BillyCallahan Posted August 11, 2015 Share #1 Posted August 11, 2015 Hello, I already asked this in the french section but for lack of answers I actually prefer ask here My goal is to access my movies/musics with my tv/computer from my NAS in HD, probably by installing Plex on it. I want to use transmission/uTorrent on my Nas, of course I want to access all my data through the internet if I'm on vacation (or whatever) with a good transfer rate. The use of RAID 5 would be a big plus one here ! One day I'll probably run a web site with my nas. Here's is what I already got: http://www.ldlc.com/fiche/PB00085752.htm -> Motherboard http://www.ldlc.com/fiche/PB00067066.html -> processor http://www.ldlc.com/fiche/PB00047361.html-> RAM http://www.ldlc.com/fiche/PB00058760.html-> Case with a 500W power supply I know it's in french but you can find the relevant information in bold I also thought about buying this model: HP Proliant Gen8 G1610t What do you think ? Should I buy anything else ?
ldr78 Posted August 12, 2015 Share #2 Posted August 12, 2015 Hello, In my opinion the processor and the power supply are oversized. I'm running plex with on my j1900 proc and it's running well. With my Q1900Mother board, 4 x1TB Sata HD and 1 USB3 disk, power consumption doesn't exceed 50W The RAM may be increased to 4GB at least. To increase your disks transfer rates, you shouldn't use Raid-5 but Raid-1. the drawback is you will lose half of your capacity. The real bottleneck may be internet speed. If you are connected via Adsl the uplink may not be enough to stream HD.
BillyCallahan Posted August 12, 2015 Author Share #3 Posted August 12, 2015 Thank you About the processor, it is the only proc I have at the moment and I won't buy an other one if this one is sufficiant However I may change the power supply as it is a big one... About the RAM, 2GB DDR2 is so expensive ahah, but I will upgrade it. Yeah RAID 1 is awesome, but really once again too expensive for me as I'd like to have at least 6-8TB...:/ Hopefully in few weeks I'll have the fiber which is GREAT May be should I just buy the HP Proliant Gen8 G1610t, which is smaller and only costs 235€ But I'm worried about the fact that it doesn't support RAID
Gait Posted August 12, 2015 Share #4 Posted August 12, 2015 I haven't seen my max RAM use over 1gb so I should try first how 2GB works, updating to 4GB is always an option for later.
MarsManden Posted August 14, 2015 Share #5 Posted August 14, 2015 Don't worry about RAID5-support - XPEnology does the RAID for you. I have the older N54L HP server, and it sure is fast enough for file-transfer using RAID5 by XPEnology - but it lacks CPU power for Plex video re-encoding of high bitrate videos.
