RedPill - the new loader for 6.2.4 - Discussion

Recommended Posts

Uuuuiii, sophisticated ... you know any documents to do that way?
You can read about it in this thread, look at last page for some info on doing it this way.

https://xpenology.com/forum/topic/13342-nvme-cache-support/

The simpler way is of course running DSM under Hypervisor/virtualized and then just setup a virtual disk on the NVMe storage as DSM will then just see this as a normal SATA or SAS SSD.

what is the issue you are facing ? You can use tinycore redpill for the loader creation. I have included @buggy25200 3617xs loader.

I use it! :) ds3615xs rocks all is green but ds3617xs looking for dpkg and tinylinux not have it? If i edit /home/tc/redpill-load/include/runtime.sh and remove dpkg all is green after this and create bootable usb with 3617xs(beta), boot usb found in find.synology.com but pat file is always corrupted ?

Greets,

Gorski

Virtual or physical ?

For virtual you can use sata boot entry while on GRUB

For physical, you can run the following prior building the loader.

./rploader.sh identifyusb now

Now TinyCore did on Baremetal a lot to get this done.

This time I had may Drives (8x with lots of Data) Plugged off and leaved 2 SSDs on one of my HBA´s.

The Search finds a 3615XS, but no drives. MPT3 extension is added...

...LSI 2008 IT Mode...strange thing.

Anyone here got the HBA working here?  Mine shows as Fusion MPT2 2008 8-Port

If=yes --> HOW???

LSPCI ESXi.rtf 5.33 kB · 3 downloads

@pocopico does your Extension work with the provided Device IDs?

I have the same problem. mpt3sas is loaded but hba card not if i am not mistaken:

@myswe I understand the sequence of commands went over your head.

The sole purpose of the commands is to make it easy for every Proxmox user to download tinycore and create a proxmox vm that uses the img-file as  usb-boot. The usb-boot configuration is NOT visible in the ui and can not be configured or changed from the ui.  But you can see the "real" configuration in /etc/pve/nodes/${nodename}/qemu-server/${id}.conf (at least that's the location in my 3 node Proxmox cluster).

This part is responsible to do so (only works if the sequence of commands I pasted, otherwise the variable ${id} will be empty: `

--args "-device 'qemu-xhci,addr=0x18' -drive 'id=synoboot,file=/var/lib/vz/images/${id}/tinycore-redpill.img,if=none,format=raw' -device 'usb-storage,drive=synoboot'" \`

Please throw away the created vm with all your customizations, and the hdd and re-execute the sequence of commands.

This time start the vm without changes, generate serial and mac, compare the created user_config.json with what I wrote above and then build your configuration. You will see that it works ootb.

There is no need to guess or do random things without understanding why they would be necessary or understanding the impact of your changes.

Please do not skip or modify parts of the command sequence you don't understand.

@haydibe I followed your instructions 1:1 making absolutely no changes but when I start the VM I end up in a boot loop with the VM not seeing a boot-able device

at the boot screen press "esc" and select the USB device... also you can add to the VM settings args 'bootindex=number' .. where the number is your virtual boot USB..

Virtual or physical ?

For virtual you can use sata boot entry while on GRUB

For physical, you can run the following prior building the loader.

./rploader.sh identifyusb now

baremetal

all is clean here

i do

./rploader.sh identifyusb broadwell-7.0.1-42218

./rploader.sh satamap broadwell-7.0.1-42218

./rploader.sh serialgen DS3617xs

and confirm to add to user_config.json

after this

./rploader.sh ext broadwell-7.0.1-42218 auto

and here get error for dpkg

edit runtime.sh

and do again

./rploader.sh ext broadwell-7.0.1-42218 auto

without errors

./rploader.sh build broadwell-7.0.1-42218

download *.pat file from cache dir on redpill-load and reboot

booting well

find loader for 3617xs in find.sinology.com

use downloaded pat file and get error

what is this with missing dpkg ?

My bad, I accidently removed the bootindex setting, which is required to actualy boot from the usb disk. It is present in the link of my signature, but not in the "updated" command sequence I posted earlier.

I have testet the ds3617xs with Redpill Tinycore on Proxmox and the face recognition works with generated serial and mac. You don't need to use your real serial and mac.

With the ds3617xs the Update 1 and Update 2 don't work. And ACPI doesn't work too.

I have also tested ds918+ and ds3615xs. With these the Update 1 and Update 2 works good. ACPI works only with yjimmyGALLAND rp-ext, not with jumkeys.

Success! Thank you very much for your patience with me.

I have been able to spin up a ds3615xs and will now try alternative versions to start testing backups between my real synology's and the vms's.
Thank you again!

Now TinyCore did on Baremetal a lot to get this done.

