has the capabilities but only when the firmware is also present, you could test that with the firmware i have in this (dont use the driver, just copy the firmware to you system and reboot)

https://xpenology.com/forum/topic/48743-drivers-extension-for-redpill-request-for-comments-drivers-packages/?do=findComment&comment=268029

or you can extract the firmware from the extra.lzma i made for 6.2.3

not tested but i would expect it to be that way, you can read about that limit here

https://xpenology.com/forum/topic/13333-tutorialreference-6x-loaders-and-platforms/

"...

** FMA3 instruction support required. All Haswell Core processors or later support it.  Only a select few Pentium, and no Celeron CPUs do.

** Piledriver is believed to be the minimum AMD CPU architecture to support the DS916+ and DS918+ DSM platforms.

that depends on the hardware you use, if you have a pcie slot free you could (as long as its with kernel 4.4 like 918+ on 6.2 or 3617/918+ on 7.0)

WCH CH382 based card should work as comport in dsm (i have not tested that with 7.0 but i dont see a reason why it should have changed)

https://xpenology.com/forum/topic/36505-serial-port-com1-stages-of-operation/

can still be bought cheap for 10-15 bugs

A minor question about DSM 7 (since I'm not sure anywhere else on forum fits). I want to plug in USB UPS.

Yes, I know Synology dropped USB support. I've tried a couple ways to enable some USB devices, but apparently they are for wireless dongles only. Or something. As lsusb shows only loader flash.

|__usb1 1d6b:0002:0310 09 2.00 480MBit/s 0mA 1IF (ehci_hcd 0000:00:12.2) hub
|__usb2 1d6b:0002:0310 09 2.00 480MBit/s 0mA 1IF (ehci_hcd 0000:00:13.2) hub
  |__2-3 f400:f400:1100 00 2.00 480MBit/s 500mA 1IF (HP v165w AA00000000006633)
|__usb3 1d6b:0002:0310 09 2.00 480MBit/s 0mA 1IF (ehci_hcd 0000:00:16.2) hub

How would I check what drivers I need? Running baremetal N54L.

That, of course, if Synology hasn't dropped generic USB UPS protocol as well...

I installed the DSM 7 (DS918+ 7.0.1-42218 Update 2) on my baremetal on my ASROCK N3150ITX via the tiny core loader

and have nearly the same errors as Amoureux on post post.

Now I'm building up the know-how to be able to deal with the problems.

At the moment I can't judge whether I might have to integrate special drivers using an extension.

I'm also having a hard time assessing the impact of these errors.

What options do I have to fix these errors?

Well, Powercom isn't in supported list, though again, not sure if that's the cause. It was working in 6.2.3, you see.

Maybe I somehow misconfigured USB ports...

Disregard all that, looks like UPS USB controller is fried.

hi, i installed dsm 7.0.1-42218 on esxi.

the only issue that i have so far is that its not detecting the sfp+ card. on 6.2.3-25426 it was working.

also do you know if i can upgrade the 6.2.3 to 7.0.1?

thanks

If you read/search on this post, I can confirm you that you can upgrade easily from 6.2.3 to 7.0.1. Please make a backup first, as always. The upgrade is simple, and works fine (tested on 5 xpenology in production --> upgrade from jun's loader 1.04b/1.03b).

For sfp+, what's your card reference? You can use extension from @pocopico. Just give me the reference of your card, and I will told you which driver used.

If you build a new Xpenology img file with Tossp's redpill-tool-chain, you don't need to install Ubuntu separately.

If you only have the existing Xpenology installed, you can go to SSH and use it as below.

All you need to do is install the docker package in advance in the Xpenology. (docker demon)

It's the basic package of the package center, so just install it.

And, I tried to run it right away without going into root authority, but I just got Help as below.

You don't need to install jq either.

You don't need to set the chmod +x execution authority of redpill-tool-chain.sh

Root account access is required with the sudo su or sudo -i command.

Please add the LAN or HBA card driver you need as the guide.

Just build and auto, and that's it.

platform_user_config.json is created as an editor, so you have to look at the separate hand.

The case below used DS3622xxs+ broadwellnk_user_config.json.

If I use it well, I think I can use it as easily as TINYCORE.

Linux Ubuntu was installed separately, docker environment was established, and it became very easy.

Is it the first thing I found right?

admin@NAS5:/volume1/_REDPILL/redpill-tool-chain-master$ ./redpill_tool_chain.sh

Usage: ./redpill_tool_chain.sh

Actions: build, auto, run, clean

- build:    Build the toolchain image for the specified platform version.

- auto:     Starts the toolchain container using the previosuly build toolchain image for the specified platform.

Updates redpill sources and builds the bootloader image automaticaly. Will end the container once done.

- run:      Starts the toolchain container using the previously built toolchain image for the specified platform.

            Interactive Bash terminal.

- clean:    Removes old (=dangling) images and the build cache for a platform version.

Use ‘all’ as platform version to remove images and build caches for all platform versions.

- add:      To install extension you need to know its index file location and nothing more.

            eg: add 'https://example.com/some-extension/rpext-index.json'

- del:      To remove an already installed extension you need to know its ID.

            eg: del 'example_dev.some_extension'
