bowlerman Posted May 13, 2021 Share #1 Posted May 13, 2021 Trying to get my 10gb HP NC523 sfp card to work on my Micro server Gen 8 running 3615 1.03 when I add the card none of the Nics pickup a DHCP. According to all the information it should work ootb but doesn't. I have swapped out the HDD and USB with a fresh build and it sees the Nics but as soon as I install the OS it reboots but I can't connect to it. Can I get my current or fresh build to work with the 10GB card. Any tips / advice / help would be appreciated thanks.
flyride Posted May 13, 2021 Share #2 Posted May 13, 2021 Well the obvious troubleshooting option would be to configure a static IP for the Gbe card, and see if you can still connect to it after you install the 10Gbe. How many NICs are in the server now?
bowlerman Posted May 14, 2021 Author Share #3 Posted May 14, 2021 Its a HP Micro server Gen 8 so 2 x 1gb 1 x iLo 1gb built in, then the newly added 10GB NC523sfp DHCP assigns the IP on boot to the 10gb and the 1gb - they are both seen at the first stage of the build but then no connection after the OS / *.pat is installed. If remove the card and reinstall it will build fine. I have two of these cards and both work fine in Windows 10 & Server.

FWIW, the card is a QLogic 8214 rebranded as HP. I am not aware of any Synology OEM QLogic cards but there is a native driver qlcnic which should support that chip. The PCI ID of the supported card is VID 1077 DEVID 8020 - and according to this the HP card keeps the ID's intact, so the native driver should work. DHCP assignment pre-boot is not explicitly for the OS; it's for PXE boot, which DSM doesn't use. Post boot, the OS will re-request the address(es) from DHCP or use a static IP as needed. You should not connect the iLo NIC to your regular network (and the driver is unlikely to be supported by DSM in any case). I still would disable one of the 1 Gbe NICs in the BIOS and assign a static IP in DSM to remove the number of moving parts prior to introducing the 10Gbe card. If that still doesn't work, maybe @IG-88 has compiled a newer qlcnic in his extra.lzma. Edited May 14, 2021 by flyride

I have already emailed @IG-88 who confirmed that this should work OOTB and as stated it does but only on the first boot. I know others on here have got these working and was hoping someone who has could give me some pointers on how.
flyride Posted May 14, 2021 Share #6 Posted May 14, 2021 Not sure how to more more explicit, but here is the sequence that I would try: 1. Disable extra 1 Gbe port 2. Install DSM 3. Assign static IP to Gbe port in DSM 4. Reboot and evaluate to make sure all is working 5. Install HP 10Gbe card and evaluate

bowlerman Posted May 17, 2021 Author Share #11 Posted May 17, 2021 (edited) The time between 12:08 and 12:30 is when the card was inserted and I have no logs in the OS as it did not boot. 12:08 is the end of the last successful boot and 12:30 is the start of the start of the next successful boot. As regards the Debug mode the only options I have are E or C E edit commands before booting C for command line Sorry never used the virtual serial port on the iLo let me check this and come back to you. bowlerman Posted May 17, 2021 Author Share #12 Posted May 17, 2021 Manged to get into the virtual serial port on the iLo, not sure how to get the boot info. I tried the windbg command and just get; status=2 status_tag=COMMAND PROCESSING FAILED error_tag=COMMAND NOT RECOGNIZED Mon May 17 10:30:02 2021 Ran disable and enable still no joy, also VSP with no output to the putty session. Do I need to go e or c and run any command to pipe this to the putty session?