Anyone here got the HBA working here?  Mine shows as Fusion MPT2 2008 8-Port

@pocopico does your Extension work with the provided Device IDs?

@Kaneske I believe mpt3 is for LSI sas 3 controllers which is what I have yours is an older card I believe.

Sadly agree @Unregistrado.. tried mpt2.ko too without Luck.

Maybe our device ID´s help implement them to the one that runs other Cards flawlessly.

Just want my Sys be able to get on 7.x.x since it is backed up properly in 3-2-1 scheme.

Let´s wait if @pocopico maybe finds Time for a quick look on it.

Hopefully...with a big Thanks in Advance an a nice Bling Bling ;-)

Hi,

@dodo-dk

Citation

I have testet the ds3617xs with Redpill Tinycore on Proxmox and the face recognition works with generated serial and mac. You don't need to use your real serial and mac.

With the ds3617xs the Update 1 and Update 2 don't work. And ACPI doesn't work too.

I have also tested ds918+ and ds3615xs. With these the Update 1 and Update 2 works good. ACPI works only with yjimmyGALLAND rp-ext, not with jumkeys.

  Exact !

Be carreful do not update ds3617xs to DSM 7.0.1-42218 Update 1 or 2 without reading this more,

update.thumb.png.d07e203c97d0f1f7b6fd8842a895689f.png

There is a new zimage and rd, you can see the pat size is more weight than ds3615xs or 918+

synology_broadwell_3617xs.pat    26.98MB
synology_bromolow_3615xs.pat    10.10MB
synology_apollolake_918+.pat    10.53MB

And there is a problem (a problem for futur ?!)

A priori, the new pat file on synology download site are no longer gz type archive! And so they are no longer usable by our current scripts.
It is possible that all pat files will be distributed in this new format.

I have prepared the bsp for update 2, you can up to update 2 without going through update 1.

But to be able to use it, you will have to produce a PAT file yourself!

WHAT ?! 😢
And this as long as we do not have a tool allowing extraction of these pat files with a script.

I cannot provide you the PAT file i made, because it contains proprietary data.

In order to produce your PAT file, here is a procedure to follow:

Prerequisites
You must have a machine with a ds3617xs 701 already install, on the LAN, and with a serial connection capability. (A virtual machine is the best choice)
And another machine to receive the PAT file (with ssh server un this procedure).

Launch a manual migration to update 2 from GUI DSM 7.0.1.

After the reboot which will fail!

Connect to the serial port

You can see why it didn't work...

DiskStation> cat /var/log/junior_reason
Exit on error [7] root not matched with junior...

Which means that your bootloader is no longer usable with the current version.

DiskStation> mkdir /root/tmproot
DiskStation> mount /dev/md0 /root/tmproot/
DiskStation> mount /dev /root/tmproot/dev
DiskStation> chroot /root/tmproot /bin/bash
DiskStation> chroot /root/tmproot /bin/bash
bash-4.4# cd /.syno/patch
bash-4.4# tar -zcvf mypat.pat *
bash-4.4# scp mypat.pat  yourlogin@ipremotemachine:~

Here you have your PAT file !

In this tutorial I work with the rp-helper tool but you can use what you prefer.

Put your PAT file in the cache download directory so that it can be used without downloading synology's one, or host your file on a server and modify the pat_url!

Add in your global_config.json

Thank you very much @buggy25200

I have updated DS3617xs to Update 2 too with your howto, it works.

Only the ACPI - Powerbutton shutdown doesn't work.

When I start the script /etc/acpi/powerbtn.sh in DSM it shuts down, but from Proxmox it doesn't.

On DS3615xs and DS918+ it works.

@Unregistrado might want to do an lspci -nnu > lspci.txt in tinycore shell, and post lspci.txt file on here @pocopico and see if they can point you in the right direction.

@pocopico or anyone else with knowledge, I have used a tutorial to figure out how to recompile the drivers for 3617xs broadwell, I used the version 7 toolchain. So now I have a directory full of .ko and some firmware files for my broadcom nics I see how to install them with normal synoboot image, but how do I insert the newly compiled drivers into tinycore redpill. Also if the vid:pid need to be changed to match my nics in driver how would I go about doing that?  It seems that the drivers are in a file format on tiny pill that has a .bsp extention, tho that may be incorrect.  Thanks in advance

Hi,

You would have to create an extension so it can be added to the redpill loader. Instructions are on the developer readme section on the redpill GH repo.

Before you create an extension with these modules, i suggest you first try each and every one to see if they load and unload succesfully.

Sorry, i think i lost this message... What is the issue ?

Pocopico thank you very much for your effort and time.

What could we be doing wrong? Because I retried when the mpt3sas was updated to version 22.0.
