Mine is i5-4570 with asus b85, works perfectly from 6.2.3 to 7.0.1

only packages not compatible with newer dsm, just let it fix.

seems all function works perfectly without any data lost.

if i use bromolow version's loader which complied from my computer, it wont boot, no ip address.

 but using @tocinillo2's loader it works fine.

- Add UEFI support.
- Deleted twice EFI folder.

Good call! It's so long since I did a fresh install of xpenology I'd forgotten all about that. I set mine to conservative, fwiw, as this box does some Plex transcoding from time to time.

Trying to build and run it on my HP Gen8.

I first built redpill.ko using redpill-lkm, that was quite easy.

For the record I used gcc 4.9.2 to build it.

 

Using redpill-load I created the following user_config.json:

The image is successfully created, but the first partition doesn't have the bootabled flag:

So I used fdisk on the image to set the first partition "active", so it can actually boot on legacy systems.

The developers should fix this I guess.

 

After writing it to USB it does seem to try and boot, but it just shows: Booting the kernel.

It hangs for like 20 or 30 seconds, then it reboots. (see screenshot).

 

Any ideas?

I'm afraid that DS3615xs and DS3617xs won't be able to use the "face recognition" feature, according to this Synology article:

@MastaG I've successfully installed 6.2.4 baremetal on a Gen8 and can confirm that console output stops at what you're seeing with "Booting the kernel.". It should eventually bring up a network interface and DHCP, though, not reboot. I've not tried 7.x yet, so can't comment on that. This is my console that's been booted into DSM for 6hrs+

It makes no noticeable difference to performance, as it scales back up on demand, but as to reducing power consumption I honestly can't say. The PDU the server is connected to isn't sensitive enough to even notice the Gen8 is powered on or off. The only thing it ever really notices is when the PS4 Pro is on and working hard. I could stick a meter on it and measure it properly, but I'm really not that bothered, I just like to think that I'm doing at least something to minimise the impact of having a Xeon sat there doing very little for 90% of the time. I would imagine spinning down the 4 HDDs would have more impact, but the server's constantly logging monitoring data for a few bits and pieces and the HDDs wouldn't stay off for more than a few minutes, and spinning them up and down that much could shorten their life span.

So I got a little further.

 

I've now build the redpill.ko kernel module using the toolchain stated here: https://github.com/RedPill-TTG/redpill-lkm/pull/16/commits/b3f263c65198d94014f60f52f58bc6be00d1d8f8#

 

So basically:

make LINUX_SRC=~/.toolchain/bromolow-DSM-7.0-toolkit/build CROSS_COMPILE=~/.toolchain/bromolow-DSM-7.0-toolchain/x86_64-pc-linux-gnu/bin/x86_64-pc-linux-gnu-

and also:

strip -S redpill.ko

 

Now using the redpill.ko built by the DSM 7.0 toolchain (and stripped) my Microserver Gen8 doesn't reboot any longer.

It now just sits there at the "Booting the kernel." screen.

 

However I can't see any DHCP being requested and I still don't have any console output.

Any ideas?

Can you access into ILO to view serial output of gen8?

What version of DSM and bootloader where you previously running, and do you have a  PCIe NIC in your Gen8? Synology dropped the driver that was compatible with the onboard NIC a few versions ago (6.2.2, iirc) and users needed to either move to ESXi and vmxnet, or else fit a compatible PCIe NIC and disable the onboard NIC.

 

No longer the case, apparently. Driver support for the onboard NIC came back with 6.2.3

I believe this changed. 6.2.3 supports onboard nic. I use the two standard nics on my gen 8 with no modifications.

Oh, that's cool, didn't realise that! That opens up the possibility of getting a better/additional HBA to go in there at some point...

I've tried setting different consoles by editing the grub cmd line, like ttyS0, ttyS1, tty0 and tty1 but it refuses to show anything after "Booting the kernel."

There builtin NICs in the Gen8 yes, two of them.

I think it's: Broadcom Corporation NetXtreme BCM5720 Gigabit Ethernet PCIe

 

I was also using that model with 6.2.3 on jun's 1.03b loader.

I'm running bare metal btw.

You can get at the serial console by following this guide (which I didn't know was possible with the iLO until I Googled it just now, so that's good to know!):

3.mount boot partion. Just like this: mount /dev/vda1 /mnt  #my device is /dev/vda1

4.vim /mnt/boot/grub/grub.cfg , search "sn",change the serial number

 

my dsm 7.0.1 runs on qnap 453b-mini

I'm using the docker method and scripts provided by haydibe, rather than doing it myself (macOS isn't the easiest environment for compiling non-Mac stuff in), and 6.2.4 compiles and runs just fine on my baremetal Gen8 (although I'm not using the onboard NIC, but this shouldn't be an issue from what scoobdriver said).

And can you also point me to the dockerfiles so I can see if he puts anything special in the user_config?

Thank you for the docker files and your own image.

Unfortunately even when trying your image, the internal network interfaces still don't come up (at least no DHCP request is being made).

 

So I guess the MicroServer Gen8 internal network interfaces aren't supported anymore in 6.2.4 and 7.x.
