XPEN on flash drives: good or bad?

Hello,

Current OMV user looking to try out XPEnology. I've tried to search for this topic using several different key words but the search result keeps coming back with 'too many common words used' in my search result.

I realize I need a usb drive to boot to my server (using a HP microserver btw natively; no ESXi). I'm wondering if I can install the OS to a flash drive and not a mechanical hard drive. The reason I ask is to free up a bay in my NAS. I'm aware of the BIOS mod for these microservers as I've already installed it. I'd like to use all of the bays for storage and not for an OS drive.

If I can, what are the requirements/recommendation for size?

Since I was starting from scratch, I went ahead and tried with a flash drive and a usb portable hard drive. Neither worked. Kept getting errors while trying to install using the Synology Assistant. I went back to my 3.5'' HD.

I would still be interested if someone was able to get a portable (2.5'' usb powered) or a flash drive to work and HOW.

It doesn't work this way. USB is just a small bootloader, not the entire OS (DSM).

OS (DSM) is installed on to small partition of ALL the internal drives for redundancy. Those disks shown as initialized and ready for creation of data volumes with different level of RAID on the rest of the drives space. Those volumes will host your data.

USB drive is recognized as external after complete DSM installation and can be used for backup or additional storage, but doesn't have a system partition.
